What's the hardest part of making a map for you?

Ideas in general, sounds generic but when I'm done making an idea in a map it will usually take me 3-4 days to get another idea for a room/area. 90% of the time I try to execute the idea it never looks the way I envision it and that makes me feel like I'm a bad mapper (Even though I have no quality standards cause I haven't made a map in my 4 1/2 years of being here)

Weapon progression is pretty annoying in Doom. Weapons are much more unbalanced, and there's no powerups like Quad Damage to help make weak weapons work. This leads to very predictable weapon progression most of the time, bad when you want to also include rewarding secrets, and weapons tend to be one of the best thing to have in secrets.

Balance. Making it hard, enjoyable and NOT frustrating can become frustrating in itself.

 

Also, trying to predict where a player would go without conditioning freedom of movement yet providing enough firepower to deal with whichever beasts might spawn or get triggered by something is not an easy task. So, yeah... balance.

The hardest map is getting back to momentum you had earlier while mapping. I could create like half the map in an hour, but then finish it in like a week's time.

It might be because I'm using DBX but auto-aligning textures never works like I want to. But hey, I'm still new to the whole doom mapping thing - it'll come with time, probably

Make sure you’re using lower or upper unpegged with certain walls, this will help align stuff

Being lazy and not having the motivation to work on it, and making sure everything is nice and fun really. I keep saying that I'm playing different megawads to get inspiration, when in reality I'm using it as an excuse to play diff wads and have fun while not working on my solo project.

Good monster placement. For me is hard to get the right placement of the monsters to make the map enjoyable. I tend to make not so crowded maps, so the result can be a map a little bit boring.
