smeghammer Posted October 15, 2020 (edited) Hi all, I've just started back at work part time, and I found myself missing my daily dose of mapping. Certainly, having a job to actually go back to is a huge thing (even though at reduced hours), but over the last 6 months or so of furlough, I have found mapping helped me to stay sane and I definitely found I missed doing it - even for a few days. It's a bit difficult in the evening 'cos that's when we put the kids to bed and then crash in front of the TV... What do you all feel if you are in a similar situation? Phobus Posted October 15, 2020 My best working days are the ones where there's not much to do and I'm working from home, as then I can indulge in my hobbies. As soon as I get busy, I'm then relying on free time in the evenings and the weekends, and there always seems to be something else that needs doing, or some show on Netflix that my girlfriend and I are interested in... Then the mapping falls by the wayside and, before you know it, I've not touched something I was quite excited about working on for months at a time. Throw in an ever-increasing collection of games (padded out with endless freebies) vying for my attention, and the fact that I occasionally actually play WADs that other people have made and time is just too short. As I derive no value from paid employment past the income, if there were an alternative (like some sort of Universal Basic Income paid out of a tax on the major companies that we spend most of our money on), I'd seriously struggle to see the point in work. I suppose the flipside is that, if I have spent the day toiling away over a hot spreadsheet or being bombarded with emails and Teams calls, I then view mapping as additional work, and it also falls by the wayside. So yes, a lot of life is very much "job vs. mapping" for me. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Deadwing Posted October 16, 2020 It's not easy indeed, if I have like 5 hours to map in the whole week that's already a lot for me. It sucks because I have very little time to play other people wads (I have to choose between one or other) It's probably even more harder for people with kids. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
DNSKILL5 Posted October 16, 2020 Make a schedule for making maps that gives you time to do everything else you need to do after work. What I used to do, is I would split my days like a workout routine. So, on certain days I’d be making wolfenstein 3d maps, on other days it would be doom, etc. this way I could give time for these hobbies without losing time for anything else was by splitting up my activities through the week. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
AinuTheTaken Posted October 16, 2020 Just imagine that the money from your job is a Green Key and that it will take you where you want to go. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
