Cammy Posted October 9, 2020 This is my first post here and I understand it's at least somewhat audacious to come out of the woodwork swinging for a giant solo project like this, but I really need something to do and I think this could be fun. So hi, I'm Cammy. I've been diddling and doodling with computer music for the better part of 10 years now. I've never really considered myself a potential career musician, but it's still something I enjoy a lot, and if I've spent 10 years doing this stuff I figure I might as well apply myself and put out a concrete enough work to make it feel like that time has been worth something. Excuse me for the cliche, but check out my SoundCloud for examples of my original work. It wasn't that long ago that I found out about the Plutonia MIDI Pack project, which replaced Plutonia's recycled soundtrack with an awesome original one. I've been clicking away in my spare time at vaguely Doom-style songs and I'm thinking I might try to give Final Doom's other half a similar treatment. Of course, unlike Plutonia, TNT already has a decent number of original soundtracks to its name, and I don't want to mess with those. Instead, this would be me writing original songs for the 18 TNT maps that reuse music either from Doom II or from earlier in the WAD, those being maps 3, 9, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18, 19, 21, 23 through 30, and 32. There are a couple hang-ups though, chiefly in that A) I am a complete moron when it comes to anything that involves code so once this is done I wouldn't have a clue how to get it working as a downloadable mod, and B) I don't have experience working with sequencers that can actually export as MIDIs because Apple sucks. The latter of those I could fix pretty easily though. I have access to a PC and I could download a sequencer on it; I've theorycrafted a method to convert songs from their native GarageBand (yes, I am just the right blend of stubborn, lazy, and broke to have actually used GarageBand for a decade) into a form a better sequencer could read and export as MIDI. Said method would be absurdly protracted and frustrating but I've done more tedious things in the past. I checked around wikis and the forum and as far as I can tell, this surprisingly may not be something anyone's tried to do before. I still have a certain suspicion I'm not the first person to throw my hat into this ring though, so please let me know if this is old news and I'll drop it. Assuming it isn't, is this something that people would be interested in? 8 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted October 9, 2020 It has indeed not been done yet so it's certainly a good idea, but perhaps not the best timing -- I'd suggest waiting until the two currently-ongoing MIDI pack projects are over, so that they don't compete with each other for our community's musicians' attention. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
P41R47 Posted October 9, 2020 (edited) I would love to hear your tunes as i love TNT. The only other midi pack for TNT out there don't make it justice adequately as its music from other indie game. So go ahead, you have all my support Cammy! ;) If you want feedback for your compositions, i would gladly listen them :) And this one is awesome! Feels like an excellent boss map music! https://m.soundcloud.com/user-603732503/a-figure-standing-tall Edited October 9, 2020 by P41R47 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Pirx Posted October 9, 2020 excellent idea and i guess most players are tired of hearing the same old tunes. similarly to its maps, tnt has some great tracks, some are ok, and some asking for idmus, so i'd welcome any project to create some original music. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted October 9, 2020 So long as you don't mind it stretching out for a while considering the other 2 MIDI projects happening, I think it's a great idea overall. If it's still going on 5-6 monhts from now (or whenever we have all slots for the "midtwid for doom 2") I'll be happy to at least try to produce a song for it! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
NiGHTMARE Posted October 9, 2020 My interpretation is that the OP is planning to make all the midis themselves, although I could be wrong :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Cammy Posted October 9, 2020 @Gez Thank you for bringing those to my attention! I'll keep this on the down low until those two come to pass – I'm thinking I might even sign up to participate in them as a primer. I really appreciate the support from the rest of you too! My original plan was to fill this out on my own, but I'd be happy to open the doors to collaboration – in that case I'd cede leadership of the project to someone of a more significant standing in the community. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Robo_Cola Posted October 10, 2020 It's funny you bring this project up OP, for @Doomkid 's Doom II midi project I've been making some tracks recently but a few of them I thought would fit better in a evilution midi pack. So I may have some material for this! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Diabolución Posted December 11, 2020 I would replace every track (feasible for a community project, rather than a solo project), honestly. I do not know how to explain it well because my limited English writing skills are my limited English writing skills, but mixing brand-new and polished songs with these antediluvian and buggy ones seems weird and inconsistent in my view. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ChopBlock223 Posted December 12, 2020 My answer is a resounding YES. I love TNT (in spite of its flaws it has many strong sides too), and new music made to fit with its original tracks would be absolutely tubular. I always thought TNT's music was excellent, so I always wanted more. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Sotenga Posted February 22, 2021 (edited) I was actually going to post a thread asking if anyone would want to undertake this exact endeavor, but since I found this one from two months back, I want to bump and say that I highly approve of this idea and I want an excuse to replay TNT again. I'd also like to ask what progress has been made on this project if it's been started yet. I'm not sure if the other MIDI projects have been finished yet, but when they're done, I'd love to see this one realized! I do have one suggestion, though: Keep "Into the Beast's Belly" for either Mount Pain or Last Call, and replace its first occurrence in Metal, because I tend to associate that track with MP or LC more. Totally up to you, though, as I recognize it's a bit of a short track before it loops and MP is especially long. Do what you want, though!
