Is TNT MAP22: Habitat a joke/troll map?

Not as bad as Mount Pain but...that's another entire separate topic to discuss.

Unpopular opinion, but i actually think Mt. Pain is not that bad of a level. I actually like the later half of that level.

Calling it bad is an insult to bad maps. it misses too many marks, has unfinished stamped all over -it doesn't even look ready for beta, if it even got an alpha test-, was most likely going to be a sewer level (which is almost as bad in itself) and the gameplay is stupid (arch-vile teleporting to you in the middle of an open plain, hope you aren't pistol starting, a lot of the map playtime is a stupid tunnel maze). I don't get why giving a map a fully negative review is like a sin for some people.

Maps like chasm and Barrels O Fun definitely do NOT belong in the same tier as this piece of garbage map, You may hate their gimmicks but saying they are on the same tier of awfulness as habitat is a bold claim. Doesn't matter if the author does better maps either, this is a review of the map itself. Not a personal attack on the author, it is perfectly fine to make horrible maps.. and even release them; Everyone starts somewhere.

If it is, it's surprisingly decent for a joke map.

Still not my favorite map in TNT, mind you. There are better maps in the set. I'm only saying that Habitat is at least more playable as opposed to a lot of actual joke-/trollmaps.

IMHO, Habitat is actually one of the more interesting TNT maps, especially considering that it too was going for a semi-realistic/experimental style that most of the middle of TNT tends to have (Shipping/Respawning, Mill, Central Processing), not to mention that it goes for a more abstract feel similar to that exit portal in Lunar Mining Project.

I did a recent replay of TNT.  It's been one of my favorite iwads since I was a kid because I was wowed by how it tried to feel like a real place at the time.  I was so used to other (iwad) doom maps being cool and all, but then there was this little trailer with wheels and office buildings and crates on conveyor belts, Egyptian pyramids, and other things I wasn't used to seeing.  It was real mind blowing stuff at the time.  So that's my perspective as a kid who was wowed by the majesty of TNT really early on before it was even easy to have internet access or be exposed the modding community and all the opinions people had.  Just a pure innocent kid who thought Evilution was like a step up from everything I've seen before.

And I didn't dislike Habitat at the time and thought it was a decent map.

Here are the maps I didn't like too much:

I was actually not that big a fan of Human BBQ, Metal, Deepest Reaches, Mill, Final Call.

Human BBQ feels super thrown together and I didn't like the music.  I got lost on Metal and Deepest Reaches.  Mill was kinda cool but it dragged on.  Final Call had that confusing death trap that I didn't figure out until I was like 15 and knew from the internet you have to look at the torch colors.  Oh and Map 1 took me for ever to even get past when I was like 11 because I didn't realize that walking up to the exit door opened up that other area.  Probably took me weeks or months to realize, which feels like an eternity back then.

God I used to get lost in DooM levels back in the day, and have no way to look things up.  I figured everything out by just exploring for hours or weeks, or was it even months in some cases?

I lumped them in because of the "Youtuber celebrity effect", not because it's good/bad.

I used to hate Habitat, Chasm and Mount Pain, but later I realized, it's not that bad if you looked at them properly.

*cough* BigMacDavis *cough*

For a later level, the fact you can run straight to the exit in Habitat is pretty laughable. The flipside is that it's a breath of fresh air that you can run straight to the exit when you've just completed such a lengthy map before it.

I've never played through TNT in full but my impressions of Habitat were:

- Hmm weird BFG secret that reminds me of that blue room in The Chasm

- Water and toxic waste mixing

- Annoying tunnel area with lots of secret doors (?)

- Random open field that's a beginner's trap

  • 2 weeks later...

Habitat was a testing ground for interesting design solutions, but it was drowned in incompetence and ruined progression.

Also, in the map editor you can see one hidden drowned sector, with an unused switch. This leads to further considerations. Was there something else planned?

Most likely yes.

Habitat just screams unfinished and unpolished, and the fact that the player can even go straight to the exit at the beginning is just further proof of this. They must have had many plans for this map but never managed to bring them into existence, and they just tossed it in to fill the 32 slots after running out of time.

Food for thought: Given the opinion most players have on this map, the fact that you can skip straight to the exit may have been a feature, rather than a bug.

I personally love Mt. Pain 'cause of the music and because is though, it makes you strategize what you're going to do with your resources and health.

I don't like habitat that much, I mean, it could have been waaay better than it turned out to be. I agree, looks very unfinished.

Habitat is a pretty bad map but it's not significantly worse than other bad maps in TNT.
