Clippy Posted October 11, 2020 Try it here: http://www.levelgame.net/doom/tech.wad Probably works best on Gzdoom or any of it's predecessors All difficulty settings implemented + multiplayer and deathmatch No jumping or crouching but if people try it I think I blocked them Freelook: Your choice buddeh Commercial: Here's a screenshot but watch the video if you want more SPECIAL THANKS: @Biodegradable who inspired me to make a techbase map ... well I tried. And also for encouraging me to make something smaller for a change he picked the music Arqueto - my Sherdog buddy who made the title screen and inspiration for map name / weapon choices Good times I hope you like it It's hopefully short and sweet. I mean I can beat it in 5 mins but I made it eh That link again is rh: http://www.levelgame.net/doom/tech.wad 23 Quote Share this post Link to post

I swear, the mapping legends could learn a thing or two about how you shake up the formula. It's a challenge, but you're also measured in your cruelty as usual. I had a blast. ElPadrecitoCholo Posted October 11, 2020 Fried Chicken 87: Ultra-Violence mode || GZDoom || Vanilla+ Status: *Deaths: 1 (Killed by Archvile) *Saves: none As usual, when Clippy uploads a new map, I will always be present to test it, no matter how much time passes, I will be aware of each creation that he makes, and as today was the case, I started to play what was this new map, to see what good it was, and indeed, it brought certain things that made it somewhat complicated, to begin with, the beginning is somewhat hard, since you really depend on the chainsaw to survive, secondly, there are areas that really are annoyed by the fact that you have to attack using only the chainsaw, and that is really screwed, like coming and killing several Cacodemons with only that weapon, another thing is that there are certain mechanisms throughout the map that create a lot of confusion to the time to be playing, like the fact of being looking for how to get to a key or a secret without breaking your head a lot, as I had already killed a good part of the demons at the beginning, I simply started to investigate what these were for switch, I managed to find 4 secrets at the end, but the fifth was difficult for me, in short, after going around, going up and down from one side to the other, and playing with certain switches, I ended up quickly finding the keys, and then go to a place that said "Exit" where the Hell Knight had been crushed with a trap, when I fell, I ran into the ugly, an Archvile blocking the way, at first it was not so complicated because there were places to hide, it the bad news came when I remembered that I had only the chainsaw as a weapon, and another was when I saw that there were Imps everywhere, which, being blocking me at every step, and not being able to hide in time to avoid the Archvile, I couldn't do it. which led me to a really ugly death, after doing everything again until I got to the Archvile again, this time I decided to hide in those thin pillars that were there, and boy did it work, managing to kill the Archvile without many Imps attacking me, although also I suffered damage because of that bastard, besides that in that same area, I found a switch that should be triggered, or it will then show an "elevator" in which to go up and pick up the Mega Sphere that was there, recovering again, when I went to the portal, when I returned to the beginning, a new platform had risen, Cacodemons arrived and they were attacking me, I put them in a room so that they would no longer hinder me, then I went up, grabbed the invincibility, killed the Baron of hell with the chainsaw, then I went down to go through the Cacodemons, and in that, a strange entrance that I had not seen before had been found there, I decided to walk all that way in red, avoiding the crushing pillars, and heavens, the weapons that I saw before when I was going back and forth, I had them in front of me, I went through them all, I got the Super Shotgun, annihilated the excess Cacodemons, and finally I went straight to the exit with the weapons and the BFG in my hands. To sum it all up, it was a really confusing map, dude, since there were things that I had a hard time understanding them, if it weren't for I spent a long time doing tests in various parts before I left with the Archvile, but anyway, despite How tedious this was for me, it was very entertaining what you did at the end of the day, very good work on this wad, Clippy, it was not as much to my liking as I expected, but it was entertaining in the end, it was quite a pleasure to have tested / played the wad you made, really interesting, mate 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
danidf96 Posted October 11, 2020 This was....wow. I have never in my entire life finished a level with just the chainsaw, and it was quite the experience. The fight with the archvile was definetly the best part, running around the room avoiding the fire pillars and trying to flip the switches was very thrilling. Great job as usual Clippy. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Soulless Posted October 11, 2020 (edited) Nice little map buddy, heres my 2nd run: 1st was just too bad haha, died trying to get that BFG... For a simple and small map the layout is pretty cool. I was surprised by the secret count, only 5, or maybe more just untagged, knowing you, anything is possible. Keep throwing those tasty maps Clippy! So... Spoiler I know for a fact those little doors between weapons can be opened, yeah I nocliped that, are those weapons just a tease?!?! You madman... Clippy Posted October 11, 2020 Thank you everyone for the kind words and comments / videos - keep em coming! @Biodegradable Thank you for playing my map, as always your vids are a blast. This prolly didn't work out as a tech map but I still had fun making it. Nice double chainsaw action! And I really like that music you picked. My wife fell asleep on the couch and it gave her nightmares. But I wonder why you couldn't open some of those keyed doors? I reprogramed them to be better tagged let me know if still an issue @ElPadrecitoCholo Thank you for the professional looking review as always, it means a lot you taking time to type out lengthy commentary of mappers projects on here. Your testing is helpful glad you didn't seem to find any bugs. I never considered dancing around those animated thin pillars to combat the archie, will have to try that. The imps in the room are deaf so will leave you alone unless you start running around. Also good job grabbing the weapons, you appear to be the only one to do so thus far. @danidf96 Glad you had fun, I wasn't sure how this concept would be received. I know I personally have fun playing it, it's an unexpected challenge to be in. My buddy Arqueto doesn't really play Doom but wanted to see a chainsaw only map. Great inspiration for this map. I think that titlepic he made is kickass too @Soulless Hey there always love your fast and skilled UV max runs. I did want to torture the player by letting them see weapons they couldn't get. But between us they can but only at the end of the level via special technique. Some day I'll reveal all the map secrets/non secrets. Also in Deathmatch those doors help the players access them. Don't think anyone ever uses deathmatch or multiplayer in my maps but I won't feel like it's a complete map without em, so they all have em! As for only 5 secrets, I don't think there's anything else I could give the player in such a small map. I wanted for the first time in my life try to keep it small. Also I fixed the ledge that Imp got stuck on, that's why playtesting videos are pivotal to mappers! Thanks again 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Salmon Posted October 11, 2020 Honestly this is pretty fantastic. I know some people dislike the chainsaw since berserk is technically more useful but the chainsaw can be so entertaining. Really solid layout, creative visuals, and a fun concept. The map has a really clever sense of progression packed into such a small space. I only got 3/5 secrets, sadly. I really couldn't figure out what was going on with the fried chicken panel and the computer thing it opened in the wall behind it... Maybe I'll try again later. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

plums Posted October 11, 2020 Hey Clippy, the other day I was thinking I should try out some of your maps, so I gave this one a shot. Pretty good! You made good use of the chainsaw while trolling the player with other weapons (I did get them after everything was dead), and there's a nonlinear puzzle-type kind of progression that I liked and thought worked well with the smaller layout. Making the BFG *look* like you could get it with an AV jump while it was actually blocked off was a dick move, though :p (I assume this is meant to be played with GZDoom defaults? Normally I have "use Doom code for hitscan checks" on, since I think it makes the chainsaw/fists too strong normally, but it seems like this was meant to be played with it off.) Visually I found the map a bit cluttered; the theme seemed to be mainly "use all the tech/star textures everywhere" without a great deal of consistency. Some people just like using lots of textures, so maybe that's just your style, but if it wasn't an intentional stylistic choice I'd recommend trying some more focused visuals for a next map? Some possible bugs: * You didn't disable jump/crouch. Add these lines to the MAPINFO block NoJump NoCrouch * The crushers that kill the chaingunners also make the sectors beside them crush, which is why you get that rapid moving-sector sound. Maybe this was deliberate, but I found it got pretty cacophonous, especially since you already had the chainsaw buzzing most of the time. Anyhow, fun map overall, nice job. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Clippy Posted October 11, 2020 @plums Glad you decided to give one of my maps a whirl. This was by far my shortest map but seems to be best received. Yeah I always do pricky things in my maps and blocking the player from the BFG was just that. I was hoping someone would try to get blasted by an archie to have it backfire! I hope my tricks and traps are more amusing than annoying. I never changed the Gzdoom defaults for what you describe, a setting I don't even know about, so I would say yes - it's meant for default.. As for texturing that has always been my weakness, I'm more about designs and functionality and trying to use every inch of editing space and making the map flow into itself in interesting ways I wanted each of the four hallways around the square to look unique as well to prevent player confusion, er even more so. I think I built the map so Jumpin/crouching won't break progression, so I didn't feel the need to disable it, I would love to be proved wrong tho. As for the crushing error, I saw the error and somehow liked it, it seemed like a unique event with that noise so I kept it. Thanks for the feedback I am glad you liked it :) @BucketHoodie Welcome to recording play-throughs of random Doom 2 maps and putting them on Youtube. My fave pastime! Your video did flash yellow weirdly when picking up items and red for pain. It's always interesting and fun s to watch everyone play differently to get a feel of all the aspects of what playing my map is like. I felt bad for you but also happy because some things I hoped would mess with ppl happened to you. The exit baron killing you when you shot at the blue armour switch was great. Giving the Baron a window was a last minute idea I'm glad worked. Also not being able to get that crate room megasphere because you ran out of bullets. Glad to see some of my traps worked :P - good times thanks again for vid! @TheMagicMushroomMan Yes big blue hammers should only be used at a circus or in a Bugs Bunny cartoon :P But agreed, great detailed review which is nice for map makers :) 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

I believe its suposed to flash yellow ehn you do pick up items in any sourceport but it was fucked. I also loved the sadism of the map. Everything else I found funny, but I thought that one was a bit much just because I wasn't sure whether it was actually blocked off, or I was just failing the AV jump, until I looked at the map in an editor after beating it. A good compromise would have been to have a small ledge around the box the player could actually get onto, while still having the rest of the box blocked off. Not worth changing the map over but something to think about for the future. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Horus Posted October 11, 2020 Video playthrough below. Nice to see a smaller map from you, and an interesting niche to be chainsaw-dominant, not many maps have that. I got all secrets and items except I cheated to get one of them which was a shootswitch for which I ran out of ammo. Fun map, only real complaint was that it felt a bit lazy to have the default STARTAN2 texture plastered all around the opening area. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Hahahaha, I completely understood that reference, well no partner, this time I did not prefer to use the "Combined Arms: Gaiden", being a Clippy map, the grace of the difficulty would be lost, so nothing, better to use the classic to use the powerful, Do not you believe it @TheMagicMushroomMan?,hehe 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
