Doomduck12367 Posted November 2, 2020 (edited) Hey i made a deathmatch level and oh don't mind the dead tree i was going to put something there but it just didn't work Now this is not the final version it's close but i will update it ever once in while, enjoy! Arena.zip oh make sure to play it in deathmatch Edited November 2, 2020 by Doomduck12367 0 Share this post Link to post
mxrgan Posted November 3, 2020 Not to be harsh, but its barely a good deathmatch map. Its nothing but a wiiiide open area, no halls or anything, you cant even get onto the blocks in the corners. Probably the only fun thing about it was tryingto dodge an enemy's plasma balls like its touhou. 1 Share this post Link to post

spineapple tea Posted November 3, 2020 (edited) In that case you should finish it before posting a thread about it. Also adding some screenshots and more information would be nice. Edited November 3, 2020 by N1ck 7 Share this post Link to post

mxrgan Posted November 3, 2020 Also, watch this video too, it could help you make much better dm maps. 3 Share this post Link to post
Mr.Rocket Posted November 3, 2020 Well there's a canvas, and Doomkid's video should help with some basic ideas for constructing your design. Definitely worth a look! I suggest, think about your layout first and how you want it to flow and begin your concept from that. Deathmatch wads like Greenwar.wad were built around this concept, so you might want to take a look at a couple of wads like that to get some ideas as well. Good luck! 2 Share this post Link to post

Mr.Rocket Posted November 3, 2020 Well that's fine man, you can make it however you want, but you must expect some criticism and ideas from others. ;) They will usually just be trying to help. People will be expecting more than just a big giant box, especially if the box is so big that you can't see the other players, heh. There's a bit more to a DM map than that, you know, think about scenarios, eg where the other player will be when you respawn etc. Or some mechanics where if the BFG is picked up, and since it's a powerful weapon, you wouldn't want it too be so easy to get, or have it so a switch must be hit to pick it up, this way other players will hear the switch and have an idea that you might be holding the BFG now, which will cause them to be a bit more tactical. It's just things to think about..;) 3 Share this post Link to post

You should have at least a bit of experience with your editor and know how to do things like switches and stuff. There are MANY, and I MEAN M A N Y tutorials on youtube. The best channels are Chubzdoomer and Doomkid, they both make tutorials on how to do different things when it comes to modding. Theres also the Doomish Den of Design, which is a map that goes a lot more in depth on what makes a good and fun level. That map is how I learned a lot of new stuff. Also, look at this thread, as you just plop the map onto the forums without giving out any useful info (i.e, Source Port, Type of Map, Editors Used, etc.). Hope you have a good day/night. 3 Share this post Link to post

Mr Masker Posted November 3, 2020 First off the map feels way too big and feels like a giant uninspired square, secondly besides the tree it feels devoid of decor or cover or anything to spice up the map, try doing some fake structures or some other rooms within the square, if you just do a big square then its no better than me just going into doom builder, doing a big room, dotting some stuff around the place and pressing save. If the map "isnt finished" to the extent that there's basically nothing then you should probably rethink your plans. 2 Share this post Link to post

What a mature way to take critisism. No I dont expect you to make "the best map ever" I don't expect myself to do so either. You're new and you can learn how to make good stuff but when you act this immature it's just insulting to whoever tries to help you. If you are really "sick and tired" of people trying to help you then too bad, because people are allowed to critisize your map as they please and you are allowed to take that critisism and use it to improve. 4 Share this post Link to post

When taken into account said advice, you do not reflect upon it, but rather, deflect. This is the best you can do, but you take it into account next time, all you want is a square. Take the time to understand what is advised. Being 12 or 42 makes no difference - in reading, unless you are dyslextic, you should be of sufficient enough skill now. 30 minutes ago, Doomduck12367 said: so i'm going to do what i want with this map you ain't stopping me!!! AtticTelephone Posted November 4, 2020 Hey, maybe you should just go watch Chubzdoomer for about... let's say, an hour or so, and see how he does things. Play Scythe, or Fava Beans, some vanilla mapset or whatever, and then take notes. See what works and what doesn't, try to make your maps less flat and more dynamic, fill in empty spaces, try editing an old 90's map and make it better for practice. 1 Share this post Link to post
YeOldeFellerNoob Posted November 4, 2020 (edited) I am sorry, but a deathmatch map is not a flat square with shotguns and BFG's splattered around like its a baby's room covered in shit, no offense. If you were to make a wide, open arena, then look at Quake's or, if you want to, take that bathroom chunk from Slender Eight Pages and copy and paste that to make a little open gym with hallways, bonus rooms, ETC. However, this is good for checking out gameplay mods that effect your movement, I.E, ZMovement. Edited November 4, 2020 by YeOldeFellerNoob Just needed to add that. 1 Share this post Link to post

Here is a lazily made example of what that idea would look like, by a newbie more so, as I made this just so I can prove a point. 1 Share this post Link to post

Im 14, and you should know some things from me... This is the internet, youre gonna get criticized for things, even if its harsh. People dont judge you based off your age. And Age does not equal skill. You can be 42 and yet be utter dogshit at mapping. Noone expects you to make the best map ever. In fact, they were trying to help you make a better map (including me) and to deflect this criticism is a slap in the damn face to those who tried to help (including me) Edited November 4, 2020 by PSI Boredom Ω 1 Share this post Link to post
