Egg Boy Posted October 25, 2020 (edited) Alright, thanks for all the feedback guys! I'm pushing a new version with a few subtle tweaks. -Map02 and Map03 now both have medikits at the end of the map to help all you lovely continuous players who made it hard on yourselves by not playing pistol start. -Added a green armor to map03's now infamous battle as per @GarrettChan's suggestion. -Made the death exit work consistently (thank you @tourniquet). -Added an inescapable "Thank You for Playing" map so that you don't get booted out into Doom 2. -Added a dehacked, making the in-automap map names accurate. -Added 3 new demos, 2 of me trying to speedrun the first 2 maps (it does not end well) and 1 of the aforementioned "Thank You for Playing" map. The new version is accessible via the link in the OP, thank you all for playing, I hope to make this the last version (unless any HUGE game-breaking bugs are found) Edited October 25, 2020 by Egg Boy 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
head_cannon Posted October 25, 2020 I made some FDAs of your maps in Crispy Doom; the whole WAD seems quite polished and I look forward to going back later with saves to complete it. The "frozen temple" aesthetic looked great, appearing cohesive without being monotonous & disorienting, and the new title & intermission screens looked good too. The midi choices are also top-notch; everything is pleasing enough to the senses to make a good first impression, inviting the player in to subject themselves to these brutal fights & fiendish traps. As "a linear series of setpieces"-style maps go, these ones deliver the thrills as they unfold & open up, but I must admit that this kind of highly-choreographed gameplay is not my favorite style. It's obvious that a lot of thought has been put into how much ammo the player has for each moment of the level, and that tightly-controlled resource balance extends to the health packs. They're few & far between, just like they were in Blood Foundry. A valid choice for this kind of short, punchy map format, but I missed the familiar comfort of being able to go scrounging for leftover supplies. hc_cf_fdas.zip Map01 - I'm always a fan of a setup where you begin outside & under fire, and have to storm the castle to get any shelter. I missed the starting supply of 28 shells up on its raised dais outside, but still managed to muddle through the initial moments of the map. The second indoor section, however, saw me go down in a hail of bullets as I underestimated how many chaingunners were left and charged forward to gun down the survivors too quickly. Map02 - This one I actually finished! I was kicking myself after the SuperShotgun room: I had been suspicious of what the consequences would be of taking the weapon from its altar, and checked around the rest of the room first. The secret teleporter I discovered turned out to actually be the critical path, and there was no backtracking to that treasure room. Despite the accidental weapon skip, I survived the Arch-Vile's ambush, and I have to give props for the way that my attempted escape just brought me face-to-face with the other Arch-Vile. That was a good scare. Map03 - By some miracle, I survived that killer gauntlet of Barrels, Revenants, & Shotgunners long enough to start to get a foothold, get overconfident, and rocket a Revenant that was too close. Rather embarrassing. In maps with such a pronounced resource scarcity, hitting the player with sudden hitscanners is a tough thing to balance. The chaingunners at the start were obviously meant to take a bite out of your starting (full) health total, and weren't as aggravating as Map01's crowds of soldiers, but the mass teleport ran into a pet peeve of mine about that encounter format: the way that the flow of monsters can appear to cease, only to spit out some more after a few seconds when you think it's over and have looked away. The shotgunner hiding behind the first crate was a pretty good scare, and when I wondered if that trick was going to be repeated with the second crate, my attack turned into a moment of panicked backpedaling. It's a minor thing, but I thought it was an excellent gag. After pressing the switch at the end of the crate room, I should have been suspicious at what exactly the lowering bars were trying to delay, but instead I paused to look through them and found myself unexpectedly on fire. I guess spending the time & ammo to safely put down the sniper monsters was a mistake: it was my very last shell that killed the Arch-Vile. That was damn close. Map04 - I assumed the opening was going to be a "stay quiet as long as possible" kind of puzzle, and was reluctant to finally start proactively clearing Imps out of my way. Once I had a run actually get started, I was able to pause to take in the scene, and watch the distant Cyberdemon kill a couple of monsters. The canals of the castle grounds looked great, and the setup with two gangs of monsters coming at you from opposite ends of the waterway was pretty cool. Then I hopped down a pit and was smothered by a crush of Pinkies & Revenants. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
