How do I make the jump to the exit in E1M4?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently trying to speedrun E1M4, and I saw this run. Pretty straightforward, but I haven't been able to replicate the jump. Normal strafe-running seemingly isn't fast enough. I even tried using SR50 and it didn't work. I noticed he was shot by a hitscanner right when he was about to jump-- did that boost him across?

The gap is very difficult to do with normal SR50, the angle has to be perfect, but in Adam's run you linked he got a boost from the hitscanner which made the jump a little easier. It's easier in NM-Speed because they shoot you on sight, making the chances you get boosted much higher.

That's what I was thinking, but I didn't know NM-Speed was even a category. Since Nightmare! would do nothing but make this run easier (if only slightly), I thought it would be considered an unfair advantage or something as this was meant to be a UV-Speed run.

I've kept attempting this jump, and luckily the rest of the level is really short and easy. I've manage to wait behind the door for a second and get a boost at the right time, but it's super hard to angle myself correctly, like you said. Anyways, thanks for the info-- I guess my attempts haven't been in vain!

Edit: I did it! And when I got to the door, I pressed spacebar and saw the melting screen. And realized that I died...

Are you... sure? This jump is understandable, but this run though

I've been doing it on Nightmare! for the past few minutes and it really isn't much harder on Nightmare. Taking a little damage isn't a big deal, and I can sorta avoid the turbo pinkies.
