Smite of Disrespect Posted October 14, 2020 (edited) What soundfont did Jimmy use to compose the Sigil MIDIs? Sorry to create a thread for this but I've spent some time searching and I haven't found an answer. I considered PMing Jimmy but that seemed even less appropriate than starting a thread. Also, post your favorite soundfont/wad combos. On Valiant's moddb page, it reads: > grab Arachnoid soundfont for maximum midi experience. can be mounted with VirtualMIDISynth though I'm not sure if those are skillsaw's words or not. From BTSX_e1.txt: > using a Roland SoundCanvas soundfont can provide great results but it doesn't specify which. I know there's at least SC-55, SC-88, and SC-D70 (I haven't found an SC-D70 soundfont yet) I personally use the Mysung Kite soundfont for virtually everything. There are only a few exceptions I've found so far: Going Down sounds vastly superior with PrBoom's default sound set up (FluidSynth MIDI player and the default soundfont), and Valiant sounds better with Arachno. Bear in mind my experience is very limited; I haven't even played BTSX yet for example. For the original Doom/Doom2/Duke Nukem MIDIs I use the digital music packs: http://sc55.duke4.net/games.php#doom Reveal hidden contents For GZDoom you load the .zip files as if they were any other mod. For Chocolate/Crispy, unzip the files anywhere (for example D:\Games\Doom\Music-Packs) then edit your chocolate- and/or crispy-doom.cfg file to look for the music packs in that directory (for example: music_pack_path "D:\games\doom\music-packs") (Edit: I failed to mention, they are working on an SC-55 music pack for Jimmy's Duke It Out In DC MIDIs, as well as one for the Plutonia MIDI community project) Also there is a promising project that does the same thing as above but with the SC-D70 soundfont: http://sc-d70.retrohost.net/musicpacks.html They are actually currently working on creating a music pack for Jimmy's Sigil MIDIs (check the progress tab)! They created a music pack for the Plutonia MIDI community project (plutmidi.wad) as well! I think the SC-55 music packs for Doom and Duke Nukem sound way better than the SC-D70 versions, but there is no SC-55 music pack for plutmidi.wad, so by default SC-D70 wins; it sound GREAT, by the way, better than any MIDI player soundfont I've tried so far. But I don't know how to get this music pack to work in Chocolate/Crispy :( I can load the .zip as a mod in GZDoom just fine, but I'd rather not use GZDoom to play a vanilla IWAD, even with the sweet music, so for plutmidi.wad I still just use VirtualMIDISynth. Reveal hidden contents >What is VirtualMIDISynth? It seems appropriate to link these threads here: If anyone knows how to get the plutmidi.wad SC-D70 music packs to work in Chocolate/Crispy, help would be much appreciated Edited October 14, 2020 by RonnieColeman 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted October 14, 2020 (edited) I almost guarantee Jimmy composes using this sound: https://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts/724/RLNDGM.SF2_for_SoundFont-Midi-Player-Android.zip This is basically the exact soundfont Windows uses, just in SF2 format rather than DLS format. An automatic conversion between formats is sloppy as well, this soundfont is the cleaned up and properly balanced version. Musyng Kite is a cool one, I also really like SGMGuitarPlusBass (or whatever the exact filename is), GM2 Map Soundfont, and I'm also really partial to using custom drum soundfonts layered over each of them. My favorite one of all time probably has to be the basic Roland GM one though, the one linked above, due to familiarity probably more than anything else but also the fact that most GM MIDIs were likely composed using it. Even though it has a very "toy" sound to it, everything from classical to dance to rock sounds well balanced assuming the MIDI was made well, whereas some custom soundfonts have weird unaccounted for side effects. I can't remember who said this but it was compared to using HD texture packs, and I think that's an excellent comparison. Great thread! EDIT: I should also link these enormous soundfont collections: https://musical-artifacts.com/ https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1TbLOvr6GwqrxteWH8RD7Z7Q7t8q-vsIe https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1EI2R4QMsJI5Vzemps8wz3rq97YKxja5l https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1492myFXb_4aG1HsQ4aNA4DcL2SUNVvYL Edited October 14, 2020 by Doomkid 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

It sounds flatter than the 1+ gigabyte soundfonts I've tried like Mysung Kite or Orpheus but the balance of the instruments is much better 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
P41R47 Posted October 14, 2020 UltimateSegaGenesis soundfont is really cool! Also yes, i remember Xaser and Jimmy saying in another thread that they compose their midi with the windows basic one, as is the one most people have access to. I can't find the thread, but i take mental note of that because i thought it was interest. I think it was a thread about Square... but can't remind it properly :/ 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
dmslr Posted October 14, 2020 (edited) Xaser: Quote A disclaimer of sorts: I can't technically officially speak for everyone (and if I'm wrong about any of y'all, please chime in), but those of us who write .mid music for Doom wads (Jimmy, stewboy, Eris Falling, Esselfortium, and myself, to name a few) specifically target SC-55 voices (the janky-but-lovable default Windows one being the de facto standard, for better or worse). Smite of Disrespect Posted October 14, 2020 (edited) ty I did discover that thread but I failed to read the whole thing (or the whole first page even) because I'm lazy Edited October 14, 2020 by RonnieColeman 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
