The Button in the Pillar in E1M1

I have this problem where the button doesn't spawn in the pillar near the spawn room. Is it the problem with my game or the source-port (I use PR-Boom+)? Please help!

try using GZDoom, if it still doesnt work, then try to get a different wad of Doom [like if you dont already, get ultimate doom] 

if it still doesnt work after that, then i have no clue

You are using the original Doom 1 iwad. The button is there only in the Ultimate Doom iwad.

I can't, it's illegal. It will work 100%. Just get the Ultimate Doom.

Oof. I just brought that up as an example and because that tool seems to be one of the most user-friendly ones I came across.

Seems likely that you're using the free shareware version, which only has the first episode and also lacks the button if I recall correctly. Have you tried loading up episode 2 or 3? If you can't, that's probably what it is.

No, you can simply use either of  the patchers I linked above. That will patch your Doom IWAD (or the main game data file) to the latest version and you will have access to the switch.

 

Or yeah, maybe you use shareware, in which the button was yet to exist.

Well, the one won't turn it from Full Doom to Ultimate Doom, like I said.

 

But if he's only got the Shareware IWAD, then it's moot and he'd have to buy the game no matter what, and in that case he'd get the Ultimate IWAD anyway.

Does the dropping floor in E1M4 have a swastika (rather than a similar, but non-swastika) motif? That might indicate which shareware version this is:

Also, purchasing the game isn't very much. You can get it from Steam and many other places. Just do a search for "ultimate doom for sale" (without the quotes) and you should get many options in your country for a 3-4 dollars/pounds or whatever.

If you decide you've had enough of iD Doom's first episode, you can go grab FreeDOOM. Those two WADs are compatible with almost all mods and map sets, and have two full campaigns.

Yep, the patchers can transform the IWAD into many different versions but they need to be the commercial release. You can't go from shareware to the full game, it would pretty much be illegal to do so.

 

OP, you can use Freedoom instead, or buy the game on GOG, Bethesda.net, or Steam. On Steam at least it comes with both the Unity version and the original DOS v1.9 release.

The switch is only there in REGISTERED DOOM V1.9 and ULTIMATE DOOM.
It is not there in the Shareware and was added with the update/patch to
Ultimate Doom by John Romero himself to make deathmatch more interesting.

 Help your parents with the housework, mow the lawn or wash somebody's car and your'done.

Both GZDOOM 4.50 and CRISPY DOOM. No mods.

 

After cheating through with "noclip", the door opens normally from the other side. Then opens normally from this side.

Does it really matter that much? Many don't consider that button canon anyway. I believe it was added mostly to make the map more circular for deathmatch.

There's a trigger line right in front of the door that does something when you walk across it. If you are playing in a Doom, rather than Boom, compatibility profile, this line "eats" your activation and prevents you from triggering the door. Until the door is open (from the other side) and you cross it. I can confirm that with GZDoom in "Doom (strict)" mode you're stuck. Change "all special lines can block <USE>" in the "map/action" compatibility settings to off, and you're unstuck.

 

For Crispy, I think you're out of luck as it's a limit-removing Doom port, not a Boom port.

I agree. One topic is about an non-existing switch in an IWAD, the other topic concerns a possibly buggy door in a PWAD.
Yesterday I couldn't find my car key and therefore I had to take the bus.

If you buy Doom Classic in the Bethesda.net launcher, it seems regular Ultimate Doom is also available for download.   So you can get the original version and the new port for four player splitscreen and other features all for 5 USD.

 

Or try this wad with it, heh.   That'll put the switch there. (But I'm not sure if this will work with less than Ultimate Doom)
