Third Map's A Charm?

Recommended Posts

...probably not.

As first previewed over here:

Seems I took another spill on the learning curve, having only learned about maximum map size limits after I was already half-way through this one - roughly 30,000 x 33,000 units. That said, it runs fine on my 64-bit GZDoom port. Can't speak for any others though, so I would really appreciate some testers on this one before I put any finishing touches on it.

Built with Slade 3 on Vanilla/Doom II IWAD
Tested on GZDoom v4.5.0

MP3 Custom Music

No jumping or crouching required (no nodes either!)

Concept is fairly sparse, open, realistic(?) in nature. Took me about half an hour to do a speed-through test, but, as the size suggests it could take much longer to explore all the nooks and cranies - and I fear some of you may feel a little lost like my fist map...

The map is not compiled properly: lumps SSECTORS, SEGS and NODES are missing in the wad file. This means that the map cannot be played in the prboom sourceport (at least I couldn't). These lumps are apparently not needed to launch the map in gzdoom but they are required by less advanced sourceports.

To construct these lumps you just need to compile your map in a normal builder like Ultimate Doom Builder. Slade 3 is very outdated and inconvenient in this regard (but still the only tool to work with resources like music and textures though).

I compiled the map in my UDB for you here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/7kqducdb4wdiy53/Map03fix.zip?dl=0

I'm pretty sure that there are no blockmap issues here because of the large size and the map runs in prboom without any problems. Note that the map size bloated up by 3mbs because of the reject table.

Some time ago I also had some troubles in UDB when my map became too large but I somehow managed to resolve them in my situation (by adjusting some UDB parameters I think) so I can try to help if you will have problems with compiling the map in UDB.

Much obliged El Inferno!

Unfortunately I am unable to get any other port than GZDoom, or any other map builder than Slade 3 to work on my computer. Some combination of Win10, my Framework version, and my graphics (I can only run doom in SoftPoly mode). Before I started making maps again I spent about 2 weeks trying to get various combinations of other ports/builders (including UDB and Boom) to work without success.

Good to hear the map size doesn't seem to be a problem at least - especially considering much of the size is probably unnecessary. About a quarter of the map is unplayable space simply used to create "distant vistas" outside the game area. I'm sure there's a better way to do this, but I couldn't figure it out...

Edit -

I just tried to add a couple tweaks off of your fixed version but it seem Slade then removes all your fixes when I save it. Apparently there is a way to define nodes in Slade, but I guess you have to set all that up before starting the map...?

Anyways, I still managed to bloat the new file size up even further by adding some custom MP3 music (the track I tried to add to my first map) as D_Runnin was getting a little old. See OP for new version. Not sure of MP3 compatibility with prBoom?

MP3 is fine for prboom.

To build the nodes you need to install a nodebuilder (like ZenNode or ZDBSP) and set it up in Slade options (preferences -> Map Editor -> Node Builder). Maybe that will be enough (I never mapped in Slade and other builders have node builders already with them)

Speaking of errors, lately I keep getting a "403 Forbidden" every time I try to log into this site and need to reset my password. Anyone else having this problem?

Doomworld's been experiencing a DDoS attack for the past two weeks. The 403 error is helping keep it a little at bay. Everyone's been experiencing it.

Anyhoo, here's my playthrough :^P

Very thorough playthrough Bio!

I think this is the first time I got you to die on one of my maps, so that's a step in the right direction. You're right in noting, however, that a map this size could probably handle some more enemies - especially seeing as the physical dimensions don't seem to be hindering the gameplay as I initially feared.

Thanks again!

  • 3 weeks later...

Gah! The yellow key door again! I knew your playthrough would be helpful!

Too big seems to be the general consensus on this map - although I did receive this comment on another board "I like these sort of maps, where there's plenty of room and large areas even if there's not much to them ... MAP03 just blew me away - was not expecting that after the first two haha!" - so I guess there's a fringe market for maps like this out there. Next map should be a little more under control in that regard.

Thanks as always Clippy!
