How would you buff the pistol?

The pistol is the only weapon that becomes totally irrelevant as you progress through a wad.

I wouldn't make it too powerful because that would defeat it's point as a starting weapon. I would just make it perfectly accurate, that way it becomes a viable long range option that isn't as tedious as hammering m1 with the chaingun.

For a while I was tossing around the notion of making the pistol a lot stronger, more accurate, with slower firing... but then I realized that I'd effectively just be making another shotgun. So instead of that I'd go for something closer to what Supercharge does. Playing Ar Luminae with its integrated Supercharge mod was interesting. The pistol there was at its most useful thanks to the lack of damage variation, and the chaingun was powerful, but consumed ammo like candy.

I would change the pistol to 100% accurate at all times, it would shoot about 25-33% faster, and have an 8 to 12 bullet clip before a reload. The chaingun's maximum ammo would increase from 200/400 to 300/600, and it would fire a LOT faster, draining the ammo quickly, and it would have significantly reduced accuracy at longer range.

Make it actually shoot exactly where the crosshair is when holding down left mouse button instead of slightly off to the left and right.

I wish you could do something stupid with Vanilla DehackEd, like make it a three round burst. Or like what Marathon did and just have it be dual-wield able if you find another one. Or maybe give it a secondary fire thats powerful, but rare like the grenade launcher on the SMG in Half-Life.

However I'd probably go with what @xdarkmasterx said, however with the pistol not being as powerful as the vanilla chaingun, but still have the chaingun be extremely powerful and tear through ammo.

Keep it the same. I like the way a pistol start run generally plays out now with a hectic search for better weaponry if it's not provided right in front of you.

Three-shot, accurate controlled burst with a longer delay in-between, so it doesn't make the chaingun obsolete.

OR give it an "assassin" functionality: if shooting an enemy facing away from you at close range, give it a small chance of an instant kill, at least against some kinds of enemies. The rationale being that Doomguy can lift it and orient it easily to the neck/spine of former human and humanoid enemies. Of course the counterpoint being why wouldn't that work equally well with the SG/SSG....

Be able to fire it as fast as you can pull the trigger. Think of the Half-Life 2 pistol.

Exactly. Make it a properly semi-automatic weapon. Then it would actually be useful in close quarters, without treading on the shotgun's toes.

If it can't oneshot an imp I don't care enough to use it, but then it becomes stronger than the normal shotty. Keeping it worthless is better for the game balance, the chaingun exists after all.

I'm happy with it just shooting a bit faster and more accurately, like the Valiant and Eviternity pistols. I'm still gonna switch away permanently after 30 seconds when I find the first shotgun guy.

I consider either one of or some combination of the following:

-Shooting two hitscans at once instead of one

-Changing the Damage Ranges of the Hitscan (wish one could do this in Dehacked...)

-Increasing the Rate of Fire

-Explosive Bullet Puff (only a small explosion though; wish explosions could also be modified in Dehacked...)

I'm trying out something: Eviternity's fire rate (10 tics per shot) and perfect accuracy, and, combined with instant lowering of other weapons, instant raise speed. Essentially gives it a "quickdraw" property where you can snipe or finish off enemies (like pinkies if they don't die in two shotgun blasts).

Have the chaingun replace the pistol like the chainsaw replaces the (non-berserk) fist, then use slot 4 for something else entirely, maybe some sort of piercing weapon.

give it a 100% chance to stun enemies, but otherwise the same old pistol. would be useful on low-ammo maps where you've gotta avoid large groups of monsters

probably add a pistol upgrade powerup that carries across levels that replaces the stock pistol with something more powerful that can oneshot zombies and imps most of the time, with the pistol's accuracy

I would say make the pistol like it is in Eviternity (100% accurate and somewhat faster fire rate) and the chaingun like it is in Valiant (less accurate but have faster fire rate to mow down enemies) .

This is my favorite one. That's an awesome niche that no other weapons have.

This is something that's hard to do. The pistol is garbage right now, but buff it too much and it just becomes a fancy shotgun or chaingun.
I would say buff it's firing rate, and also buff chaingun's firing rate, while also increasing ammo to 300/600 like valiant.
This way, the pistol is actually sort of ok with things like zombies and imps, while the chaingun can actually hold it's own against some mid tier demons.

I think the chaingun is okay as it is. It's designed to be a low tier crowd-clearing weapon. If it were better, it would eat into the plasma rifle's role as a mid tier slayer.

Basically, any change to the Pistol will eat away at the Chaingun's territory -and all things considered, they are both pretty underpowered weapons. Buffing one up will require you to buff up the other too, otherwise you could just as well leave them both as they are.

The Chaingun is where the pistol should be at, in terms of real-life performance (minus the continuous ammo feeding), while the Pistol is, well... I seriously dunno what's up with that.  The closest equivalent would be to fire a real-life semi-auto gun by severely restraining your fire rate for no real reason, or shooting 1-bullet magazines only and having to reload between each shot, or using a double-action revolver with a really heavy trigger pull. In fact, if the pistol was made into a revolver, its rate of fire would make MUCH more sense.
