El Inferno Posted August 9, 2020 (edited) Hey, this is my fifth released map. This one is techbase-themed and employs Ukiro's OTEX pack. You can download the map here: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/g-i/hyperload (old link https://www.dropbox.com/s/2bu9639wgcvvuh5/hyperload.zip?dl=0) I followed Ribbiks style of mapping in this project (though I'm not nearly as good )) and so... I recommend to begin playing the map on HMP. The map is 20-25 minutes long if you know what to do. Have fun! Any feedback is welcome. Both on visuals and combat. Other stuff: -You need to load the map with OTEX 1.1 (https://doom.ukiro.com/otex-downloads/). I will include textures in the wad once the map reaches the final state. (Done) -Format: Boom, tested with complevel 9, base - DOOM2.wad -Monsters: 350-400 -Music: http://www.angelfire.com/punk4/knightriderofdoom/, Hyperloader (hence the name) -HNTR has a significantly different enemy placement (please tell me if someone actually tries it; for now I don't think that this is the case) -Building time - 1 month + forever to bugfix Spoiler Update log: Spoiler v13 (Thanks Zolgia108): - More AVs in YK area! (UV only, to prevent an easy strat) - In BK fixed: a visual glitch, a glitch with falling into the HK trap (if infinite height is disabled), some monster block linedef tweaks - In RK: on UV added pinkies into the blood to prevent a chease - Made some switches more visible. v14: - small fix on HNTR - a bug in BK area fixed - little ammo tweaks v15: -removed 1 archvile on HMP -bactracking switch added v16: -cosmetic tweaks RC: more cosmetic and balancing tweaks, coop starts added Edited December 24, 2020 by El Inferno idgames update 23 Quote Share this post Link to post

This area was the main reason for me to bother with lower difficulties 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zolgia108 Posted August 9, 2020 (edited) well of course i played on uv Snce video will take some time i will start to say something: 1) in the red key i used the strategy "kill them from below, lava is better than rockets on the face" but i died like 200 times anyway 2) glitch in the hk swarm room (the one with crushers) if i go up and a platform lowers in the nukage i can fall into the hk trap 3) some switches in general are too similar to wall textures, i missed them a lot of times and that blocked my progression (hk area is one example) 4) caco swarm without plasma is freaking impossible, but it was cool that i could return there later with a plasma gun, it wasn't cool the fact that i didn't know what it was for 5) when i took the last key i couldn't see where to use it, you brought me to SM area, but the lift was too thin so i couldnt see it and had to noclip to understand the progression, then i finally saw it. 6) fights were are really cool (especially the archie one, of course) and all very ribbik, and he is my favourite mapper so i was sure that i would have enjoyed them 7) techbase is awful, i hate it, but not because of you ahahahah, i actually quite enjoyed it here, texturing was good 8) you are becoming a very good mapper :) Edited August 9, 2020 by Zolgia108 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Chip Posted August 9, 2020 are you going to put your released maps into a single episode? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

El Inferno Posted August 10, 2020 8 hours ago, Zolgia108 said: its elaborating, should be up soon :) Hey, I just watched the video! Thanks as usual, that was fun to watch! There's definetely some stuff to fix. It's incredible that you did all 3 key fight in a not intended way)) - YK area apparently needs more archies! - In BK I need to fix monster block linedefs and visual glitches. I play with infinite height and so I forgot that you can fall into the HK pit, will fix that. - In RK I don't really like that you can kill revs from below. If only I had a 40 damage floor... I have some ideas how to fix that. - I will make switches more visible, of course. I'm surprised that you found the archie maze secret! And as you noted you can crush a lot of things by shooting a secret switch. A switch at the start crushes the manc in front of you. SM also can be crushed btw. (And cyber as well, but don't tell anyone, it's a secret) I'll leave the progression as it is, it's not that bad. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

El Inferno Posted August 15, 2020 Here's my playthrough of the map. I used a mid safe here, because I suc at doom( Anyway, super-secret spoiler alert! Don't watch the video if you want to find it by yourself) 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zolgia108 Posted August 15, 2020 you should be playing my maps instead of yours!!! anyway, if you suck at doom then most of the people here (myself included) should quit and start playing something like, i don't know, monkey island maybe :P 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

You wrote that those are not really new maps and were taken from djinn. I can play them anyway, of course 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I d really love to see you playing map 32 honestly, cause... well you 'll see why ahahahah I don't know if it's bad to reuse something that was never published, i just didn't want to throw away those ideas basically :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Pixel Fiend Posted December 19, 2020 Why haven't you put it on idgames and with textures included? It's a terrific wad. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Summer ended and I got occupied with other things( And I'm actually still making a map 2 for this wad (wip): but there's still a lot to do with this one so maybe it's reasonable to upload map 1 as a standalone project 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
El Inferno Posted December 20, 2020 Okay, I decided to upload this map to idgames right now. This is a RC version of the map: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2bu9639wgcvvuh5/hyperload.zip?dl=0 Hope that now there's no issues with it from the technical side at least (I struggled a lot with texture clean up today). I'll be happy to hear some feedback on gameplay (also on lower difficulties). The next map will be released separately and will probably appear in a month or two. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Daerik Posted December 28, 2020 Rough around the edges in places, with some of the fights being a bit obtuse (found a lot of crushers after I killed the monsters they were meant to crush). There are some really creative fights though, and I'm looking forward to seeing your next map. Maybe for the SMM fight, add some glowing lines from the switches to the crusher to sign-post better what you're supposed to do. Could use a similar concept in other places to remove some of the obtuseness. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Csucskos Posted February 25, 2021 (edited) OK, I finished the map on UV yesterday, but wanted to let my head clear up before the review as I was furious. So overall the map looks nice and is not that hard, but it's very very punishing. And I almost lost my sanity because of this. I had to savescum to finish it. So I wasn't even ashamed that I cheesed any fight I could. And two things: Ledges, you can get anywhere on the, (I don't know if it's intentional or not) and buttons, I don't even know what half of them does. I pushed them all though. Let's see in order: I just skip the first room, the imps won't even wake up, second room is OK, but I hate the toxic pool, if you fall you have to wait a cycle to get out and even though it's only low damaging floor you'll lose 30-40 hp to it. But it's still OK, will talk about the real problem part later. The mancubus is absolutely useless I feel, you can crush him, and I don't think I ever got hit by him, as I was hiding in the gunner side. The 'around' room. Nothing spectacular, the fight is pretty easy. (I don't know if it's intentional, but you can jump into the mastermind room and even though you don't have the plasma, can just grab some amoo, making the later fights easier.) Hellknight trap: Nice! It was challenging, but doable maybe a little too short, but I enjoyed it. YellowKey: Oh boy! I killed the mancubi from the windows so that was not a problem, but the archviles... I figured out the pattern after a few deaths, but it's really punishing. The walls are too low, so if they lower even just a tiny amount, you instantly get zapped. And after one mistake because you get airborn, you'll get zapped to death. I tried that room for about an hour before I said, OK, I'll save after each succesfull back and forth. It was miserable. The imps did nothing. (Yeah, so I really like the idea of the archvile fight, but boy it's frustrating to restart just because of a tiny mistake.) The arachnotrons and the revenants in the big around room are too easy, I killed them hiding behind a corner. I saw the crusher, but it'd have been much riskier to shoot it than just shooting rockets into the revenants. Pre RedKey: I just poke in and then back out, letting them fight and when they are groupped to the door I finish them off with a few rockets. Caco trap: Really nasty but OK! Pre BlueKey: Just push the button, kill the mancubus and get the hack out of there! After that it's pretty easy. The crusher is useful. BlueKey: Holy sh*t! I pushed every button but don't know what they do. Maybe open up the rocket stash? After that I grap the weapons and push the spwan button. If stand in the rocket stash room's corner and shoot rockets, they die quity quickly. But if not... I don't know how could one do it. Just the plasma is not enough, I got overwhelmed extremely quickly. Archvile maze: Like what? It's really random and easy, while giving you a ton of goodies. RedKey: I aged a few years in there. How can one avoid the missles? There are those crushers, but you can't move under it, so half of the time it just blocks your movement but not the rockets. But my biggest problem is not this but the lava. If you get in there you are dead. It's max damaging, so even the radiation suit is leaky and the pinkies will corner you real fast. And the buttons! The buttons oh... They are so small, I was barely able to push them. And when you are under heavy fire it's almost impossible. (4 pinkies did not teleport in, had to noclip to get them :( ~ only tested once so maybe not a big issue) Mastermind: It's sooooo easy, you poke in and kill everyone from the door, after that you can focus on her. Edited February 25, 2021 by Csucskos 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Csucskos Posted February 25, 2021 And final room: Just cheese it! Push the button and drop down. Killing the archviles from the mastermind room is really easy. After you kill both just push the cyberdemon button and get out of there. I could not bother to kill them in that small room. I missed 2 secrets, but even with the automap I don't know where they are. Took me 35 minutes to finish the map, but in real time it was more like 2 hours. And not because the map is too hard, but one little mistake will spell your demise and it's not fun. I'm also not a big fan of unavoidable damage like in the RedKey room. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Csucskos Posted February 25, 2021 OK, just watched your playthrough... well... Playing it backwards the switches make sense and the weapons too... Btw I'm not a big fan of crushers, if you know where to find them you can almost just skip the map. I see where the secrets were... I tried the tube, but did not manage to get in there and then just gave up. Apparently it WAS the secret I just suck at jumping. Oh you should have the plasma for that fight... I rocketed the chaingunners and then shotgun everyone. Left with 6% health but wasn't that bad, could heal up in the next room. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
El Inferno Posted February 25, 2021 1 hour ago, Csucskos said: OK, I finished the map on UV yesterday, but wanted to let my head clear up before the review as I was furious. Thanks for checking this map out! That's alright that most of the intermediate stuff was pretty easy for you. Not everything should be difficult after all. YK and RK fights are indeed very punishing, but everything else is not that bad. I had about 50% success rate in these fights when I playtested the map. It's nice that you already checked my video so I don't need to explain strategies in text) But yeah, you probably saw the intended way to do the blue key and red key sections. The point of crushers was to make all these easy fights faster in cost of higher risk. The caco trap is perfectly doable without plasma, the map can be beaten in pretty much any order you want and so I already got plasma at that point. Anyways, I hope that you had at least some fun with this thing! (but frustration is almost inevitable in harder maps) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Csucskos Posted February 25, 2021 The map is overall nice and really liked the archvile fight, (it's clever) but as I said, punishing is not fun. And I knew what to do in the RedKey area, I just wasn't able to avoid the missles. And in the BlueKey as I said, I first pushed all the buttons and then wondered what they do, I see now how it should have been done, but maybe make it impossible to push them before initiating the fight there. 50% success rate?! You rock man! (I'll check your other maps now :D) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
