I just beat Knee Deep without dying!

Recommended Posts

I'd like to beat either of the canon games iron man, no deaths, all pistol, on UV or HMP. Sounds like it'd be challenging.

Hey that's cool, man. Before cropping up here back in May, I hadn't played Doom in about 15 years myself. Now I play it religiously! I too now can complete almost all of Doom 1 without dying, with the exception of E4 because hey, E4M1 and E4M2 are still pretty damn punishing hehe. My personal challenge right now is gradually getting better and better so I can graduate from Hurt Me Plenty to Ultra-Violence being my standard difficulty like most people here. My method so far has been playing mostly single map WADs on UV so I don't burn out on it in say a megaWAD, which I still play those at HMP at this stage. I've been improving a lot lately, so I think I'm going to play whichever megaWAD wins the vote for next month's Doomworld MegaWAD Club playthrough on UV and take the plunge.

When revisiting Doom 1's classic campaigns, I've hit most of the goals I set for myself. I've completed saveless runs on Ultra-Violence for each individual level, and I've completed deathless "entire-episode" runs for all four episodes... on Hurt Me Plenty.

I have not managed an Episode 4 UV run yet. I always arrive at Perfect Hatred with about 7HP remaining and immediately perish. I can't say I'm too bugged by it (I consider the bonus campaign to only be fun on HMP), but it remains my one bit of unfinished business; the one loose end I have not tied up.

I've been meaning to try to beat Knee Deep in the Dead on Ultraviolence, keyboard look, and 0% secrets, lol. I've played it so many times that avoiding secrets is like a psychological qualm, haha... but I think the secrets are a tad too generous too early for my tastes.

Okay man nice. You've completed pistol start e4 uv?

Man I hope you one day get to tie up that loose end

Hehe yeah man, that blue armor on e1m1 sure makes the next few levels less dangerous.

One thing missing from my Doom related gaming is beating D'sparil from Heretic on skill 5. I've completed the rest of Heretic on skill 5 except that fight.

Plutonia pistol only. Is it even possible though?

Not with 100 percent kills. There's not enough ammo. Or is it?

It's possible, though you'd be wasting a chunk of your life, especially since there are so many instances of running smack into a chaingunner orgy like at the end of Map07, where you fall into a pit and have two staring you down. Maps with tight corridors like Map11 would be hell, and Map30 would need to be a TAS to collect a mob of archies to help kill the IOS.

Playing through episode 1 is one of the few "must have done"s in life - great that you could catch up with that.

I was in a similar position like you back in 1998 after I had cheated my way through Doom in later 1995 I kinda felt a huge dissatisfaction where once pure fascination used to reside in respect to Doom/II. The cheating, and lack of "mousing", had totally destroyed the game's enigmatic charme.

One day, after sniffing through a Doom level/editor CD, I loaded up the original and warped to map e3m6 which previously had caught my eye due to its awesome colors and open architecture. I pistol started, so to speak, and grinded my way through the map - this time trying to make full use of the mouse("novert" be blessed) and the game's secrets / "hidden passages"... leaving no corner untouched.

After I hit space to exit the map I was literally blown away how good the game truly was. I restarted and went to tackle episode 1 always remembering what a buddy of mine used to say when he played PSX Doom - "the secrets... they're literally the icing on the cake!".

Going through episode 1 and later through Map10 trying to find all secrets made me truly appreciate id's genius at their peak.

I also installed the Doom shareware on all PCs at school and can vividly remember strolling through E1M9 while the teacher blabbered on about how nobody was allowed to install stuff on the fleet of 486 DX33s...  good times!

Welcome back to Doom. If you dig the music, as a next step I'd start looking into some soundfonts or different ways of hearing the midi music in-game. There are some music packs recorded from a Roland SC-55 at http://sc55.duke4.net/

If you're running chocolate Doom those will work. You can also tell the game to use timidity and download a patch set like https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/sounds/eawpats for a different sound.

My goals are to just keep having fun, I don't care about beating everything UV anymore. I will play at the highest difficulty that is still fun for me. Usually falls around HMP these days.

I think I spend more time searching for wads and tweaking the music and stuff than I do playing. And I'm OK with that :)

There are also many kditd style wads for you to play now.

EDIT: i just reread your post and you may have been playing for a while, so sorry if this info is all old to you :p.

MIDI music is my life so I got very excited when you mentioned the SC-55 :D

I own a Roland SC-88 which sounds fantastic for playing DOOM on my custom DOS PC.  I switch between the SC-55 and SC-88 maps depending on the track.  Both work great for most songs, but my personal preference is the SC-55 for the original DOOM and the SC-88 for DOOM II and TNT.

Exactly, it's about having fun and challenging one self. The competition in games has ended for me, I've got a wife sick in covid and I have two kids so just having the time and strength to even start a game is a win for me. I have hundreds of games but right now doom is the most accessible for me so that's where the fun is.

I've always loved the Doom music. I have a few electric and acoustic guitars and basses and just two days ago my fingers fooled around on the fret board while my daughter plucked the strings. We accidently found the notes for The imp song.

Edit: sorry it wasn't the Imp song it was I sawed the demon

Crap, I hope your wife recovers and you all stay healthy.

That's awesome about the guitar. I too always loved the Doom music (after graduating from a PC that didn't play music or sound).

Doom is perfect to pick up and play for a few minutes here and there.

What a coincidence! Just 2-3 days ago I played through all 4 episodes of Ultimate Doom on UV with no deaths. I feel like I've done it multiple times before, but - just in case - I wanted to have at least ONE instance of it on video. I'm actually uploading it as I type this! It's sweet that you've got that hurdle out of the way, my next challenge is to UV-fast them all from pistol start (starts sweating)

I also did that for my YouTube channel a couple of months back! Instead of just doing each individual level I thought that playing through the entire episode would be more logical, as I would have so many videos to work on otherwise. My UV-fast pistol start journey ended on E2M5, unfortunately.

I remember doing that back in the 90's with Ultimate Doom, Doom II and Final Doom. Of course I was only 15 at the time, so it took quite a few attempts.

I managed TNT but I ran into a brick wall with Plutonia, eventually I got tired of restarting the whole thing everytime I died. That put an end to my aspirations. I don't think I ever attempted it again, even though I have went through Plutonia many times on UV since then.

I wasn't that invested in it and really only wanted to do it with Doom and Doom II. TNT and Plutonia were just a bonus thing.

Yes, this has inspired me. No, it's not enough to make me attempt it again....fine, I'll put it on the list, but that's as far as I'm willing to go.

Also, I'd like to congratulate you.

It may not seem like much to some, but doing that after spending 2 decades away from Doom would be like playing it for the first time on UV, with zero deaths. Especially when you consider the lack of knowledge on map layouts and enemy placement etc.

Quite impressive when you think of it like that.

Without even stepping out of Ultimate Doom that's going to be a challenge. E4M1 and E4M2 are going to be especially tricky. It's time to put all those years honing your Doom skills to the test.

Goodluck! You will need it.

Oh you were 15, so you should take my forum nickname :D

Well what happened was that I played Doom 1 shareware at a friends place, and then Doom2 at another friends house back in what 95-96. (I'm born 29 Aug 1986) So I was literally just a kid. Hell, we drew about Doom at school and played that we were the Doomguy, and imitaded his death animation when jumping in the swimming house pool. We even went around yelling "AGUMAARAOOW". We had a fucking blast!

When me and my brother finally got a computer, which were expensive as fuck back then, it was already time to play Quakeworld instead. So Doom didn't attract me anymore until recently. Or well, it has always attracted me, I've been casually playing it on Xbox (original) and Playstation 3 but those experiences were'nt that good.

So I finally told my wife early this year "I'm gonna fuckinf buy Doom for the PC" and she was like "You already have the BFG edition on PS3" and I was like "It sucks, I want the real deal, i deserve it and I've been looking at hundreds of videos of it on uTube, I've discussed the game with John Romero via email and I wanna play games without hoardin the TV for you".

So I got it and the first thing I did was trying out Plutonia and TNT and alot of other pwads. I got alot of help from this great community in setting up gzdoom etc. I wish to thank everyone here, by the way, you guys are awesome!

So playing Plutonia and BTSX etc etc honed my skills pretty good so I figured "Damn I really have to do Knee Deep". My plan wasn't to achieve anything other than having a relaxing session after all the stresses of being a dad with two crazy kids and the wife is recovering from Covid19. But whatever happens happens, and what happened is that I completed E1 with 0 deaths which gave me a feeling of pride and achivement.

I even got to E2M4 before I turned it off and went to bed.

Funny thing is, that we all here have stories to share and I enjoy reading them. I enjoy when people play and discuss Doom. There's some sort of depth to it, compared to discussing Fortnite or Cod or whatever. Doom goes way deeper than those games - and I say this without claiming that those are bad games.

20 years from now, what game will people discuss in the same way that we are discussing Doom right now? Will people have fond memories and feelings of attachtments to Fortnite? No, I do not think so. Fortnite doesen't bring out the best in gamers, rather the worst. They get angry at each other etc. If someone is better than you in those games, you hate them, whereas in Doom, I enjoy reading about, watching videos of and learning from others.

If 29 is old, then I'm positively ancient by comparison.

I'd need a title with more crust for my venerable age. But that's only if you consider mid-thirties to be a venerable age. If you do then that's excellent, probably the easiest respect I ever earned from someone.

I'm messing with you of course.

I doubt I could have done it if I had previously only played a few times at 9-10 years of age, then took a 20 year hiatus.

That's true, but stuff like that revolves around competitive PvP and the like.

That isn't to say the Doom community isn't competitive, they just seem to put that energy to better use. It's one reason Doom has so many WADS and content. Doom also has a Deathmatch sphere but again, it's different and more focused around pure fun. At least it was, not sure what the scene is like now. I haven't done DM in Doom since the 00's.

I primarily played it against my brother, because he was always killing me with friendly (rocket) fire in co-op. Thus, I got a kick out of hammering him in DM.

I would often ignore or avoid other players until I killed him, if someone else got him first then they were effectively marked for death. Not because they killed my brother, but because they robbed me of that chance. Honestly, half the time the other players were just background noise.

It wasn't serious though, you know how siblings are, they vex each other. We had a lot of laughs.

Well I'll be 34 tomorrow so, yeah :D we're both at a venerable age. We're ancient in the gaming community - well maybe not this one, but most modern game's communities!

Yeah, it might be a good achievement to beat E1 after not playing for so long. Funny thing is that I have some videos where I actually play E1 for the first time ever after all these years and I couldn't get passed E1M3 without dying, so to be able to defeat the whole episode in one run, felt great. But it sure took some time before getting those skills back, since I've mostly been playing consoles for the last ten years. The mouse+keyboard skills really takes a fall after being a console jockey for a long time.

Sure. there's competetion and there's toxicity/hate against other players. I feel that the kids nowadays is extremeley rude and would benefit from a good whooping IRL. They are mean and bully each other online, and I am of the opinion that while this happened back in the 90s as well, it was still more friendly. The older boys used to physically beat me if I performed good in Quake, they tied me up and whatever, but they were still friends/rolemodels. The same guys that beat me after I killed them in Quake, beat the living shit out of a older, fat kid who harassed me. That wouldn't happen today, because the kids of today never had LAN parties or a club where they brought their PCs in order to play online.

Me and my older brother played alot and fought about it, hehe. He's a great and avid player to this day and he helps me with my gaming/pc problems. I, however, have helped him loose over 50kg and counting since February so we have a great bond other than games now when we're both adult.

So we did fight alot over gaming, and he was great and beat me in all games (he still does) but it was the old games that had us bond over gaming in general - when we were physically together and played Quake, Doom, Duk3d, Diablo whatever. Now we're 1000km apart and can rarley play because he plays top of the linde modern games with his 3000EUR computer and I have a 2013 ROG Laptop, and consoles (which he hates).

But we did play some Quake 1 recently and it was as going back to 1998 - ie he kicked my arse.

I don't really know why I'm talking about this right now ;D
