You can always try better in a second submission! But solid run, you're up!

Oh damn, i didn't realize that's possible here, but i remember now reading something like that :)  There's so much time left on this that i think i will!

My second attempt: Category 3 (though i'd never seen beyond level 03), HNTR, endured until level 05 at 46:32!

Feel like this was a major improvement, and am kind of happy about getting through also tricky level 04 without dying on first try.

Love seeing your will for improvement! Although, I think this is actually a category 2 (category 3 means that you're pretty much an expert on this megawad) Congrats, maybe you can try your luck with the Challenge competition ;)

Thanks!  Yeah, these competitions are a fun way to try stuff :)

As for Sigil... haha, umm, think i'll wait for some competition where one doesn't either have to finish it or play on UV(+).... But naturally it's already been played before here so i probably won't get a chance!

PS: i was gonna suggest Cat2 first, but wasn't sure so went with the safer one.

@dei_eldren: I would keep trying to get further in KS.  You haven't actually gotten to the 'hard' maps yet.  06 is your next hurdle, then probably 09 is the next major difficulty spike.  Go for it!  Or you can try to get to same place on a higher difficulty.  Good job if this is your first time playing maps like this!

Hey, indeed it is my first time - i've only played two IWADs before: Moonblood (great set that i abandoned at lvl09 a few months ago) and Eternal Doom (on HNTR, and i like it very much too) and they're quite different to this :)  Especially on ED one can almost always plan the fights with time, it's not relentless at all, and there were hardly any 'traps', especially allowing for save/load, too.  i'll start going through KS on HMP, the first 3 levels got quite easy on HNTR already on the second try, like going through the motions.   But now that i think of it though if already lvl06 gets a difficulty spike then maybe i'll just breeze through the first levels and see what it's about, still on HNTR.  i appreciate the encouragement!

For this being only your third megawad, you chose a heavy hitter to try.  There's a thread for skill improvement and you definitely jumped a few positions.  After 09, probably map 13 is the next one with a difficulty increase, then around 18 you start getting into the true slaughter-lite and harder stuff.  Difficulty is a bit subjective after a little bit, but generally in this one, the higher the monster count, the harder the map.  Though that's not always the case in wads if you get equipped well and there's abundant health items.  If you have significant trouble (like after 20 some tries you still can't make it through something) I'd go try to play some of those previous maps on harder settings.

Thank you for this.  Have to say though that playing this map at this point is just that it happened to be on offer for the competition haha!  So i was lucky, i guess.

So far, from what i saw, i liked the fact that even if it was relentless there was always just enough room to figure it out on the fly (for me on HNTR).  But what it comes to slaughtermaps, i've seen someone play Fruit Salad and Sunlust, and there's for my taste too much luck involved - of course it takes skill, but the skill alone isn't sufficient, and i think that's a bit unfair; they were great players but died a lot of times.  So if it gets to that in KS i'll probably give it up - but i'll definitely take your advice and play the first levels on higher difficulty again until the maps that i think are unconquerable (if any, seems none of the experienced players mind them!)  Who knows, maybe in time i don't find them unreasonable, i've no idea :D  In the other competition i played Sawdust today, and must admit when in first level all hell broke loose getting the blue key it was pure luck i didn't die, but watching the demo i realized it was my own lack of situational and spatial awareness that caused the situation.

i'll also find that thread re: skill progression!

Welp, managed to do KS IronMan style up through map 08.  Here's the demo:

UV, category 2.  Enjoy!

Edit :I used PrBoom+

Total time for ending map 08 was 50:51

I did get through the hard part of map 09, but received a surprise cyberdemon that I didn't count on.  lol.

Category 2 UV Finished the wad in 6:56:24 game time. Real time was more like 9 - 10 hours if you include the few breaks I took to stretch/eat food etc. Recorded with CL2 so no Saves were possible to use, If i died in a map then I had to pistol start it. 1st death was on Map 15 and then I ended up going to the secret map by mistake so had to do that map... 2nd death was on Map 20 (I think) which was probably the worst map in the wad by far due to instant death traps that require trial and error.. at that point I was becoming fatigued so a lot of the end maps have some deaths here and there, most of them probably on Map 28 since I was just trying to figure out how to end the map by killing as few monsters as possible and just getting to the exit. I played KS years ago in single player and once pretty recently in co-op.

Did we ever reach a conclusion about the validity of using either complevel 9 or complevel -1 on runs for demo and saving purposes?

I will leave it in a more open way. Any complevel that works for you without brekaing the WAD. In most cases, -1 and 9 can cause a slight disadvantage to the player, but it shouldn't be a major problem and at least it will allow the player to make use of saves & loading.

Standard Run, Category 1, HMP difficulty.

I finished MAP16 and stopped after that.
Time: I finished MAP16 in 2:20:29 in-game time, 4:05:20 real time.
Recorded: Twitch live via OBS, played on GZDoom 4.5.0. with Doom (strict) compatibility settings.

Video: available here. Playthrough starts at 48 seconds.

Spoiler

OMG, that was AMAZING! The fights in this WAD are awesome! I almost stopped enduring when dead monsters were obscuring a skull key in MAP10. I'm glad I pushed through. I was also happy with all the extra details that make even the most boring hallways really nice. Took some screenshots from MAP11 onwards :).

I started my playthrough thinking I might be able to blast my way through to get a higher score. Even on HMP that was not the case at all, and I actually enjoyed the WAD too much to try and rush it after that.

Category 3, UV, dsda-doom v0.10.0
Finished SIGIL in 35:16 (no secret level)

det2-rotwang-sigil.zip

Nowadays when I play through The Ultimate DOOM I also play through SIGIL, and I know how to max all the maps. I played through the first few maps fairly quickly and then pumped the brakes on the last few (I crawled through E3M7) and even then my playthrough was iffy here and there.

It'll probably take me several sessions to play through Kama Sutra, so I'll post that either once I'm finished or before the month is out.

Maybe I'm getting this wrong, but you're only supposed to play one session without stopping :P

Streamed my run yesterday, category 2 I believe? (Have seen some maps but don't know them well / haven't prepared a run). Made to map11 before having to quit due to time constraints.

Edit: Ah shit, sorry @Endless, I meant to go back and provide the details but fully forgot, my bad.

Your score is up! Also, I do recommend always providing the complete submission info, it makes things a bit easier when calculating your score ;P

Anyway, solid job mate!

Kama Sutra

Category: 1

Difficulty: ITYTD

Dead on: Map 20 (reached Map 20 at 4:06:32) *

Kills: 271/336

Time of death: 4:24:29
Recorded with: PrBoom+ v. 2.5.1.4

endur_pegleg_ksutra.zip

After playing Doom for 6 hours of real time (there was a lot of dying involved), I finally called it a night. There was a part of me that wanted to make it through to Map 21, but there's a bigger part of me that needed sleep. Knowing that this was a full megawad, and given it was described as being in the "Hell Revealed" style of gameplay, I figured that the only way I was going to get reasonably far, in a reasonable amount of time, was to play on ITYTD. And, in that regard, Kama Sutra didn't disappoint. It was reasonably fun to play. There were a lot more soulspheres and megaspheres and blue armors scattered around the maps, along with a fair amount of ammo. The map layouts were confusing at times, but they were ultimately manageable. And compared to what I've played of Hell Revealed, the maps in Kama Sutra had a lot more room to move, which was handy, especially in some of the bigger fights. Overall, this was not a bad time.

@Endless

* In the interest of full disclosure, I may have saved a 4th time on Map 11. I got tired of killing the last 20 enemies over and over and over again as I struggled to make the final run to the exit, so I saved it right there in front of the soulsphere. I'm not sure if that was the 3rd or 4th save, but after what felt like 8 or 10 or 12 attempts, I figured I wasn't gaining much of an advantage beyond my sanity. If you want to consider the run over after Map 11, that's your prerogative.

Sigil

Category: 2

Difficulty: UV

Dead on: E3M2

Kills: 1/34

Time of death: 5:01

Recorded with: PrBoom+ v. 2.5.1.4

endur_pegleg_sigil.zip

Those lost souls really did a number on me. Oh well. I don't really think I was getting much further than E3M2 without saves anyway. Sigil is not a bad mapset. It does a decent job, I think, of establishing a mood. It feels oppressive due to the confined spaces, and I think that was ultimately what Romero was going for.

Nice run mate! 6 hours of pure endurance, just the way I like :P Your score is up, and the fact that you used an extra save doesn't mean that you'll get banned, but just a ''yellow card'', to say the least.

Congrats :D
