Obsidian Posted October 22, 2020 Honestly the maps themselves aren't that pretty, but the premise was to build an E2 replacement that channelled Nihility: Infinite Teeth and the Doom 1 beta textures to some degree. I had these grand ideas about making ambient MIDIs to accompany the maps and have this general air of malaise over the whole thing: it's a cool enough idea that I don't want to dismiss it out of hand and with the limitations of NaNoWadMo off the table it'll probably be easier to put together over the next few months. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheOrganGrinder Posted October 23, 2020 Okay, I've played and enjoyed Nihility and that sounds pretty cool, so I hope you do get the time to work on your project to the extent that it deserves. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
croc_rock Posted October 24, 2020 (edited) The layout for map 3 is finished, just need to add more monsters, pickups and secrets. This will probably be the last map I make, that way I have plenty of time to make the others better. Spoiler You start in the room on the left in the first pic, teleport to the bottom right in the second pic, flip a switch, teleport to the 3rd room and flip another switch that opens the exit door in the bottom right area. Edit: Also, @jerrysheppy, I was going to mention you in the Additional Credits section of the .txt file for helping me out with the criticism, would you be fine with that? Edit 2: Map finished! This will definitely be the last one. Spoiler Edited October 26, 2020 by croc_rock 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

"JL" was too short Posted October 29, 2020 Damn, this thread fell to the fourth page? Well, I guess I'm as much to blame as anyone for that. Here's what will probably be the last map I finish this month (for my extremely loose definition of 'finish'): It's a multi-story base map. One area for the upper floors, one area for the lower floors, and one area that is... somewhere else. :> Planning to sling some ideas at at least one more map file during these last few days, but not expecting to "finish" anything more. 10 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gothic Posted October 29, 2020 I slowed down for a few days, so I may not end with 32 maps by the end of the month, but I have almost a full megawad and unlike my previous attempt, I will finish it later on November. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
NeedHealth Posted October 29, 2020 @Ryath Sorry, I won't be able to finish my map in time. But I did 2/3 of a map at least. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dylan Omen Posted October 29, 2020 I've been keeping up with regular mapping, but have not even remotely achieved the goal of 8 maps. so far I have four, and one I intend to scrap, but I'll just say I ended up going for quality over quantity. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Phobus Posted October 29, 2020 My mapping dropped off of a cliff a couple of weeks into the month, so I've not really made the progress one would hope/expect. On the plus side, I did make some progress, and fully expect to finish the map eventually - perhaps even next time I'm keen for some mapping. @MidnightMage I'm not sure you need the comma between "dark" and "slaughter speedmaps" on your first image. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Comma between "dark" and "slaughter" looks correct to me. But where I do see a comma issue is between "eye-strainingly" and "dark", because the only thing it makes sense for "eye-strainingly" to modify is the adjective "dark": eye-strainingly dark. If it's meant to be modifying the noun "speedmaps" (or "slaughter speedmaps"), it should be in adjective form like the rest of the items in that comma-separated list: eye-straining. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Phobus Posted October 29, 2020 @jerrysheppy Oh yeah, he definitely doesn't need that one. The one I'm questioning is whether slaughter is part of the listed description, or part of the "speedmaps" noun. I think it's the latter. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Alper002 Posted October 29, 2020 I myself have been decently successfully working on my hub for vanilla Hexen! I'm not close to being done with it at all, but I will make sure to finish it even after the month is over! 9 Quote Share this post Link to post

He could be talking about speedmaps that are both dark and slaughter-y, or "slaughter speedmaps" as a single conceptual entity that, in the case of these slaughter speedmaps, happen to be dark! :D 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Omniarch Posted October 29, 2020 In keeping with the tone of the thread, I was not able to achieve my initial goal. I did manage to finish 3 maps and make the hub areas for three more, a far cry from the E4 episode-replacement I had in mind. Still, before this month I'd only ever completed two maps, so I'd consider it a win overall. I've learned a great deal, and am pleased with the results, such as they are. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheOrganGrinder Posted October 29, 2020 (edited) Yeah, I've had other projects, commitments, and conversations occupying my attention for most of the past week so I think at this point my goal is to round out and tidy up the two maps I have completed and bundle them together with the appropriate music and map names, rather than hoping for a last-minute surge of inspiration and productivity when I've found myself with other things on my plate. Yoshiatom Posted October 30, 2020 My NaNoWADMo project is done, at least in the sense it's in a releasable state. While I didn't get to my intended goal, I'm pleased I actually have something to show off and I didn't procrastinate the whole thing away. And there's a good chance I'll take part next year, so who knows I might have something bigger and better after this small step. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
croc_rock Posted October 30, 2020 It should be noted that I wasn't working on a particular project, my wad will be 3 random, not-connected (and vanilla-compatible I think) maps designed around pistol start UV. there won't be difficulty settings but it shouldn't be too hard. all that's left now is to test it with a few different ports, I've only used PrBoom+ 2.5.1.4 to test so far. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
NoReason Posted October 30, 2020 I once again joined this unannounced, mostly so that no one would expect anything of me in case I lose motivation, or I have no time, etc. Thankfully, none of those scenarios happened and I was able to make 34 maps. It's not entirely finished just yet, still need to do some testing here and there, but it's very close. I should hopefully have a thread up for it by next week. 8 Quote Share this post Link to post

DavidN Posted October 30, 2020 (edited) Declaring my project finished with 1 day to go :) It ended up being called Ascent of Titan! scwiba Posted October 31, 2020 Don't know about the rest of you but there's just about a day left where I am. So whether you've already posted your WAD, you're polishing up what you've got, or you're trying to squeeze out those last maps, thank you for being part of this year's NaNoWADMo! I've been feeling a bit bad that I definitely won't make it to my goal this time, and I know there are others in the same position, but seeing the work everyone is showing off has made me feel a heck of a lot better. We're all in this together and there's already a ton of awesome stuff coming out of this NaNo, with more sure to come! 8 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kokoro Hane Posted October 31, 2020 October ended up a lot more busy for me and my brother than we expected, so sadly our collab will not be finished on time. Despite that, we will most definitely finish this mini wad and hopefully get it out before year's end! I just wanted to say NaNoWADMo was FUN because I finally kicked my butt into gear to learn map making and actually finished an entire map that I am fairly proud of and can't wait to show when the wad is ready. Even though it pales in comparison to my brother's awesome map 2 that follows lol 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
croc_rock Posted October 31, 2020 Finished! This has been a blast, will definitely see if I can enter next year :) Thanks Ryath! 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
The_SloVinator Posted October 31, 2020 Well, so what have I learned from this project? I set my goal to speedmap every day in October but end up speedmapping only for two or three days till I lost ideas for the next few maps. Changed from speedmapping to causal mapping & that helped a bit but not much. I made 5 maps & I consider that as an achievement since I have never made 5 maps in a month before, at least not the ones that I really adore. Unfortunately I failed to reach my goal of finishing E1 replacement in a month but I do plan to keep these maps for my future projects or perhaps actually make an E1 replacement. Who know. It was an interesting experience & I don't regret joining it. Bottom line is this. Speedmapping isn't for me. I prefer when I put down the layout of my map on the paper & write down what I'll include in my map. Then start making it in the builder. It is possible to get good at speedmapping but it definitely isn't for everyone. Maybe in the future I'll try it again for shits & giggles. Thank you for this project. :) 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Omniarch Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) I suppose I ought to post what I've made. This won't be an official release, due to the state of the wad, but those curious may find some enjoyment in it. The wad is called Thy Flesh Removed, originally intended to be full E4 replacement for Ultimate Doom. It requires a limit-removing port, but has only been tested with Crispy Doom 5.8.0. The finished maps are E4M1, E4M2 and E4M6, with E4M3 unfinished but potentially interesting. The two and half cut levels are not present. Anyway, here's the download: thy_flesh_removed.zip And some screenshots: Spoiler Edited October 31, 2020 by Omniarch 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
