Gokuma Posted September 21, 2020 As if 2020 wasn't enough of an astounding pile of trans-dimensional space-crack, in 2021 we may actually see John Romero and John Carmack both working on Doom stuff again! Microsoft should teach Zenimax and Zenimax Legal to heel and make them apologize to John Carmack. Make them bow down, grovel, and really kiss his ass if they want to keep their jobs. Not happy about Bill Gates owning Doom in addition to his scummy 500,000 shares of Monsanto though. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post

No, not that I don't think there will be another one, I just don't believe that the third game will be in the series of NuDOOM. I think that they will release the DLC, then move onto another project. Then, in like 4 years, somebody is going to be like, "Omigod! Remember this game?! We should make another!" Then, there will be a whole new game, without the arena battles, and the exploration back, like the original games. I don't even think it would have happened with or without xBox's buy. It just felt like they were kind of ending it. Maybe they'll release something like Final DOOM, but that would be it. I would like a Mother Demon battle, though. Lol And then Master Chief is Doomguy from a distant future... or in in this convulted multiverse, his own son! On a serious note, i find this refreshing. Yes, it could be worse! Do you imagine if they were bought by Square-Enix? Ha! Doomguy will be doing sailor moon dances and changing his outfit everytime he change weapons, cinematic non skipable, and his face would transform into a affeminate supermodel with a really strange haircut, and in his past life before being a marine he was a bouncer on a bar and Daisy was a waitress there but his memories were put on a rabitt after his handsome brother wanted to use her as the core of doomguy's bfg because he is mad after knowing that his mother is the Mother Demon... and his father Ricky Martin! ... Maybe it could be a good idea that Square-Enix had bought it. That game looks awesome! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gokuma Posted September 21, 2020 I thought he already does Sailor Moon dances in Doom 2016's multiplayer. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Skeletonpatch Posted September 21, 2020 I'm... at a loss for words. I personally do not know how to feel about this. I've felt for a while that Bethesda Game Studios had lost its touch after Skyrim, but I never felt that Bethesda Softworks was all that bad as a publisher. As someone who loves quality games, I'm optimistic. As someone who favours PlayStation, I'm kinda terrified. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Dragonfly Posted September 21, 2020 Genuinely surprised so many people are donning their tin foil hats and face-smashing the panic button over this. What is going to really be different to you as the consumer? Plausible outcomes from this aquisition: - You can get these games for much cheaper via the game pass now - The games may have larger financial backing - Some old and loved games may see future installations now that licensing may not be as much of an issue (Looking at all the prayers for fallout new vegas on twitter here) - etc. What actual negatives are there aside from bullshit "I don't like thing" responses? That means I'm ignoring crap like unfounded hatred for 'ol Billy G 'cause that was the cool thing to hate in 2001, or people who despise anything with more money than oneself. Arguments I've seen: Oh noes, megacorps r bad id Software were already under the grip of a so called "megacorporation", now that's owned by a bigger one, big whoop. They better not make doomguy befriend masterchief I personally don't like halo a great deal but I also wouldn't be offended like some people appear to be about the concept of a "Doom Chief" crossover game... Ugh they're just gonna make everything xbox exclusive No, they won't, this has reportedly been confirmed They better not 'consolise' my games, bleugh ...More than they already have with _extra_ features such as weapon wheels? Practically impossible. Anyone who can say with a straight face that the existence of consoles made Doom '16 / Eternal worse games is probably talking through their arse anyways. What else? 'cause I genuinely can't think of a single thing that will actually affect id Software and their games negatively. So far I've not seen a convincing reason to be upset about this, just the usual internet mob-mentality and a bunch of people screaming "I don't like thing", as usual. Full disclosure - This thread so far has probably been one of the most optimistic toned things I've read on this subject, which is somewhat refreshing. 32 Quote Share this post Link to post

M_W Posted September 21, 2020 For once, I actually hope that the company that acquired the publisher doesn't let the company they acquired keep control, because Zenimax is fucking awful, and MS has been relatively inoffensive as far as publishing is concerned. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gokuma Posted September 21, 2020 Well out of principle, I see the biggest downside is Bill Gates owning a beloved series while he also owns 500,000 shares of a company that poisons practically everything we eat and is using his clout to force Monsanto back into countries that kicked them out. I remember when cancer patients weren't a freaking marketing demographic. Recently I noticed that childhood cancer is now a marketing demographic as I'm hearing commercials for treatment (on news radio, not in my head). You can thank Monsanto and their RoundUp and Glyphosate a good deal for that, especially since so many parents have their kids munching on Cheerios they think are healthy but contain the most shockingly high levels of Glyphosate of all processed food products tested so far. Poetic justice would be Bill Gates having to suck down tablespoons or whatever dosage of RoundUp/Glyphosate that is not immediately lethal but develops terminal cancer over time. It's only fitting for poisoning untold numbers of people and children so. Oops, that's quite a downer isn't it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

It would honestly be pretty hilarious if id decided to announce something like this as an April Fools joke. I'm sure they won't because they'd rather avoid the backlash, however temporary it might be. But it would funny. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

Doomkid Posted September 21, 2020 (edited) I agree with most of what Dragonfly says, but we shouldn’t take the “megacorps r evil” thing as a meme. They literally are the snake-headed, worm-toothed spawns of Satan that us foil-donning types claim them to be. It’s not just because they have more money than me - frankly I’m content with the simple life. It’s just a statement of fact in response to the pages of verifiable evil that all megacorps partake in. After Bauul giving me a dose of perspective, I’ve decided evil is less likely to be the culprit. Stupidity or incompetence are much more likely to blame! When it comes specifically to the implications of this on a gaming level then yeah, I disagree with all the pearl clutching, but let’s just all remember that to get above a certain value/size, evil is a requirement, not just an assumption. They’ll probably let you have your games still while they abuse 3rd world labour and lax child slavery laws to sink their vile tendrils even deeper into the Earth’s crust, though. At least we get to be distracted while all this is going down! EDIT: I don't want the apparent negativity of this comment to lead people to assume things, I'm actually elated to hear Carmack say this might be a foot in the door to at least having some involvement with his old IPs again. That would be one fantastic thing to come out of all this! Edited September 22, 2020 by Doomkid 8 Quote Share this post Link to post

Hypnotik Posted September 22, 2020 Last thing I was expecting to see, was this. I laughed so hard when all someone said on a facebook post about it was "It's the nail in the coffin." LMAO found that hilarious. Microsoft, if you read this, please...do not fuck this up! Doom, Quake, Elder scrolls, Fallout, these are all awesome games that have contributed to so many fond memories for alot of people, including myself. (no shit sherlock) But yeah, who knows what to expect? This will be interesting. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Bauul Posted September 22, 2020 (edited) 54 minutes ago, Doomkid said: They literally are the snake-headed, worm-toothed spawns of Satan that us foil-donning types claim them to be. As someone who worked for a megacorp (before we were sold to a venture capital firm) and has worked with behemoths like Microsoft and Google for years, I find this POV tends to come from people who have never had anything to do with big companies other than buy their products or services. The reality is a company isn't this giant hive-mind single entity, it doesn't do anything by itself. It's the sum of the people who work there. And I don't just mean the senior executives, I mean everybody. If you truly believe that all large corporations are worm-toothed spawns of Satan, then you must also believe that the millions of people who work for them (and actually make the decisions for the company) are also worm-toothed spawns of Satan. Who, in my experience, are not. Now, are there certain people who work for said companies who are like that? Yep, absolutely. But I've also worked with tiny companies run by evil people, not-for-profits run by evil people, governments run by evil people etc. etc. There are evil people everywhere, and big corporations aren't inherently any worse than any other organization. In fact I've seen more terrible people doing terrible things in small companies (where they have fewer people to answer to) than large corporations. I've heard awful, first-hand accounts of sexual assault, physical assault, pedophilic pornography, extortion, fraud, illegal activities left and right, and precisely all of them have come from small, start-up or third-sector organizations. Big corporations often seem like either faceless entities, or big-personality famous executives. But the reality is behind both of those are thousands of people just trying to do a good job, and it's those people who are responsible for 95% of all decisions a company makes. I'm honestly surprised by that because the last time I played it had been stagnating with no new content for nearly a year, all being run by SyncError with no support from the rest of id. Also, i was waiting in 30 minute queues to get into matches that ended up being mostly bots. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DooM Bear Posted September 22, 2020 Yays!!! This is really awesome :-) Will have to look into what happens to Zenimax shares (I.e. do they get “traded in” for Microsoft shares etc.) and what happens to their board but am optimistic that this could be the change in strategic direction BGS need! :-) In other words, hopefully this means BGS might go back to making profit by developing cool games that people want to buy rather than developing games solely to try and make a profit *cough* fallout 76 *cough* 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
