This has been a good year for gaming, but it is time to choose.

Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed to the 10th of December, the same date the Game Awards of this year take place (online), so I don't think it counts for the award, sadly.

Definitely Doom Eternal. Usually modern shooters don't hold my interest for as long so they don't often get my pick, but I like Eternal the more I play.

I want more, gimme DLC #2

There's only 1 choice. All of the others are either junky remakes or reboots or just lame. Half Life is decent.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

Doom Eternal would have been a likely candidate if I had a computer capable of running it in the first place.

For me, my top 5 are:

1. Ori and the Will of the Wisps (easily top 20 all time for me)

2. Ghost of Tsushima

3. Doom Eternal

4. Final Fantasy VII Remake

5. Control Ultimate Edition (I know it's really a 2019 title)

Haven't played Half-Life: Alyx, and I *loathed* The Last of Us: Part II (but maybe not for the reasons you think). I also want to give a shout out to Black Mesa for getting a sort of 'real' release.

If Cyberpunk 2077 even half lives up to the hype, though...

Resident Evil 3 Remake or Ghost of Tsushima, mostly because I haven't played Cyberpunk, Valhalla, Legion, etc etc yet.

I'd also throw in Huntdown, a fast paved side scroller, as my GOTY.

Its been a fairly light year honestly, what with Covid and most of the games releasing in November/December.

@wheresthebeef I've been wanting to play Huntdown! I don't think it's on Steam yet. What specifically makes it so good in your opinion? There are a loootttttt of side scrolling platformers out there, and I find the quality is fairly mixed. Some are *incredible* but others are pretty so-so.

The gameplay and controls are pretty tight. I love having so much direct control.

The setting is great and is inspired by things like The Warriors and 80s and 90s movies. There's also a cyberpunk-style backdrop and some of the art is pretty damn good.

Some of it is pretty challenging, bordering on cheap at times, and each level has a boss (there's around 20 levels IIRC) once you recognize the patterns though it isn't too much of an issue.

The game is so fast paced and feels like an arcade game, so much so they are actually making an arcade cabinet for the game.

I just wish there was more of it, whether its new levels, characters, or new modes that alter the already existing levels.

Are different editions of games still eligible for different year awards?

Yakuza Like a Dragon looks pretty sweet but it's yet to get an international release.

Probably not, but... close enough! I've always considered The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine to be one of the best games of 2016, since it came out in 2016 and was a whole new world.

It's all fairly arbitrary, to be fair. In many ways Cyberpunk 2077 will be a 2021 title since I'm sure it'll get major patches next year, plus the two DLCs.

My other two picks besides Control, CP2077 and Yakuza Like a Dragon would have been Ghostrunner and Amnesia: Rebirth, but these two are not exactly mind blowing games. and they seem to have slipped under everyone's radar.... yeah not a lot to choose from this year for me.

My god... it’s like an even more janky Postal 2! I love it!

you should play it :) it's over at indieDB, and it's the best fps creator game of all time in my opinion

That would be my choice too, but it came out in 2018 so can't really count.

It does rather highlight the downside of award recognitions like this for smaller releases when a game might not hit its stride until two years after it came out.

dunno, gut feeling? If you actually read the comments I was saying that would have been one of them for me if it didn't get delayed to after the game awards, but it's moved to 2021 now.

I've played three games that are new out this year, I believe. Doom Eternal, Fall Guys Ultimate Knockout and Serious Sam 4. Doom Eternal takes the crown for me, with SS4 in a close second place. Fall Guys would be my girlfriend's choice for GOTY, comfortably and it is pretty good.

Honestly, DE might be the best game I've ever played. It's certainly the one that gets the adrenaline pumping the most. It gets some decent competition from Doom 2016, Serious Sam 4 and Serious Sam Fusion 2017 and also Forza Horizon 4, particularly as I find the latter two a lot more replayable than the new Doom games, which instead inspire a kind of one-take perfectionism in me. SS4 I've not had a go at replaying yet, although with the amount of patching it's getting, I'm sure it'll be a pretty different experience if/when I do.

I haven't played any games released this year, but I have seen a few. I'm not far enough into a Spelunky 2 LP to judge it's worth. So I say this is my GOTY, out of games I've watched a bit of...

If you ever played newer Deadly Rooms of Death, you may have played puzzles created by the creator of this game.
