Not every map in this mapset elected to use all 20 sectors. This map, for example, used 12 sectors. Thank you for the clarification! I was obviously under the wrong impression :) Edited September 2, 2020 by klaymeb 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Horus Posted September 2, 2020 The vast majority do use 20 sectors, there are only about 4 or 5 maps that are <20 sectors iirc 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Well, sector merging is a thing. You will see many later maps that feel like they aren't made with 20 sectors. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
DuckReconMajor Posted September 2, 2020 like last month, glBoom+ 2.5.1.7um, skill 4, pistol starts with saves, no complevel specified MAP01: Wet My Appetite Really really great start. I love this sky texture and the skybase look on the outer edges of the map. Beautiful and fun map. I am amped. MAP02 - “Nukaged-Powered Clastrocomputer” I am loving the designs of these first two maps as they are because of the sector limit. Almost like a more fun Wolfenstein, no random sector height detailing just for the sake of it. The flatness I am a fan of so far; just the feel of simplicity amidst what ends up still being well detailed. Spoiler 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr Masker Posted September 2, 2020 Map 02 Nukaged-Powered Clastrocomputer A linear but overall enjoyable map and fitting for a early map tone while still adding some diverse enemies! good stuff also the guy above me on my screen used speech marks on his second title but not on his first cmon man 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
DFF Posted September 2, 2020 MAP02: Nukaged-Powered Claustrocomputer by Redead-Ita (100% kills/100% items/100%secrets) Deaths: 0 Blind Run|UV|Continuous|Trailblazer 1.5 This map is a prime example of what I think the average map in this wad may end up looking like, long corridor maps with similar/reused sector details and very few to no secrets. The repeating details is a good trick and expected, the lack of secrets is also expected but something that does make me sad, hopefully more later maps still find ways to include secrets. This map is an odd one, something about the design is unfamiliar, with its narrow tech-like corridors of black and the several lifts throughout. The detailing is serviceable, but some stretches of corridor can get rather dull with their mono-chromatic ceilings. The combat is fine, nothing big to say other than its good for map02. Overall an ok map that has a very odd but unique style to it. Combat is fair, design is minimal but still decent for the limitations. Lack of secrets is not a negative per se, but a map with secrets in this WAD will definitely gain bonus points. Pirx Posted September 2, 2020 (edited) so let's see about this mayhem in gzdoom, uv pistol starts. MAP01 - “Wet My Appetite” by Dragonfly well, i certainly got appetite to play doom from this map. excellent opener. non-linear, chill music, and i appreciate the texturing, especially the brown stripes, and the flooding effect. however, the outdoor area kept eluding me, and none of the videos here showed it. finally turned off the music, and if i flipped the switch at the imps left to the starting point and ran over the platform, i could catch that locked door open - i guess that's the intended route? because the "you have found a secret" message was displayed only when i teleported back. and dragonfly working on prodeus too? i'm following that game since i saw it on steam. MAP02 - “Nukaged-Powered Clastrocomputer” by Redead-ITA the automap says actually "claustrocomputer", so that's tron in a a claustrophobic computer i guess. red and blue pcb inside, thick power lines and a small nukage pool. also wooden boards and riveted steel plates. must be intel's 14+++++ nm chips in 100 years. a bit blocky map, but not super tight. the 2 revs vs a manc infight was fun. forgot about the rockets and preferred to beat up everything, including the baron at the exit. noticed now that there are some new graphics, a dropped shotgun and boots added to the armor? that thing looks like green overalls with boots. MAP03 - “Bubble Home Bunker” by DynamiteKaitorn a home sweet home bunker with many lockers and some light switches. very square and flat map with functional texturing. kind of wolf3d in doom. gameplay is equally simple, but i still had some fun with the blue key reveal. i mean, i had a bad feeling about a backpack and all those shell boxes around. and then those revenants came like a swarm of hornets. held a chokepoint but they still kept pushing. brave revenants. no wonder they had forgotten only 2 imps at the exit. that's a shotgun with a shorter barrel. RottingZombie Posted September 2, 2020 HMP Continuous. I liked this map a little less than 01. Still decent though. Revenant beat me up a bit after that elevator! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
loveless Posted September 2, 2020 prboom+, no saves, uv pistol starts map 2 deaths 0 another short and sweet bit of fun. oddly enough, the only complaint i have about this map is a visual one. there wasn't anything aesthetically coherent going on asides from lifts and doors. that out of the way, onto gameplay. early midtier monsters against sg-only in tight spaces? woo! ssg comes a bit late into the map but the early berserk made everything alright. miss a few shots? it's okie, just punch things down. myhm20-2-loveless.7z 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr Masker Posted September 2, 2020 Its the third in the UK so I'm doin it now ok bruv The difference and change in textures give this map a nice change of setting but I was felt like the decorated building setting could've had some nice secrets so it was suprising to see that it had 0 secrets. I felt like alot of the key traps were esentialy the same and some diversity in that field would've been nice. Overall a map with a memorable setting but with some flaws but don't we all have that? Also tf is up with the blue door 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Capellan Posted September 3, 2020 MAP03 Flat, UGLY, and engages with the sector limit in only the most basic, thoroughly uninteresting way. I'd like to say the gameplay makes up for it, but it's pretty bad too. Would have been better off only having 47 maps in the WAD, IMO. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
DFF Posted September 3, 2020 (edited) MAP03: Bubble Home Bunker by Dynamitekaitorn (100% kills/100% items/100%secrets) Deaths: 0 Blind Run|UV|Continuous|Trailblazer 1.5 A rather cozy jaunt through w very wolfenstein-esque base. Personally not a design i find interesting in a doom map but its not terrible. The texture use here is very interesting and blends together well by being from the same background walls. I would not go as far to say its a terrible map and should be rejected, but I do think this maybe should have been a bonus map reserve. The map brings nothing exciting, the fights are uninspired with two or so traps, one being just a closet of skeletons and whatnot. No secrets, and a quick run through a weird base with a very dull exit. I give this map a bit more forgiveness as it feels like a more beginner level map (if im wrong I apologize), with very basic ideas for sector conservation, and the use of doors manages to eat up precious resources quickly. Just by combining sectors I personally could save at least 6 more sectors in this map without modifying the look of the map or game play in any major noticeable way. The use of line triggers with floating connections away from walls at least shows some competency and understanding of resource management so kudos to that. With all this being said, yes its a basic map and kinda a dull one. But its fast and if a rather newer attempt to mapping is not bad. However it probably will go rather low on my list. MAP34: Mild Terror at Vacation Station by Impie (100% kills/100% items/100%secrets) Deaths: 0 Blind Run|UV|Continuous|Trailblazer 1.5 I was not expecting this. A very bizarre map that gives me bizarre feelings. One one side the map is mostly large open hallways with no major traps but the enemies already occupying the area. There isn't a lot to explore and not much interesting landmarks. However the only quaint music paired with the rather warm and funny space station design does feel a tad endearing, with the doom-cute bar and pool definitely being memorable and cool, from the umbrella tables to the surf board. Its doubly interesting to play this map just after map03 because honestly They feel very much the same, with mostly flat corridors of light brown office-tech (?) and very few traps. Personally I think this is just an overall better version of map03, with a lot more interesting design for the same cost of sectors. I would have swapped this map with map03, however the skies may not have allowed for that. (Upon further inspection I was incorrect in assuming this was vanilla, as it definitely is boom, which means I may judge maps a bit harder with that added assumption, and these two maps can be swapped). TheNoob_Gamer Posted September 3, 2020 (edited) MAP03: Bubble Home Bunker (X) This one feels like I'm trapped in an apartment due to lockdown and started having hallucinations of demons invading my home; try kicking me out and agreeing with me on what an architecture I'm in. Too flat, 7/10. It's not bad as a main map, but again not something I would replay. The texture usage is pretty cute though. MAP34: Mild Terror at Vacation Station map03 but augmented and in space. Also with lots of drinking. Edited September 3, 2020 by TheNoob_Gamer 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Biodegradable Posted September 3, 2020 (edited) MAP03 - Bubble Home Bunker UV | Continuous with Saves | GZDoom + Zagemod A rather quaint little map with some interesting textures, but otherwise uninspiring layout with a flat design and pretty predictable though entertaining monster closets. Not sure how experienced DynamiteKaitorn is as a mapper, so if they're only just getting into it then I'd be lenient and say that it's definitely competent and nothing felt amateur or lacking in polish. However, what's here is just okay. Not sure if this was rushe or the limitation of the megaWAD's theme left DK struggling a bit when it came to trying to think of a design, but it's just sadly lacking here. It's not great but not hot wet garbage either. Overall, I think the map could've been left in the oven to cook a little more, if you know what I mean. TheNoob_Gamer Posted September 3, 2020 (edited) 9 minutes ago, Biodegradable said: left DK drawing a blank when it came to trying to think of a design, IIRC on the development thread they decided to take the 20 sector limit literally. That is, putting only 20 shapes together (as opposed to combining like 50-200 shapes to make the statistics say 20 sectors in the editor) to make a map. kalaeth Posted September 3, 2020 HMP, no mods, continuous play, trying not to save during levels : MAP03 - short, feels unfinished, and it has no bite at all in HMP. Not much more I have to say. It would improve if after opening the blue door it led you outside for a small fight. death count : 0 total deaths : 4 ps: I've been playing the bonus maps and taking notes and I will post them when I finish the last one. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Pechudin Posted September 3, 2020 MAP03: Bubble Home Bunker (Kills: 53/53, Secrets: Undefined, Deaths: 0) So this is a Wolf3D map? I understand houses tend to have lots of right angles, but surely some walls could've met at non-right angles. Texturing is cute and consistent, and uses a lot of nice alpha textures, even if there sure does seem to be a lot of microwave ovens lodged in the walls. Gameplay is basic pest control, clearing the halls from the demons, with one dangerous trap being the Bone Squad and their supporting troupe (even if their role was mostly blocking you from getting away). I did almost die, but that was mostly due to getting stuck on the walls and then eating a high damage roll rocket. For those involved in the project, did you use the LostResource pack (from NEIS), or some other resource pack? When I tried using the alpha and beta resources in my map I had trouble since some textures were not a power of 2 wide, and looked odd in less advanced ports (anything not ZDooM and above). Did you modify the textures so they are a power of 2 wide? Verdict: Cute but a bit amateurish. THB I expected that at any moment the walls would fall around me and reveal a grand palace, or ravine, or some other structure. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

klaymeb Posted September 3, 2020 (edited) MAP03 - “Bubble Home Bunker” by DynamiteKaitorn UV / Pistol start / GZDoom I can't really say a lot about this map. I didn't particularly care for it; The lackluster combat, too narrow corridors and the bland texturing made it "just a map I have to finish". The blue key fight is the most difficult in the map; not to say that it's hard, and it's not because of the enemies. It's difficult because of the extremely tight corridors that make movement real annoying. I don't necessarily agree with myself on everything! Roofi Posted September 3, 2020 (edited) Let me join the party ! I will write very short reviews. Map 01 by Dragonfly Pretty little blue and grey base with water. I liked it when the floors went down to create an "arena". Map 02 by Redead-ITA Small indoor level with a fairly orthogonal layout. Simple and fun. Bonus point for not using all 20 sectors! Map 03 by DynamiteKaitorn A Wolfenstein style map with a flat and mazy layout. Honestly I liked it! Special mention for the key traps which are excellent even if easy to escape. DuckReconMajor Posted September 3, 2020 MAP03 - “Bubble Home Bunker” glBoom+ 2.5.1.7um, skill 4, pistol starts with saves, no complevel specified I love it. More Wolf3D-ish goodness. Difficulty was right on point with what I usually enjoy, even when the big swarm rushed in on the blue key. I keep wall rumping in search of secrets, knowing there won't be many in this wad. I feel like someone's going to make us feel comfortable then trick us though.
