[WIP] Sonic World Doom - Beta 1

Hello,

 

BETA 1 CURRENTLY

 

I'm on moddb for a while now, and I got suggested to post my mod here, so... here we go ! Please note this is my first wad... Maybe a bit too ambitious, but I want to complete it. I really need feedbacks on this, because, as you will see in Chemical Plant Zone, it's... basic. I also noticed that I could do much better on a lot of things after seeing other mods (for example, add girders below a bridge...). I want it to become a good wad, and not just a random average wad. Maybe not top 10 thought, but you know what I mean :P.

10/03/2021 UPDATE :

New video, with a new boss fight, again.

 

It will be a bonus boss fight in the second beta, and also in the final release. Only accessible if you collect enough Red Star Rings. So, if you don't mind spoilers about who it is, please watch (it's not a big deal anyway :P).

Reala is also a boss in the mod. He will be included in the second beta, but only if you have enough Red Star Rings collected.

Please note, the map is a leftover that I had from Star Light Zone, it is not the map that will be used.

 

But Reala will not be the only boss or area accessible with Red Star Rings...

 

09/22/2021 UPDATE :

New video about Green Hill Zone Act 3.

 

This map changed a bit since the last time when it was included in the multiplayer version of the wad. Better design at the end, new monsters, a cutscene and a boss, which is a tribute (kinda) to the first boss of the series on the Sega Megadrive / Genesis. It's also the first boss encountered in the wad, so he's easy to beat, or at least it should be.

Also, why this level is straightforward ? All the 3 acts of Green Hill are like that, for the player to get used to a few mechanics. As seen in the beta 1, levels afterward this zone are not straightforward. And no, I'm not revealing the secrets on the map, or at least none that has a Red Star Ring :P.

First, here's what you need to play this :
- GZDoom

- Doom 2

- Mouselook, crouch and jump required

- Don't do pistol start
- Difficulties have not been set currently, so play it in any difficulty

- Around one hour of play right now

- Currently singleplayer, will have a separated multiplayer version later

- Don't use any mods with it, since I changed player speed, air control and added weapons

- You can see your health at the bottom right of the screen, but if you can't see it, change your screensize, it's a issue currently not fixed

 

So, what is Sonic World Doom ?

Well, you play the Doomguy in the Sonic World, it's simple. However, you can only heal yourself with rings, which still can be picked up even when you're at full HP (intended). It's the Sonic World, so a few mechanics are also in there :
- Springs
- Item boxes

- Water levels (do you like bubbles ?)

 

Also, like an other famous mod, you can choose your levels in a hub level. However, right now this one is not really done, but still present.

 

I want to keep the original design / sprites of the zones as much as possible, without any modification on the tileset of the game they originated. I'm also trying to bring mechanics from the level itself.

 

I'm not interested in a scoring / time system.

 

How much levels do I want to create ? I don't know.

 

Red Star Rings

In each level, you can find 5 hidden Red Star Rings, which will have an use later on.

 

Chaos Emeralds

You can get a Chaos Emerald by completing a Special Stage, which first need to be found. If you do so, you'll get an interesting reward.

 

I already played this on Zandronum ?

Yeah, it's a very, very old version of the wad, when I was doing it for fun. As I want to be way more serious now and create a fun and interesting wad, I'm completely reworking it, and is for now only singleplayer. A multiplayer version will come only after the wad is completed.

 

Will this have more custom monsters outside of Doom and Duke Nukem ?

Yes, but it's a lot of work, it will come later. Duke Nukem monsters were not created by me.

 

Why I'm creating this mod ?

Sonic is one of my favorite game series. I know that some Sonic wads already exist, but I wanted to also create mine. And here we are.

What is included in the BETA 1 ?

- 5 complete levels, 2 "short bosses", 1 special stage, a hub level (one level from Sonic 1, three from Sonic 2, one from Sonic 3, one from SRB2 (they know), two from Sonic Adventure) (MAP01, MAP21, MAP22, MAP23, HUBLV, SRB03, ADV02, ADV05, SPE03)

- The Special Stage is located in Chemical Plant Zone

- The Special Stage reward sprite is in his very early stage... You will see what I mean when you get it :P
- Red Star Rings have no uses in this beta (20 to find)
- If you can, play and record this in a blind play. It helps me to see how players play the map without knowing it, to see some problems

- I'm aware of some problems (like textures in the doors that I completely forgot)

- Don't forget it's my first wad

- I don't know if I will do more Sonic Adventure levels, 2 is already enough, I prefer to focus on really new levels and not on existing 3D levels

- Levels are full of ammo for the BETA since levels are played in any order right now, to avoid any problems

- Monsters placements are still a bit random, you'll notice it

- Since Sonic 2 levels and after are set way after Green Hill Zone, they are way harder, so be careful

- No intro in this beta, wil have one later to explain the story

- The credit file is not complete right now, a mistake of mine

- You can see your health at the bottom right of the screen, but if you can't see it, change your screensize, it's a issue currently not fixed

 

Please note about the BETA 1 : I'm aware of most of the issues (like the unpegged textures on the doors) since it had some playtest by some streamers.

Also I'm going more in depth about some features like the Red Star Rings and their utility, the hub level (don't judge the picture, it's very, very early), some informations on the Chaos Emeralds, and some levels planned and their gimmicks.

New video, even though there's still some work to do on a few things.

E-102 Gamma Boss Fight :

 

 

Can also confirm bosses at the end of each zone, almost everytime a unique boss, or either a Doom classic like the Cyberdemon or the Annihilator (I said classic ?).

 

For example, in Green Hill Zone Act 3, you will fight... A brown ball.

 

Levels will also have some new custom monsters directly from the Sonic World. But since the world is invaded by the demons, you won't see them very often until Sonic CD levels.
