JadingTsunami Posted November 6, 2020 (edited) >>>>>> IDGAMES RELEASE <<<<<< Hello friends! Are you ready for a bizarre adventure? Nostalgia Ain't What It Used to Be is 10 full maps/3 mini story-maps for Boom-compatible ports. Tested in PrBoom-Plus and GZDoom. PrBoom-Plus with a Software renderer is recommended as not all visual effects will work in GZDoom/GL renderers. Software rendering is not strictly required. Standard Template (thanks to Jimmy for the template) Name: Nostalgia Ain't What It Used to Be Map Format: Boom Ports Tested: PrBoom-Plus, GZDoom IWAD: Doom 2 Map(s): MAP01-MAP13 Music: See credits; some music was by Tanner Helland and some from "Nurykabe MIDI 01" by Morusque. Gameplay: Single Player Difficulty Settings: Yes Multiplayer Placement: Yes, but not tested Build Time: About 4 months Textures: See credits; uses OTEX Textures by Ola Björling (ukiro), among some others. Requirements: * Software renderer recommended (but not required) * Freelook recommended * No jumping * No crouching * Pistol start optional Other recommendations: - The pistol is not useless anymore. It has perfect accuracy and fires faster than vanilla. Consider it for ammo conservation and long-range engagements. - Secrets will make difficult maps considerably easier, so keep an eye out for them. - There are many hidden references you may recognize. They are just for fun and aren't necessary for progression. -- Background Among some old boxes I found a stash of floppy disks covered in dust. They still worked. On them were a bunch of discarded old 90's-era maps, made by me but never published. To my surprise, some of them contained interesting ideas. I set out to restore them up to semi-"modern" standards with a running storyline, but not lose their 90's spirit, if that makes sense. I tried to create something that felt fun and nostalgic yet new enough to be enjoyable. I hope you will enjoy it too. --Story A drifting, dead planet shows signs of having once supported life. Scanning reveals the sites of their sacred artifacts, now lost to time and decay. But, preserved in thick ash, you find one of their most venerated ancient totems. These items are so revered that virtually every household had at least one, if not more. What is its purpose? You bring it aboard your ship to probe its mysteries for yourself. Dig through the past to learn about this ancient society. Discover the secrets of the Knowers, a mysterious group with untold motives whose actions may have shaped the course of history for these ill-fated souls. TheNoob_Gamer Posted November 6, 2020 Some screenshots gave the impression that the place was once lively. Looks cool and moody! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
grrfield Posted November 6, 2020 (edited) I dunno how to apply the floppy disk. I've taken the floppy disk on the left side, but pressing button still says it requires a floppy disk. The floppy disk is appearing in the right side corner of my HUD though. (Try) playing this with zandronum. edit: Well that must have been the reason. It works with GZDoom. pity Edited November 6, 2020 by grrfield 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Biodegradable Posted November 6, 2020 Ooooooooooh! I'm liking those screenshots. Adding this one to my to-do list. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I wonder if Zandronum doesn't like the DECORATE file for some reason. I'll take a look. EDIT: @grrfield The issue should be resolved now. RC1.1 is available with a fix. 22 hours ago, TheNoob_Gamer said: Some screenshots gave the impression that the place was once lively. Looks cool and moody! Thanks, I did try for that feeling. I think Map 09 is the best for this. Edited November 7, 2020 by JadingTsunami 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

TheNoob_Gamer Posted November 26, 2020 Just "finished" this set. There definitely was some sort of story going on here, with you going into a disk for a certain purpose. I like how various gimmicks are played out and the visuals were definitely great. Definitely one of the more overlooked works. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
