Uploading to IDgames, a difficult and discouraging experience

There's a bolded text on top of the file page telling you it's currently broken.

I see nothing here to that effect.

Edit:  I see a vague message about that if I go to an individual file.  But why would I see that if my file is missing in the first place?

I honestly don't think it's that difficult. When I uploaded my first and so far only map, I hadn't used an FTP client in years and I figured out the whole process within an hour of deciding to upload it. Yes, it is kind of a long time for one file, but once you know how to do it, every subsequent file will take like a minute, so it really isn't that bad.

YMMV, of course. As I said I hadn't used an FTP client in a long time, but I already had experience with that type of technology. I ran an FTP server on my desktop back in high school so I could easily access my files from any device. I fully understand wanting an easier process, and there probably should be one, but I also don't necessarily think it's a bad thing to demand some level of computer skills from people to use your server.

The comments you described are examples of gatekeeping, and that sucks, but requiring knowledge of how to use an FTP client, in and of itself, is not. I fully believe anyone can learn how to do it without that much trouble. Not to say it isn't justifiable to think it's not a useful skill and that you shouldn't have to learn it, of course you're justified in thinking that, which is why I said there probably should be an easier method.

One think to keep in mind though, is that this system has been setup decades ago, and it may be way trickier to change it than you think it is. From the point of view of the people running the server, it's probably just not worth the trouble. And besides FTP is a technology that is still used everywhere and is the best way to upload files to a server.

Wouldn't Perl/PHP require setting up an intermediary server, with its own associated maintenance issues? Besides, that'd be soooo Web 1.0.

Gamers.org has always had a web server since the DoomGate days, so that's covered. But yes, it's old-skool, as is all of the site. ;-)

I was thinking more of a purely browser-based approach a-la Web 2.0, using e.g. jsftp. If the tutorial is to be believed, making an idgames ftp spamming page is just a few simple commands away, that's why I recommended taking it easy with experimenting directly with the real deal ;-)

Not familiar with that nor Node.js, so I'd need more specific guidance to understand what jsftp is, how it works, and how it can be set up. The one tutorial site coming up in search results (openbase.io) is dead.

If people are going through the effort to get their stuff on /idgames, then good on them. YouTube comment sections are like a McDonald's bathroom stall. Write whatever toxic bullshit you want and leave. Pay no attention to them.

A quick glance at that suggests it is an extension for nodejs - which is a server-side implementation of javascript. So yes, it would be FTP via javascript, but NOT via a web browser (unless you sent the results back from the server as part of a http response). This, therefore, is - I'm sorry to say - definitely a developer job (and much more involved) than just installing e.g. FileZilla.

Also - my experience uploading my levels to ID Games was certainly not difficult or discouraging. The actual upload process is trivial - just configure your FTP client as per here, from step 7.

Certainly, if your WAD is not accepted for whatever reason, that is discouraging, but the rules governing acceptance of your WAD will be the same however slick the physical upload process is.

** EDIT **

Just like @QuotePilgrim said above...

Spoiler

Should probably read the posts better before spamming...
