ellmo Posted August 22, 2020 You're looking at a pirated copy, probably zipped or arj-ed to 4 disks. Did I get the question right? 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted August 22, 2020 There was no 1.1, was there? Either way 4 is the right number of disks, would you considering getting a USB floppy drive and seeing what’s on there? Probably just regular old Doom, but drives are cheap these days, so if you’re interested that option is there. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
chungy Posted August 22, 2020 There are registered 1.1 disks. These aren't the originals sent by id so they don't have any real market value to speak of. But yeah that's probably what you have. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
seed Posted August 22, 2020 (edited) Yeah, like everyone else has said already, there were 1.1 disks, which was the first full version of registered Doom, but these are absolutely fake. Just some random guy who maybe put Doom on them and called it a day. The originals would look like this from what I can find: So, whatever you got your hands on is worthless. Back in the day we did this when our 500 MB hard drives filled up and we had to move stuff off just to get Windows to boot up again :> 9 Quote Share this post Link to post

I confess, this is how I first encountered Doom. My uncle installed a full pirated copy on our PC in 1994 and I was hooked. I did buy The Ultimate Doom, Doom II and Final Doom a couple years later which I ended up copying to ISO and made a few backups so I always have an installable, legit copy of all the original IWADs ;) 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Kloki38 Posted August 22, 2020 As was previously said, this is just a worthless copy/backup of the original floppies. The original floppy version has 4 disks, Ultimate has 5. The original releases of Doom don´t have any form of copy protection, so at the time it was very easy to copy it (and then give the backup to somebody). In the 90´s not a lot of people cared about whether the game they are playing is a pirated copy or not - it was a different era. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Doomkid Posted August 23, 2020 If you're too poor or too young to get a fun game legitimately, you should copy all those damn floppies til the cows come home. Some call it piracy, I call it a very extended "try before you buy" approach!! (The only version of Doom 2 I owned until about 2005 was a bootleg for chrissake, that's about 8 years straight of being a no-good, dirty, rotten pirate) 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

There isn't a single gamer from the 80's, 90's or even 2000's that didn't have at least 1 game they got "illegally" from a friend or family member. I remember even before 1994 my family had a Commordore 128 with a TAPE PLAYER!!! Yes, GAMES ON FUCKING CASSETTE TAPES!! And a 5 1⁄4-inch floppy drive. And not a single game was legit. It was the same with VHS tapes and music. Early 80's metal bands got their name and reputation around through tape-trading and people doing 4th, 5th, 6th generation tape copies and trading for other bands etc. It's a double-edge sword for developers and creators. The die-hards will always cough up for a legit copy at some point for ownership of something they love and that's cool. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

HeGsheoshed Posted February 12, 2023 Thank you for the warning that I am resurrecting an old thread. If this is a functioning backup of Doom ver 1.1 then you have a copy of the multi monitor version. Time for me to get all the disks together and see what my brother and I have between us. Lucky find. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
