ThatWeNGuy Posted November 5, 2020 (edited) A mapset I made for this year's NaNoWADMo. 3 snowy maps. originally was a 9-maps mapset, but I somehow got lazy and decided to restart. then I was like "I could use three finished maps to make a mapset." and here we are. The wad is vanilla-compatible, tested with chocorenderlimits, prboom+ (complevel 2). No Jumping, No Crouching, Freelook is fine. This WAD is not 100% Complete btw. haven't implemented difficulty setting and polished three maps yet. Screenshots: Spoiler Downloads: NaNoWeNMo0.11.zip [NEW VERSION] hope I am not missing anything. Omniarch Posted November 5, 2020 I gave it a whirl in Crispy Doom just now, pistol-started each map, and bounced off the third (are you supposed to pistol start that one?). I had a lot of fun with the first two, especially the second. I'll organize my thoughts about the wad in a numbered list: 1. Aesthetic. These maps are very pretty, with good texture selection and tasteful detailing. I'm getting strong Akeldama episode 1 vibes, is that intentional? 2. Combat. I am rather fond of short, tight, hard-hitting combat puzzles, and these maps deliver on that front. A lot of the encounters were clever in an evil sort of way, in fact the whole of MAP02 is like that, constantly exposing the player and punishing reckless movement. The sheer number of revenants and chaingunners gave me PTSD flashbacks to Plutonia. In general, I found the first two to be difficult but fair from a pistol start (especially to a filthy save-scummer like myself). 3. Layout. I'd call the layouts well designed, if a bit blocky, but I suppose that's not so much of an issue in combat puzzles. I never found the map geometry obstructive, expect where it was intentional. I was always able to move freely so long as I managed the opposition carefully. 4. Secrets. Not much to say here, except that I am rather fond of shootable switches, especially in combat puzzle maps. On a technical front, everything seemed good. No HoMs, misaligned textures or the like, though I didn't check for VPOs since I played it in a limit-removing port. Overall, a good, punchy little wad. Do you plan on completing your original goal at some point in the future? I'd definitely play more of this. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Biodegradable Posted November 6, 2020 Quite the meanstreak you've got, Wen. These maps are slick, gritty and filled with lots of close quarters combat. Evidently, I even managed to make it even harder on myself by using Zagemod for this but that's on me hehe. Had I known you were this sadistic, I wouldn't have done so. Quite a few traps were particularly mean here :^P While most things do feel a bit close, it's not super cramped and makes for some exciting and stressful combat scenarios, your layouts were interesting, the progression is cool and some lovely texture work. It's a solid set of three cute yet nasty little maps. 10/10 ;^) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
DavidN Posted November 7, 2020 I really loved this one! The difficulty is tough but not overwhelming, and the visuals are great without having to go mad with sector detail. I really like how the levels are compact without being cramped, and that the indoor and outdoor areas flow together so well - I've always had difficulty doing that. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

ElPadrecitoCholo Posted November 9, 2020 Well, here is my gameplay about the wad, it is a video in public by the way, but I will leave a quick comment about what the Wad is in general for me. This wad seemed really interesting to me, with a good concept on the table, really the setting of being in a kind of facility on the colder side of... Canada or Alaska? I find it very great, in addition to how all the maps are structured as one progresses between the levels, like the architecture placed on each map, very interesting also with places in closed spaces and others in open spaces, or a mix between both, as is the case of map 03, although something to say is that the difficulty is really complicated, due to the fact that the enemies that appear in each of these levels, really make some confrontations are somewhat uneven, not only because of the kind of enemy that is present in front of the Marine, but they also become fights in quite small spaces, and that create a lot of discomfort, but outside of all that, the maps were entertaining, and strangely funny but in their own way So after all, maps are meant to entertain, and you make things easier or harder yourself, great job with maps and layout, mate. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Noiser Posted November 18, 2020 (edited) Here's a video of MAP01 (HMP). It was my first try recording a blind playthrough though, and unfortunately I was not able to beat your level too fast lol (despite having played on keyboard I don't think it would be any better with a mouse). My rules are simple: no saves until (or before) I get a key card. Sadly that broke the Chaingunner ambush, but I did my best to make them reappear again. It's not your fault tho, so don't worry about it. I'm really liking it so far. The combat is well thought and they all need some kind of strategy to win. Visually it's also great, I love the small details with snow and grass. Level design so far is simple and linear but effective for what is trying to do. My only suggestion is removing the Specters from the last room, that would make the final combat more fun. I will keep playing the remaining maps (not sure if will record them tho). Here's some of my bad attempts (Chocolate Doom, HMP, keyboard-only) Forgive me for the annoying part at 14:43, I keep trying to pass through the chaingunners without taking damage and failed hard. You can just skip it to 17:44 and nothing of value will be lost. I'm still trying to improve my playthroughs without saving much.
