NaZa Posted September 2, 2020 (edited) September, 2020 The yearly leader board Standard Leaderboard 2 - MAP26: Roofi - Accidentally jumps into a slipgate and despite playing for 7 hours almost clutches it. Mad. 2 - MAP24: WH-Wilou84 - Gets engulfed in the flames pretty much instantly. One does not simply get out of Post Mortem. (spechits emulation off) 2 - MAP22: NaZa - Spearhading a new season of Dancing with the Rockets. 3 - MAP20: Bdubzzz - A baron of hell appeared! 2 - MAP18: Daerik - You are free! You are free from the Top 3 :) Expert rocket catch as well. 2 - MAP18: Beginner - It... Wh- What? Ouch. Yikes. That might be among the worst deaths in Ironman to date. 2 - MAP14: Anima Zero - Could've exited the level but gave the enemies an extra kill. Very sweet, Anima. GJ! 3 - MAP14: UncleTito - Revenants might have been on the ledges, but the cyberdemon was still peeking. 2 - MAP14: Arbys550 - Clears the most difficult parts of the map out and then gets mortified by the sheer sight of hell knights in 64-corridors. 2 - MAP13: Pseudonaut - Centrifugal force for the win. Couldn't break out of it by the time the mancubus aimed elsewhere. 2 - MAP13: galileo31dos01 - Is this what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? 2 - MAP13: Horus - Got caged. 2 - MAP12: SSGmaster - This is why AI domination will never happen. This, right here. Look at where the spider is, plasma!! 2 - MAP12: Suitepee - "We are close to the pain now, but not yet." 1 - MAP12: head_cannon - Best of the blind runners runs away from danger into more danger. And more danger. And a lava pool. 2 - MAP11: RjY - What a good deed, leaving the cyberdemon aliv- oh wait- 2 - MAP09: Crusader No Regret - Oww! Door-stalling gone horribly wrong after a revenant kick. 2 - MAP07: dt_ - Gets stuck on an arachnotron and realizes why rockets aren't the ideal weapon for the opening encounter. 1 - MAP07: ReaperAA - Taking time with killing spiders should become a norm, but I can understand not heeding it in this level. (DNF) 2 - MAP07: Fadri - The arachnophobia kicked in. 1 - MAP06: ragerat - Negotiates with hell knights behind closed doors. 2 - MAP05: NoisyVelvet - I really thought it would have been shit revenant rolls. Just proves that you should never underestimate imp power. 1 - MAP05: Loud Silence - Now THAT was a heroic imp! Too bad for the end of the run, though... (DNF) 2 - MAP03: seed - Ouch. 1 - MAP03: DavidN - I was hoping you'd hold on and "Nought health!" wouldn't be said. And it technically wasn't said? 2 - MAP01: Pegleg - Decides the first room is his kingdom. After all, why haste to reveal Hell if Hell can reveal itself? Prepared Leaderboard # - MAP14: Crusader No Regret - Stays in limbo between Eden and the Cloud City. # - MAP05: John Wheel - Eats plasma along the way. He shan't pass. # - MAP03: Pegleg - Dumps it in The Dumpster. What is the Doomworld Ironman League? The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag at the bottom of the post for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom! Now, this is the 50th Challenge of the League, so I thought it'd be fitting to go all out on this one and finally do something I've been planning to do for a while and for which I was vying - Hell Revealed, -complevel 2. The ultimate Ironman run, in a way. Yes, I could've picked something more modern; yes, I'm aware BtSX E2 and Eviternity exist; yes, I'm aware the length and monster scope might turn some people away. But, there's two major reasons why I chose it: a lot of the members (by extension, Ironman regulars) have played it and thus have foreknowledge on some of the more dickish maps and traps, and also - it's a fitting 50th challenge, a sort of an "anniversary" for Ironman. As of the set itself, I don't think there's much to say. It's just that. Hell Revealed. No introduction, no flavor text is necessary. Go there, kill them. This is a callback to the first challenge's marathon (back when Ironman was also an endurance competition and not just a survival competition.) Apologies. I'd also like to apologize for the boards and obituaries missing. I've no excuses for June and July. I do have an excuse for last month, though - during the weekend, Mon & Tue, I've felt quite unwell physically and couldn't really do much. I'll of course update them, but I didn't want to get this thread out too late, considering it's a 30 map slog. I'll try to improve this month. I apologize for this thread also being a tad bit late. There's also something I'd ask you to consider. As you know, for a while now, there's been a sort of "final" version of ZDoom: ZDoom 2.8.1. I was wondering whether I should allow runners to submit ZDoom demos using that stable version. Why is this a question? Because that way, we could broaden the scope of Ironman to also include WADs compatible with ZDoom. Food for thought. Suggestions? If you have any more suggestions for the future of Ironman, feel free to comment. Warnings about the set! On MAP05, there's a plasma rifle next to a floor that raises when you step on it. If you jump on the plasma rifle while the floor is going up, the floor won't lower when you press on it. One of the switches in the level lowers the floor again (thanks, Roofi!) Essential Info Doom II: Hell on Earth as the IWAD selected. Compatibility level 2, or "(Doom (strict))" for ZDoom derivative ports. Time estimate: A lot of time. Quite a lot of time. 30 + 2 maps > Download Hell Revealed (is that really necessary though?) prboom-plus.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file hr.wad (hrmus.wad) -complevel 2 -skill 4 -record demo_name.lmp Spoiler There are two competitions: Standard and Prepared: To compete successfully in the Standard competition: your first play of the selected WAD(s) constitutes your one and only attempt for the month. To compete successfully in the Prepared competition: your one and only attempt for the month is determined BY YOU immediately before play and may follow any prior number of active (playing the set) preparation that is strictly for practice/inspection purposes only. You cannot compete in the Standard competition after submitting a run to the Prepared competition. You may submit the first of your practice attempts to the Standard competition. UV only (excepting 1CC format), continuous recording. No pistol-starting each level. Demos (PrBoom+, GLBoom, Eternity or Chocolate), stream highlights and video recordings are the only accepted proofs. You must link to these runs in the thread. No additional WADs may be loaded. No inspection of the WAD(s)'s content in an editor if you are submitting a Standard run. No cheat codes and no features that result in behavior beyond what is possible in the intended source port (e.g. freelook, jumping and crouching in a boom set). This includes dynamic lights and brightmaps. If streaming or recording videos using an advanced source port with compatibility options, you must display these settings on-screen before your run. In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom(strict)" will suffice. If you choose to stream/record your run for video rather than provide a demo and you die before completing a single level, either on the first map of a set OR because a single level was selected for the month, you must display the number of monsters killed/remaining in the level before you quit. You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the game having completed more secret levels than his/her competitors will rank higher than them. You cannot load a game having progressed past the save point. You cannot consult Doom Builder during your run to check for map details. If the recording of your official run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be used to register a DNF result. Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen will disqualify your run. If you are competing in the Standard competition, you are required to affix one of three numbers to your run informing the League of your degree of familiarity with the map/set played. Note that your evaluation should only take into consideration the content covered in your run (e.g. if you remember only one part of a level in a set you haven't played before but never reach that level, you should list your run as a [1] instead of [2]): This is a blind run. If I have played or watched any of the level/set being played before, I cannot remember any details that would offer a reasonable advantage over truly blind players. * This is not a blind run. I have familiarity with the set - played the level/set before, or watched it being played, and can remember some details that would offer a reasonable advantage over blind players. This is not a blind run. I have passively prepared for the competition - watched the level/set being played via stream, demo or video after it was announced as this month's challenge. * "Reasonable" in this instance asks you to consider whether the details in question are worth committing to memory. As in, you would thank the person who gave you this information with a straight face and not expect to be laughed at for being an utter berk. Arbys550 Posted September 2, 2020 (edited) Aw crap. I really don't like this wad, but I'll still give it a try. My anger and annoyance will probably seep into my gameplay and cause me to die in some stupid way. At least it's not Hell Revealed 2! Pseudonaut Posted September 2, 2020 Category 2, died stupidly on map13 at around 1:49:50. Still not too disappointed, I feel like this is pretty good. Foreknowledge goes a long way on this wad. Spoiler This death wasn't even caused by that trap. You know which one I'm talking about. I just spaced out while circle-strafing mancubi and took two high-damage fireballs that took me from 100% health to 0%. I've maxed this map before from a pistol start, and I think I could have survived it on this run. I had a good plan for that trap involving the BFG that I grabbed on a previous map, but I never got to find out if it would work, sadly. As an aside, if anyone tries to do this totally blind, that person won't make it past map13. Mark my words. hrironman-pseudonaut.zip 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

NaZa Posted September 3, 2020 BEFORE I FORGET: There's a softlock on MAP05. Near the end of a level there's a plasma rifle. Do not jump on it while the floor is raising up, because to my knowledge, you cannot lower it back down from the level below. Once you make it up there, proceeding further will start lowering the floor back down, and with a well timed jump, you could get the plasma rifle. Will put it into the OP. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
seed Posted September 3, 2020 I've only now realized I actually missed the last month, lol. So it's finally time to break the ice with HR. I may have played it in full it will make exactly no difference. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

It's definetely not a softlock , the floor is repeatable. You are supposed to grab the Plasma gun this way. You only have to do annoying backtracking to lower it (the switch guarded by bunch of zombies if I remember well) Edited September 3, 2020 by Roofi 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I wasn't sure whether it was a softlock or not because I remember on a past playthrough I noclipped through it in anger. But it makes sense - thanks for reporting. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Suitepee Posted September 3, 2020 https://www.twitch.tv/videos/730387414 I died on map 12 by a self-fulfilling prophecy involving 2-shotting a Cyberdemon with a BFG. Standard run with a tiny bit of knowledge from playing it a few years ago, I guess. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

I survived several evil traps only to be humiliated by a hell knight in tight quarters on map 6. It gets much more evil than that. The authors themselves have described map11 as "the first real challenge in Hell Revealed", and even that map is no big deal compared to something like map22 or map24. I still expect that some crazy person will survive the whole set. 2 hours ago, ragerat said: I noticed people react with different items. NaZa Posted September 4, 2020 (edited) Ugh. Dead on MAP22, category 2. Took me a bit over an hour to get to MAP12, a bit over two hours to get to MAP18 and a bit over 3 hours to get to MAP22, so this wasn't as timely as expected, but the next maps would've likely taken an hour and a half. I expect if someone survives it'll take them 5-6 hours, as I gained a lot of time by straight up skipping some portions of the maps (and grabbing a key on M17). To be honest, I expected to die on this map the most. It wasn't looking likely I'd survive it to die on the maps after it, and I knew if I had some stroke of genius or luck I'd be able to survive MAP18. This was hands down incredibly intense stuff. I am pretty sure I was down to less than 50 HP on maps 13, 15, 16 and 18 (featuring a double old-fashioned rocket catch - thank God I had 200/200!). I managed to fully neutralize MAP13 with a simple trick, even though I nearly died before exploiting said trick due to infinitely tall barons - and MAP14 really isn't too difficult on continuous play if you have a good strategy for it, even if it has very close quarters Cyberdemon battles. MAP18 I was pleasantly surprised to do so well on, barring that godawful misstep in the Cyber den, and I think it got to my head after I took some weird archvile damage on MAP19 out of all maps. But alas, I made the grave mistake on MAP22 of letting the quartet of Cyberdemons rain their rockets down from the big building, which severely limited my movement opportunities. I then tried to two-shot a couple of Cyberdemons and it didn't quite pay off... and this happened. Too bad, I was really going rather well, but that's Doom. Also, I skipped the secret levels because they're incredibly risky to play. In a month where maybe 1 or 2 people will survive, I don't think secret levels are a good gamble. dwironman_sep20_naza.zip Edited September 4, 2020 by NaZa 8 Quote Share this post Link to post

I just assumme everyone uses god for an ''amazing'' reaction and the rest is just regular likes. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
NaZa Posted September 4, 2020 I use invis for something I've rarely seen before and I find rather interesting; soulsphere for the generic like or "thanks for posting"; invulnerability for something that's super cool and really nice, but more often for something sarcastic, ironic or funny; megasphere for an immense thing or achievement in Doom, or a really great map or set or picture. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

There's one big problem with that...KINDA gotta remember which portal takes you up to where you can reach it. Me? I didn't remember which one I was supposed to take and just picked at random. The one I picked decided to re-enact my hilarious death from the second half of the Estranged beta back in the day. Of course, with no revs around, some big 'ol moo man had to pick up the slack. Roofi Posted September 6, 2020 A bit useless but I share just in case. Before making my demo, I made my own HRMUS. I chose the music according to the memories and feelings I had on each map. The original HRMUS does not cover all the music, so I wanted to have a complete OST. Most of the midis comes from the wad "180 minutes pour Vivre". HRMUS_ro 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
WH-Wilou84 Posted September 6, 2020 Hell Revealed... Couldn't let that one pass by without trying :) Spoiler Took a wrong turn at the beginning of map 24. Arch-Viles joyfully seized the opportunity to roast me, and my corpse now adds to the massive pile of marines who died in this legendary map. It's been fun though ! Almost 6 hours... Could've died on map 22 as well, the Cyberdemon pack guarding Blue key almost got me. I think I skipped a beat at that point :) Thanks NaZa for giving me a chance to replay this classic. Obviously, Hell Revealed has fallen from the "hardest wad of all time" throne a long time ago, most notably when compared to abominations like Flotsam, Dimensions, Stardate 20X7 or the latest Sunder maps. Besides, some of HR's concepts and ideas definitely belong to another era of Doom mapping, most maps in it would seem unnecessarily grindy by today's standards (looking at you, map 18). Still, it's definitely a must-play even to this day, and a fantastic experience once you pass the first 10 maps and reach the real "core" of HR.@Roofi as regards to map 20, I assume you're talking about the lava pit in front of the pentagram ? This one puzzled me as well, haha, I didn't remember there was a switch that raises in the previous room when you get down the stairs. This switch raises a passageway allowing us to cross the lava. hr-Ironman-wh.zip 7 Quote Share this post Link to post

Fadri Posted September 7, 2020 Hi! This is the first time I try participating here, so I hope I did it right. XD I completed this wad a few months ago for the first time... Yeah, I know, everyone has played this a long time ago, but because of its fame I was too scared to play it for decades! (It wasn't that bad after having played wads that are considered "normal difficulty" today, like Eviternity and others). So I don't know the names of the categories, but I wasn't trying it blindly. Category 2, I think? That doesn't mean that I remembered everything, I got lost a few times, specially in MAP03. I also wasn't able to do the easiest jump to enter a door in that level and had to try it like ten times. And took me a little while to find the switch that lowers the platform again in MAP05 after grabbing the plasma. XD At the end, I died very soon in MAP07, just the map that I thought I would beat easily because "it's just running in circles, nothing can go wrong here". Anyway, here's my demo! SSGmaster Posted September 9, 2020 I died to an unexpected trap (well, I expected a trap but not that kind of trap) on map 12 with 102 kills, category 2. I was never a fan of HR, I started to play Doom in 2005 and HR level design was already dated by that point.Youtube link hr.zip 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Bdubzzz Posted September 10, 2020 Dead on Map 20 Cat 3 as I watched some streams before doing my run. Spoiler Died to a baron that popped out of a floor as I was firing rockets at a vile, couldn't see anything and then the vile finished me off, pretty annoying death tbh but o well.
