AnonKaiju Posted May 24, 2021 Something I've always wanted to see is a midi pack for doom 64 that replaces the songs with classic commercial doom music (not just doom 1 and 2 but also tnt since it has an underrated soundtrack). Don't get me wrong I love doom 64's atmospheric soundtrack but I've always wondered how well traditional doom music could fit over the levels. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

To summarize my previous posts, a megaWAD is deserving of a MIDI pack if it is widely remembered and either: Doesn't have a custom soundtrack, Primarily uses tracks from the commercial IWADs, or Reuses tracks from other projects in a way that doesn't fit the levels. Alien Vendetta is the best candidate in my mind. Though having a fully Free as in Freedom soundtrack for Double Impact would also be nice! I'm aware doom 64 for doom 2 counts but it's not the same without doom 64's sprite work and lighting. Though you are correct in that doom 64 doesn't exactly fit the criteria 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Roofi Posted May 24, 2021 Without talking about megawads, I wonder if composers would manage to make midis on old random maps of a similar quality to D!Zone dating from 1994 or 1995. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

That would be a good premise for a "speedMIDI contest." Hmm... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

To be honest I'd like to see a really good MIDI pack for Mock 2 with high production quality, done ironically so that it doesn't fit Doom in general, let alone Mock 2. Properly mixed, orchestral and ambient MIDIs, something really baroque. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

But I wouldn't want to make that a whole project over Alien Vendetta for example. Edited May 24, 2021 by northivanastan 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Wadmodder Shalton Posted May 24, 2021 Chillax should technically have an original custom MIDI project as well. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

To be honest I can't really think of a serious answer, most high-profile megawads (aka the only ones I managed to play) that don't have an original soundtrack use custom MIDIs picked by the mapper themselves and it is an ethical issue whether or not someone can start a MIDI replacement project in this case, especially since the trend seems to be that people mostly want to re-experience older wads which were made by mappers that might not even be alive today, or might have left the community a long time ago and are basically unreachable. To get such a project going, you need both parties to agree to retrofit a custom soundtrack for a wad that already uses MIDIs that aren't part of the original soundtrack. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I was not convinced with the songs. I'd remake twzone.wad all over again if I had a choice but to me it is pointless. Once Zone 400 and my UD megawad is complete next year I'm focusing more on family. I'll still play Doom and make occasional maps here and then. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Devalaous Posted May 25, 2021 You know what I want to see on the subject of music for megawads? Borrowing from those deathmatch megawads (Gothic series, TNT's DM wads etc) with music from the likes of Mark Klem and David Shaw that's always going unheard by the SP community. I like having music options for all these replays of custom wads with no soundtracks. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Devalaous Posted May 27, 2021 A megawad for consideration that is often forgotten is Vilecore. 32 maps of stock music. Dunno if Doom Dude has plans to add music for the 1.2 release, but hey, its another big megawad that is ripe for midimaking. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Wadmodder Shalton Posted May 27, 2021 also, both Herian & Herian 2 should also have their own original MIDI OST project. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Devalaous Posted May 27, 2021 True, Herian 2 IS a proto-cacoward winner. It has a complex dependency on external files that werent futureproofed, if you wanted music etc. Honestly, I thought noone even remembered the Herians, outside of kmexii's reviews. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Michael Jensen Posted May 28, 2021 Cleimos 2, since it has no custom MIDI's and is also largely forgotten, so project like this would bring much deserved attention to it ;) 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Devalaous Posted May 30, 2021 Realm of Chaos is another soundtrack-less megawad. And one of Doomworld's frequent posters worked on that one iirc. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Honestly, I didnt even know Rebirth existed till it had a midi pack made for it, and while I knew TVR existed, the midipack made me play it to completion. Also, about Hell Revealed: This was copied and pasted from one of the text files for it "The new musics are currently taken from Rise of the Triad - we might release an updated version with original musics soon." So, none of the music was really permanent for it, not the midified band music in its original 11 map release, or the ROTT music in the final. MIDI pack can definitely happen :p 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dreemurr Deceevurr Posted June 8, 2021 No End In Sight is definitely a set in need of a custom midi project. You could probably structure it in theme like the wad itself, with Bobby-esque MIDI rock bangers and electronic tracks for the first episode before slowly but surely introducing heavier or more offbeat stuff in the later episodes. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
