I've been playing DooM since the shareware release [I'm THAT old :-)] and there are many like me here that have also grown up and matured while still loving DooM. Our outlook and way of thinking will have changed accordingly as we matured. Therefore, the DooM community will have changed because of that.

 

Also, the collective knowledge and skill that the community has is much greater than it was 20 years ago, so the maturity and quality of much of the new content has also increased over the years.

 

So, yes, the community is not the same, but there is so much more experience around now that he community is much better for it.

Something I don't like is being forced to use openGL. Or at least telling me to use it.

I'm one of the few people that still use SkullTag(because of bots) and ZDoom(I only use GZDoom when a mod needs it). Don't ask why.

You should talk to @Doomkid as he's very much involved with the Multiplayer side of the Doom community and could easily help you join some active servers, play some Deathmatch and make new friends.

About a decade ago or more, I was regularly on any Skulltag server I could find that was hosting Armageddon v2.5. I've never heard of any of the other ones OP mentions, but that's probably cause I found one thing I liked and stuck to it. It was the best thing ever to me at that time. 

 

These days I'm regularly on any Zandronum server I can find that's hosting Complex Doom Invasion. Discovered it last year and I've been having a lot of fun playing it. Great stress relief. Server activity is up and down but there's usually someone playing (probably me), if you're in a server with runes you can just tank everything solo but it is quite a lot of fun with I'd say a minimum of 3-4 players.
