Hexen: Wrath of Cronos

Recommended Posts

Has anybody played this mod? You can find it here: https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=35846

Some questions:
1) Does anybody know how to check the mod version you're playing? I'm not sure the version uploaded in moddb: https://www.moddb.com/games/hexen/downloads/wrathofcronosv22patched is the same as the one in the first link I've posted.

2) Does anybody know what is gold for? I saw a mention of shops, but I can't find it anything anywhere.  You find merchants in some levels that can sell you stuff.

Anyway, some instructions for people trying the mod:
1) Ensure the experience multiplier is set to 100 inside the options.
2) If you are missing the hud, use the button you've set to enlarge or minimize the hud until it appears.

Okay, I downloaded the mod from the website: https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=35846
Version: Wrath of Cronos RPG V3A

and I played with a Necromancer.

First of all, I want to say that, before starting, that I checked every skill of every class and I didn’t care at all about any of them, beside the necromancer. I was keen into the concept of summon and I was simply curious.

Okay, let’s start…

First, the good:

> I thought about giving a rating to the mod, but I feel like it wouldn’t do it justice. I don’t enjoy Hexen very much and I had never finished it, but this mod succeeded where Hexen failed. Making me interested enough to go deep and deep, hoping to discover how awesome my next ability would turn out to be. This in itself is a pretty good boon.

> The models of the summoned creatures are flawless. They can be confused for original content.

> Had no crashes or errors of any kind.

Now the bad:

1) The class is named Necromancer, but I would say that it has little to do with deaths. The name Summoner or Conjurer would be way better. Yes, it has curses and bones, but you never work with the bodies of the fallen enemies and use them to make a new “creature” out of them. As such, the name necromancer does not reflect reality.  In fact, I would say that I would have loved way more being able to, as I said, work on the bodies of fallen enemies, making a new npc out of them, and making them level up or improve them according.

2) Apart from three attributes, there is no data about some of the attributes (wisdom, intellect, charisma). Yes, what they are for is explained, but there is no data to understand what is the improvement you are going to get by levelling them.
This also concerns path: at the game’s beginning, you check the paths available for your classes, try to select one of them, but you are unable to. Bug? Are you missing something? Why can’t I select a path? Simple, because you have to wait level 15, but there is no informations about that.

3) The fact that monsters do level up with you, even if understandable, is disappointing.

For me this system is the worst system that could have been chosen: basically, you are not making the player feel rewarded at all for the progress he is making. Yes, he is making progress by levelling up skills, but does it feel good?

Starting the game should be a nightmare to the player, ettins should be scary. Everything should be scary.

Progression would mean that slowly but steadily you should be hitting these ettin with one less hit (generally), until you reach one hit (for melee classes), with some due exceptions.

I say due exceptions because ettins should start on a certain level and capped on that one, and a few should actually be stronger depending on locations (see last level) or vicinity to peculiar npcs\boss (e.g. the three bosses).

The same should be said for all other monsters.

4) There is no readme. Really, I would like to see some explanations about items, mechanics, but there is no readme. And a changelog too, to see what has changed between versions.

5) The way the stuff is currently uploaded is confusing for the player. An archive should be made with X folders, and every folder should have the name of the game you are planning to use the mod in, with the relevant files.

Last note: would I replay it? Currently, due to the monsters levelling up with you, I would not.

Thanks for the mod.

Some tips:

Remember, for anyone playing hexen, that there is a glitch in Gibbet. https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13361

There is a script in Wrath of Cronos that allows you to level up. Puke 921 <playernumber> <levels you want to gain>, enter that in the console and you will level up whoever you choose.
Found the info here: https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=35846&start=60#p696035
