Oldschoolgeek32 Posted February 5, 2021 So recently, I've been playing a lot of call of duty (lmao) recently and when I came back to playtest wads by fellow mappers and wad authors, at first, it was alright, but then. I started observing my skill when it comes to playing doom and I seem to have a decrease in terms of like moving around, navigating + shooting. is this just something I'm just feeling or does modern shooters affect skills when going back to Doom?. I playtested a few wads and I started seeing that I wasn't really doing that well on UV, and even on HMP even on the smallest amounts of enemies so I am kind of worried Any response or advice would be gladly appreciated. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
D4NUK1 Posted February 5, 2021 For me it's the inverse, playing Classic Doom mess up how i play mostly 3D Shooters, trying to aim while moving and without using the 3D Y axis, it's hard to aim a certain enemies, or just miss up rockets or plasmas shoots. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
BoxY Posted February 5, 2021 I think it's more likely that you're just a little rusty, if I don't play Doom for a while I always play a bit sketchy for a couple of hours until I start feeling the groove again. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
ZeroTheEro Posted February 6, 2021 I don't notice any difference, but that might be because I suck at the modern shooters (multiplayer). for Counter-Strike however, I am consistent. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Pseudonaut Posted February 6, 2021 If you've lost skill, it's from lack of time spent playing Doom, not directly caused by playing other games. 18 hours ago, Oldschoolgeek32 said: I playtested a few wads and I started seeing that I wasn't really doing that well on UV, and even on HMP even on the smallest amounts of enemies so I am kind of worried Keep in mind that the difficulty of wads (UV or otherwise) varies by a lot. For example, I think Sunlust on HNTR is harder than Plutonia on UV, and many wads exist that are harder than Sunlust. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

It is because they have so different gamestyles that you get used to the other one. I was pretty ok Playing Quake 3, haven't played it much for a decade and now getting in they just Destroy me... 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
seed Posted February 6, 2021 It might just be because your brain switches to a different mode in order to adapt to the new environment. I notice this too when I go from Doom to a more modern shooter, it makes my brain split in half initially. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Yep, classic Doom plays so different to modern FPS that they're almost different genres. Doom is all about lightning fast movement and dodging projectiles, compared to modern FPS that emphasize aiming and prior positioning. They're very different skillsets, so if you try to play both the same way you'll have trouble. If you can separate both styles in your mind you should be able to avoid any loss of skill (apart from normal sloppiness from being away for long lengths of time). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
SilverMiner Posted February 6, 2021 Some time ago there was a gap when I didn't play Doom wads at all and I played Counter Strike: Source instead (I had deleted CSS cuz it makes my eyes hurt very badly) And it left a big positive effect on my Doom skills: now I play on UV easily in Zdoom. My skills in PrBoom+ still suck 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I agree, it does leave a lasting effect when switching from one game with different shooting mechanics (in this case, Modern Warfare 2, I've been playing it so much lol) to a game like Doom which has completely different mechanics. My guess would probably be is that through time and how the brain adapts, I should be able to get the hang of it and arrange my skill at Doom and maybe try to balance it out because I really want to enjoy both games :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
idbeholdME Posted February 7, 2021 Doesn't happen to me as I play Doom on keyboard only so playing newer shooters doesn't interfere in any way :P I have built up such a mechanical memory of playing Doom that I can go years without playing and jump back again at any time, playing like I never stopped playing I feel. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
