OpenRift Posted November 13, 2020 (edited) Been meaning to ask this question for a while as I wanted to give this a whirl at some point. Preferably looking a program that allows you to adhere to a 256 color palette and view with non-square pixels. Looking for something that runs in either Windows or DOS. Noiser Posted November 13, 2020 (edited) For DOS there is Deluxe Paint 2, which have an option for square\non-square pixels IIRC. Paint XP have everything I need for pixel art tho and I made most of my D4V\D4T sprites on it, but there are probably better options out there like Graphicsgale. If you want that gritty Doom texture look it may be better to try something more sophisticated as well (like GIMP, Paint.NET or Photoshop). You can also use Slade to see how your sprites will look with non-squared pixels. Edited November 14, 2020 by Noiser 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

LexiMax Posted November 13, 2020 (edited) I've used GIMP for many many years and always seem to go back to it. It feels enough like a modern paint program to feel comfortable in and have modern features like layers, while at the same time not being so modern that it pretends like you have two heads if you want to work with a palliated image. I made a GIMP palette for Doom many years ago that should still work. There's also GrafX2 if you want a Deluxe Paint lookalike, though the interface feels like something out of the 90's. I don't think either one gives you a non-square-pixels preview, but at least with GIMP you can just scale the image with Nearest and then hit Undo to keep working.
