Doom Shareware Floppy Disk Archive

This is a cool idea. I was on a tear about 12 years ago picking up random shareware packages. I will have to dig my boxes out of the closet this weekend. There are so many interesting variations and packaging.

I’m pretty sure I have a big box micro star version.

If I remember correctly, the Shareware release was 2 floppies, and the full release was 4 floppies? And Doom II was released as two versions: either 1 CD or 4 floppies. Do I have that right?

Yes, you have it right mostly. Doom II and Ultimate Doom were 5 floppies.

Are all the shareware version different?

Well officially there's version differences between 1.0 to 1.9.

Regarding the floppy disks distributions, sometimes it's just different label and same installers, in this archive I'm just preserving those which the installers are different.

I guess there were no changes made in game.

Since this topic is about shareware versions released on floppy disks /images, I am probably out of topic. Anyway, if you find this interesting for you, in 1996  The Software Labs released on CD the shareware version 1.9 with a nice installer and some additional files to browse the documentation included.

You can find it here. Cd is not required. You can simply download the files from the “DOOOM” folder.

PC Review , on the February 1994 issue, released Doom 1.0 on two floppy disks. On the installer is mentioned TranSend Services Ltd  as UK distributor.

According to the site the floppy disks were, probably, originally released by “What PC Games” magazine.

A Doom HMV Promo release is listed on this site

There is also the shareware 1.1 released in Germany by Pearl Agency in collaboration with the german magazine Dos-trend.The full entire issue 4/1993 of Dos-Trend Extra is dedicated to Doom. It is a very nice number (with many screenshots taken from the press release beta version). This release comes with a specific installer but unfortunately I was unable to install the game in any way perhaps due the first corrupted disc . You can take a look to the floppies and the magazine here

I apologize if this is out of topic.

I consider this is a good contribution. Never saw those until today. Also I like the HMV Promo release.
