How do I change doom guy's face in the HUD?

It's a simple question, but that's because I myself am more on the "retarded" side of "dumb", so forgive me for asking.

 

Also, is this possible without making a dehacked? I think it should, but as stated, all I know is that I don't know anything.

Specifically, the easiest way to do this will be to open up Doom/Doom2.wad in Slade, select all the status bar faces - 42 in total, export them as PNGs, edit accordingly, then re-import them back into your own wad, being sure to covert them back to "doom graphics format" after you import them (Slade makes this easy do to in a couple clicks)
