Responding to GmanLives' Unity Doom video (Removed)

I just wanted to make a rebuttal to some of the weird and unfounded claims Gman made in his recent video.. It got over 100k views in 2 days despite being filled with nonsensical statements and claims, so here's my attempt to clarify things!

 

Edit: He flat out removed the original. Not exactly my intention.. I hope he just did so to avoid misinformation. I’m not really a fan of putting people down and I felt that the small handful of jokes in here were pretty innocuous, not meant to be personal jabs or anything like that.

It does, but i get a mocking sense of feeling from it. As in, ''You sure spend a lot of time analyzing my video''. But assumption is the mother of all fuck ups, so i leave it in the middle and say its a comment.

Maybe its a way of deflecting criticism away or not able to understand what the issue with the video is. But again, assumption...

Although the "ports & mod support" part could be a bit better. If you don't mind, I'll give you a little bit of more insight on it.

Eternity also has its own content definition language called Eternity Definition File (EDF), therefore it supports vanilla mods, Boom mods, and its own mods (albeit very rare, with this mod being a contemporary example of it).

It'd be nice to see a mention of a few others such as EDGE (with its DDF/RTS/COAL), Doom Legacy (and others with FraggleScript support) and Vavoom (with VavoomC).

 

Otherwise, this is a good counter-argument. GmanLives has been problematic with some stuff like this, with the infamous Blood: Fresh Supply review he has done.

I'm just about to watch the video now. I'm very glad you took the time to do make this @Doomkid. I tried to add some comments pointing out inaccuracies but leaving feedback via youtube comments is like writing on a bathroom stall wall and expecting someone to take it to heart.

It’s sad what direction he’s gone in. He had a lot of promise when he was a small channel but now, idk. My biggest issue isn’t that he gets things wrong, it’s that there are people that will believe anything he says, and instead of researching for themselves, they just assume anyone that vocally speaks out on his errors are just jealous troll haters, and his attitude of “no u” is really distasteful. He should just admit it when he makes a mistake, it’s not that fucking big of a deal to be wrong sometimes.

Good job jumping on this 'Kid! I enjoy a good GManLives video as much as the next person-scrolling-through-YouTube-aimlessly, but it seems like he has a tendency to be sloppy with facts when it comes to Doom, at least, particularly by misremembering G/Z source port additions as parts of the core, original game. Given the size of his audience and the fact that his brand is "FPS guru" (complete with a Doomguy avatar), there's a lot of potential for spreading misinformation there.

You know, that first part of the video reminded me of something; can we PLEASE stop referring to this version as "Unity DOOM" or some other variation thereof?

 

It's an incredibly misleading moniker for this port at best and is the result of misinformation regarding it.

But no seriously, good informative vid. GMan clearly has a lot of passion for old-school FPS, but he really could do more research about 'em sometimes. Also, I love the Butthead skin that one guy in those multiplayer matches was rocking.

Edit: Just to clarify, I do enjoy Gman's vids, they're entertaining for the most part (some of the running jokes are zzz) and I don't want to shit on the dude or all the time and effort he puts into his work. I appreciate it and a lot of other people do too. He just needs to do more research.

Probably a new video in where he apologize for not giving the right information, and so a lot of people will like it more, and become the youtuber who know to admit when he is wrong.
And so, we are just giving him help on getting money from our replies.

Or not, he will do a new one, without apologize.
