Doom Ports as first Doom experience?

Also, being used to playstation,  which runs all episodes as a single campaign,  I thought it was a bug that I couldn't begin Deimos Anomaly with my arsenal from ep 1 when i began playing more faithful ports before making the jump to pc 😅😅 how naive I was lol

Really? Well, I've heard that the bfg edition is not very good, but oh well, its doom.

I still played it through and loved it, it was just a minor annoyance lol

Yeah, I also loved the snes port, even though is one of the worst ports made. But well, every port has it's charm I think.

Yeah,I understand. The SNES port was as awful as h*ll, but I loved it. We all have the right to like any port.

The first Doom I played was on Super Nintendo when i was 12, I didn't get a PC version unitl I was 14 and that was the WinDoom port that came with The Ultimate Doom.  I'm not sure I have ever played the DOS version at any time.

Depending on who you ask, BFG Edition can be considered better. I never liked the flashlight gimmick of the original. The only really bad thing about BFG Edition is that they increased ammo pickups for no reasons. Which makes the game way easier than it already is.

The main reasons you'd pick Doom 3 over BFG Edition thought is modding. There is way more options for the original than there is for BFG Edition. Anyway, what I mean is that the BFG Edition is not horrible. Just okay.

In 1994 when I was 11, played it on 32x. As horrible as it was still drew me in.  In 1995 I got a PC and played it in Dos.  Had to make a boot disk because I only had 4MB of ram lol.  Actually still own the original box and cd I bought back then.

First time I played it on PC was on a 486 66mhz with 16gb of ram. My parents couldn't buy new computers due to the cost (and upkeep to keep up.). So I ended up with this older machine to play dos games. I think I first played Doom when I was ~7-8 years old. Scared the hell out of me back then but I always came back for more. The action made me want to keep trying. Was so satisfying compared to everything I had played before.

My childhood can be narrowed down to two particular games. Doom and Mechwarrior 2.

Of course, as I said, every port has its charm.

My Mom took the PC to comp usa and paid like 120 bucks to add 4 more ram lol.  I was happy to get rid of the boot disk

I've never played an amiga so have no clue how the machine ran. You've peaked my interest, was it superior to playstation technically if you got additional CPUs?

Neither did i but i just find the Amiga fascinating and i hope to have one, one day :P

With a 060 accelerator, you would get performance roughly to a Pentium. Enough to do 3D software rendering comparable to console of the time (Saturn/PSX) but far away from something like the N64.

Fun fact: The Amiga CD32 has had a prototype third party 060 acceleator in development, the TerribleFire TF360. This accelerator card slides into a CD32 case and thus leaves the case in tact. With this accelerator, the CD32 gains performance rougly on par with the other consoles of the time in terms of 3D rendering.

Yeah. It is actually kind of like something between crispy and chocolate doom, since it still is basically vanilla, with some classic bugs, no mouselook and jumping, etc, but supports dehacked, and multiple resolutions, and I believe it also has raised limits. I also find it amazing how they pulled off midi and sound effects with only the Paula chip. Never underestimate the Amiga community.

It does have raised limits as only native Amiga port (And its PowerPC subport does this aswell), it does DEH, it supports insane resolutions for the time (1600x1280) which are only really playable on a PowerPC and more.

The 68K family saw some unusual ports the last few years (Boom got ported, as did ZDoom 1.22 and Odamex) but for PPC, ADoomPPC is in terms of features still the top end for classic Amiga's with a PowerPC processor. It likely will run BTSX pretty well at high resolutions.

Right there with ya

In fact I played it when I was 6 or 7 and didnt know that Doom existed. I thought it was its own game. Only until I got a shot at it on the Xbox 360 a few years later was when I realized there was more.

Whoops. I've mentioned before that my first experience with Doom was the Switch port, before the major updates, and the same for Doom 2. I suppose my very first experience was the Shareware version on Newgrounds, but that was just as a taster. I only got into Doom last year, so I suppose there's a good excuse.

I do own Doom 64 on its original cartridge, though, and it's pretty fun, though a lack of mid-stage saves definitely makes it tougher and means I have to commit to every move.

I first played Doom on the Playstation.  I knew about Doom being on the PC, but at the time my computer was woefully underpowered and it wasn't until Jan. 96 that I had a decent machine that could play Doom.

What soundtrack do you prefer? OG or psx?

  • ZDoom is from Randi Heit and is obsolete and does not use OpenGL for accelerated rendering (Well, only in a limited fashion)
  • GZDoom sprung off from ZDoom, is from Christoph Oelckers (Graf Zahl) and since ZDoom 2.8.1 its the defacto successor of said ZDoom. It adds a OpenGL/Vulkan renderer, physically based shading and its current.

@Soon2bGlue  I prefer the PSX soundtrack overall, especially when you get into the hell levels with the freaky ambient noises added.

Totally,  i remember one when you can hear demons chanting,  and another when I can hear babies crying, simply stunning sound work in my opinion.

Doom 64 was amazing too, but I think the psx tracks were superior,  simply because they have been stuck in my head.

Even the first level of playstation had such good music, it made the base seem so desolate and isolated

All this reminiscing has made me download Playstation Doom TC lol

The GEC Master Edition is superior to that though. And it includes Doom 64, as well.

And on the other side of the coin, the GEC Master Edition on PSX is recreating all those cut levels on the original PSX Doom engine. :)

(Please die in the ones I did lots if you play it.)

When emulating ports on pc, does the port still suffer slowdown and other issues that were caused by the limitations of the original hardware?

If the emulator is accurate, yes. That would be the entire point of accurate emulation.

Cheers for the info man, I'll check it out:-)

The TC i downloaded did include Ultimate Doom, Doom2, Final Doom (psx version I assume) lost levels (which seems to be the levels that were never ported,.in psx style) and even a playstation version of No Rest For The Living, which is a  nice surprise!! Lol

The TC isn't quite accurate though. The GEC guys actually reverse-engineered the PSX Doom engines and made the maps pretty much 1:1 to the originals (except that they run on an older fork of GZDoom).

NRFTL maps are included on the GEC Playstation Master Edition though, along with some stuff like Romero's extra maps, SIGIL, The Master Levels, and so on. Quite a bit. And they're all playable on the original PlayStation, or whatever PS-emulating hardware you got. (There's a build for PSP/PS Vita/PSTV, for example, and I just had a friend who said he got it running fine on his jailbroken PS Classic. Obviously emulators like RetroArch and stuff will run it well, too.)

Do note that where both projects have overlap, the maps may differ slightly from versions the PSX TC had, though (even though some of the people involved in the GEC project were involved in the PSX TC Project as well). The main reason is that the PSX has certain limitations and restrictions (for example, strict RAM, sidedef texture, and flat requirements), and while the PSX TC team tried to keep those as close as possible, in some cases they actually created maps that wouldn't run properly on the PSX engine. The true limits were only discovered by the disassembly (and testing on actual PSX hardware), a luxury they simply did not have.

I'm not trying to knock the PSX TC project, mind you - it was definitely a good project, and I enjoyed the hell out of it myself. But basically, it's been supersceded by GEC's efforts.

I played on Doom95 in 2012 when I first got into doom, and then I think I used Skulltag for a really long time, then Zandronum, ZDoom, then GZDoom. I actually miss Skulltag and its built in survival compaign!
