FWIW Ultimate Doom was offered as a free upgrade to those who had already registered their copy of Doom. If he’s playing a registered copy, he has every legal/moral/logical right to a copy of Ultimate, surprised there aren’t any “up patchers” that take this into account?

Boom map doesn't work on Crispy Doom. For GZDoom, you probably set your compatibility wrong.

For the switch he does not need UD. V 1.9 (non-ultimate) has it also. Years ago, I prepared some patchfiles including Up- and "Down"-dates to and from 1.9 <> UD ...:-)

CORRECTION: My memory played bad tricks on me:
DooM V 1.9 DOES NOT have the switch, it is only available in ULTIMATE DOOM

The Ultimate Doom’s E1M1 has a berserk pack exclusive to the multiplayer mode (not on UV / NM), and a second shotgun for the multiplayer mode as well. And well, John Romero being John Romero for the sake of being John Romero edited the map so that it has exactly 666 sidedefs.

 

Other than that, all maps of Doom Registered 1.9 and The Ultimate Doom are byte-to-byte identical (obviously, The Ultimate Doom has nine new exclusive maps).

 

Edit: In the multiplayer mode, there are three extra explosive barrels as well.

It was nice of John to improve Hangar for deathmatch in Ultimate Doom. I’ve played the shareware version in DM and it’s a snoozefest. Multiple paths out of the starting area and the extra shotgun near the start makes it much more fun for FFA!
