Ya know, I think Asgore has a point, Doom helps me to get rid of the stress and the anger I may have accumulated during the day by bullying and kicking the cyberdemon's ass

New to the forums but I can say confidently that all of these would get tiring after a certain amount of time, having watched a quite a lot of videos of doom and a few of these various topics.

all arguments you mentioned are known and beaten to death more than a berserked imp, but i find the ones regarding brutal doom and slaughter / difficulty levels the most obnoxious, given that they're often the playground for wannabes and 13y old who played doom when it came out.

I clicked everything, but what's really annoying, and I think EVERYONE can agree is the worst, whether or not Doom causes violence. I don't think it does for two reasons:

1) Doom helps me take my anger out on something, which is the opposite

and

2) Video games have scientifically been proven NOT to cause violence. Sorry Karens ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ LOL

I don't think the vast majority of people nowadays would seriously argue that Doom makes people more violent or into satanists unless some very religious and/or conservative old man or woman (Or multiple.) just found out about Doom.
And even then I doubt them getting mad at Doom or any other game would gain anywhere near as much traction anymore, what with video games in general having become far more ubiquitous and socially accepted in the past 20 years.
Which means that recent attempts at blaming video games for violence or whatever other negative thing ended up with a lot more backlash (At least as far I remember.) than they did back when games like Mortal Kombat and Doom were released, since now a lot more people DON'T agree with that view, which is at least in part because the same people that were teens and kids back in the early and mid 90s are now adults (Obviously).

While there may be less people like you and me who share those views compared to back then, there are still politicians all over the world that still hold views like that against video game violence, AND people still vote for them.

JWs do. Lots of religious groups do, although I guess the broader/laxer ones aren't. Then again, religion is wild, man. Especially up there in America. Gee, you guys can invent some real crazy shit sometimes lol. I think there was some really weird crap that happened to people who believed there was an UFO following a comet or something?

OT- Heavens Gate, and it was a comet they believed was some sort of alien vessel for their souls to board for the afterlife. Something like that, anyways.

Yes but most of those aren't the majority of people, and people in general have stopped caring as much about violent video games.

Also I'm Greek not American lol, though what I said still applies here as well I'm pretty sure, even with Greece being a lot more religious than the US.

That's less people being against video games specifically and supporting those politicians for it as much as it is being indifferent towards video games and simply supporting them for other reasons than their opposition to video games.

I may not interact so much in these forums aside from lurking in the shadows and observing around thread by thread like the anti-social degenerate that I am, let alone contribute anything at all to this community, but... I still don't understand why people say doom is dying or it's dead. The community is very far from being considered "dead" when you count in all the yearly good shit that comes out, even if it's not much, it has quality. From megawads/mapsets/tiny projects by a group of people or done solo by some madlad, to the mods that get released and are constantly worked on (for example: Combine_Kegan and his Combined Arms, Terminus who recently came out with some megaman deathmatch mod iirc? etc.). So how in the fuck does someone actually think that doom or the community itself is dying? Say what you want, but this community is still thriving, as small as it is, it has soul.

I had to vote for almost all of these, but in particular I'm really tired of hearing about Brutal Doom, Source Port arguments, or from someone who seems to think slaughter is when a level has a bunch of dudes in it, and is therefore "bad" or whatever.

I also don't like the super-overplayed Doom related ones. Like Best/Worst Powerup/Map/Gun/Monster/etc. These aren't automatically bad by their nature, it's just the repetition and the fact that every argument for or against a certain thing has just been made to death already, that makes these really annoying to keep seeing pop up.

If you're still accepting things to add to the poll, I'd like to nominate "Is jumping/crouching/mouselook cheating?". In a game that has literal cheat codes hardcoded in the game and anyone can activate god mode at anytime during gameplay by typing a sequence of letters on their keyboard (and everybody knows the code), we're going to suddenly pretend to care about cheating? Who cares if people cheat on their own time, anyway? It's not a competition. Let people play the game however they want to play.

EXACTLY. even though i consider jumping to places in Doom 1 and 2 cheating, i dont really care. now if i want to do a serious playthrough i wont jump or crouch.

but it is not worth bringing up another topic about.

now mouselook i can not play without.[and mouselook isnt cheating] i just feel very restricted without mouselook. ive been doing it for so long that it feels very uncomfortable without it.

For me it’s the “which source port is best” argument.

While a lot of the others are repetitive, I do occasionally stumble across new information in those threads which is always cool :-D

Regarding the “which source port is best” argument threads though, I usually find them usually more subjective (which is fine) but don’t usually learn anything from them.

To be honest, all of them are pretty annoying, but I will go with the "How doom is truly supposed to be experienced", difficlty settings and all, because of how pointless and restrictive it can become.

Especially the argument that you are not supposed to use the mouse at all. I was expecting more people to bring it up, because dictating how people should have fun is infuriating to me.

Let alone that it's not even valid!

All of them. They collectively amount to why I rarely spend time here these days, since that checklist summarises 90% of new threads that aren't releases.

Ugh, BD arguments and BD being better than vanilla Doom annoys me more than anything else. Doom being 2D is a close 2nd.

I personally am tired of the Doom is 3D/isn't 3D arguments. Like I am annoyed with the Brutal Doom arguments as well but at least those are at some level, funny to read; at least a little bit.

From what I have seen of the "Doom is 3D" thread, what you define as 3D would pretty much fix your answer with very little breathing room. In the end you have people arguing about who's definition of 3D is right. Like how are you going to properly discuss/argue about something if you can't even agree on what is a 3D game. I was really happy when the thread finally died but then it got fired up again.

Sorry, I'm just irrationally annoyed at that topic for some reason even though Brutal Doom arguments and "X stock map is good/bad and here's why" arguments have been gnawing away at my patience for longer.

Doom 3 is a good or bad Doom game. Although I don't really see heated arguments. Just a repeating discussion with the same opinions each time.

  • 2 weeks later...

Arguments about Br000tal Doom suck, because in the end it just results in gatekeeping over how it is or isn't the "true" way to play Doom.
Which ties in with the other poll option, I guess.

Not really an option in the poll, but I find it really annoying when people (obviously outside of Doomworld) argue that DOOM is extremely outdated and aged like a milk.

...what?

The dramas over what mapping standards should be, resulting in people throwing out huge chunks of work over personal tastes, the kind of thing Nine Inch Heels mentioned. There are some groups that just cant accept that some people like different styles of maps and a few have developed weirdly bloated egos over it, that go unchecked because forum popularity.

Haven't seen it in a while thankfully, but I nearly left the Doomworld forums due to it a while back when it was at its worst, as stuff like this ultimately cost me a good friend that I've NEVER seen again, anywhere in the world.

I dont understand the arguments on people thinking that if you like Doom you are a satanist. Come on, it is a game where you KILL demons, you dont join them!

then again, the people that complain about these things probably havent even seen the game, kind of how like Warner Brothers didnt even see Meatcanyons video "Wabbit Season" when they gave him a copyright claim and took the video off of youtube, saying that Meatcanyon was using their lore.... so i guess bugs bunny is now a rapist?

About how doom is dying, I enjoy playing the game I don't wanna hear people crying whether the game is dying or not. I'm surprised "keyboard is the true way to play" isn't on here lmao.

Perhaps not the "true" way to play it (as it doesn't allow a player to realize the full gameplay potential) but certainly the most "authentic" one, as it allows you to recreate most people's first hands-on experience with Doom, back in the day.

But that's kinda like saying that you're not a "true" high-jump athlete unless you have mastered  all four techniques (but in a competition, you're still only gonna use the Fosbury Flop ;-)

You can kinda sorta tie this to prejudice and level of education, I guess.

Those also tend to be the people who think violent games and art make you violent and hateful, morbid art depressed, metal brainwashes the listener, etc. They don't really understand much outside their little box, so it's best to ignore them altogether. Learning to pick your battles, essentially.

Sadly, although this mindset would get you usually laughed at in other parts of the world, here it is still alive. Find someone in their 50s or so, and chances are, 1 out of 5 will agree with the aforementioned nonsense. Worse yet, those may also indoctrinate their offspring, so they will share the same prejudice as they do...

And, at any rate, this particular argument is becoming especially irrelevant nowadays, as if being a Satanist is a bad thing. It sure still carries a lot of stigma and probably always will, but those pointing fingers at it tend to be people who have not read a serious book on the topic at any point in their life, and have their opinions based on stereotypes, horror movies, and similar bullshit. Then again, even if they did, I am highly skeptical they could make much out of it, as it first requires understanding balance in all things and leaving preconceived notions at the door, which they most likely won't do. They'll just reinterpret it all in a fashion that suits their own views and biases.

i'd say that people have the right to be satanist or whatever else, and it's not anyone's business to make sure they don't become this way or that way - people have the right to take whatever influences they want from anything they wish and become exactly who they wanna be.  But that really has nothing to do with Doom.
