thestupidmeddy Posted January 18, 2021 I'm a newbie of this community, but I'm not a stranger towards Doom and Heretic. I remember playing them briefly when I was 5 years old.(I'm 20 now by the way) And I found a resurgence of nostalgia towards Doom and Heretic 6 years ago, and I keep returning to them ever since. Also I found a strange appreciation for Hexen recently. My questions that I want to adress would be: Why with the release of the new games, the interest for the older games is smaller? And why the community for such an influential game as Doom feels small? 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Andromeda Posted January 18, 2021 Hello and welcome! As for your questions, I've noticed the opposite phenomenom: the new games have sparked interest from younger players in the old games and thus the community has been growing. Maybe it feels small when compared to AAA game communities but for a 27 year old game, I'd say it's doing fine! 17 Quote Share this post Link to post
thestupidmeddy Posted January 18, 2021 Yeah that is impressive. But I asume that the community had and has some struggles keeping itself alive. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Chris Hansen Posted January 18, 2021 We’re not struggling to keep Doomworld alive that’s for sure! Plenty of new content posted everyday and new faces everywhere. I’ve been coming here for almost 20 years and it’s still worth my time. 11 Quote Share this post Link to post

P41R47 Posted January 18, 2021 Hi and welcome to the community! Hope you enjoy your stay ;) I play this game since i has 4 years old, 27 years ago, and for certain, this game and this community are not only in good shape and healthy. There are new content and a lot of new members everyday, and there are also new players and new members on the different country communities, like the Russian Doom Community, the Japanese Doom Community, the Czech Doom Community, and some other countries small communities. New and more players enjoy this game everyday. Fact, not asumption. And then there is also the ZDoom Forums community, releasing new content at even greater pace than here, i think. Some members are here, too, but a lot just stay there using ZDoom base ports. 45 minutes ago, Meddy said: But I asume that the community had and has some struggles keeping itself alive. BlueThunder Posted January 18, 2021 I've been playing Doom for over 25 years now on and off and I only first came here a year ago, but personally I couldn't believe how big the community is after all these years. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

We're getting new faces everyday, players, mappers ,speedrunners and people who just want to talk about the games or relax with likeminded people. Welcome to doomworld! may demons tremble at your huge guts(rip and tear, etc. )! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Silhouette 03 Posted January 18, 2021 @Meddy , just a tip, you can quote multiple posts in one post as to not forum spam. It just helps keep things a bit more organized. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

That's something very minor in this place. It's so minor that I can't explain more, a big example is Graf Zahl's hate on Lilith.pk3, here's a video explaining that by Dwars: https://youtu.be/VnjLZow4zK0 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Ain't all old farts hanging onto yesteryear. Tons of content coming out, new faces, old players coming back, players joining up who first played Doom when the game was of already of drinking age! The GZDoom modding scene is absolutely wild. I can't even keep track. People are creating so much stuff there's one Youtuber who does almost nothing else but review it iirc. Seems like good health to me! What communities are you comparing it to out of curiosity? I don't have much to weigh it against. Doomworld is pretty much the last messageboard site I come back to regularly the way I would 20 years ago. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

The accessibility of modern editing tools has gone a long way to making the game easier to create for than it was in the past, and as such there's no slow-down in the amount of content being released. Plus, Doom isn't a static game: tastes change, influential mappers and modders come and go, source ports evolve in capability and popularity, and as such it always feels like the community is pushing to something new. If you want to learn more about how the community has evolved over time, I recommend reading through: A selection of The Cacowards, the annual celebration of the best wads released that year. The Roots of Doom Mapping, a full deep-dive into the evolving nature of Doom wads over the years. These should give you a sense of how, and why, the community has never been in danger of petering out. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

dei_eldren Posted January 18, 2021 (edited) i asked my 19yo gaming nephew if he knew Doom and he said he believes he's seen a YT clip or two of some such thing. So from my point of view the answer is there's simply so much stuff, and people tend to focus on new things. BUT: ultimately i think your perception is not quite correct. The amount of enthusiasm and content created for Doom, and the amount of messages DW generates, on a daily basis, is simply astounding. A game this old isn't on everybody's radar, even for reasons of prejudice alone (my nephew wouldn't be interested), not to mention commercial interests always being behind new products, but the amount of people who are active with it despite of literally hundreds of alternatives is proof of its vitality. Doom stands completely alone, it's not trendy, and there's no social incentive to play it - and yet people find their way here every day. Sheer numbers don't tell everything. GraphicBleeder Posted January 18, 2021 Don't worry man. We are in no way a small or "dying" community. New stuff is being posted to Doomworld every day! And even place like r/Doom and the hundreds of Discord servers out there are still very active. This is still a thriving community. And about interest in the older games being less recognized, well don't worry! I think most new members were brought in by games like Doom 4 and Doom Eternal. But most of the time they also discover love for the older games. So welcome to Doomworld man! Hope you have fun in our demon-killing community! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
