How do you put Doom into deathmatch mode?

I've recently started making deathmatch maps for Doom but I can't work out how to put Doom into deathmatch mode so I can play it with my friends. If anyone knows how to do it then that would be greatly appreciated

You can add the -deathmatch parameter to denote that you are playing in DM mode.
