Here's another one for you: I recently learned that way, way, WAY back in the Ye Olden Times there was an epidemic going on in Russia or some other slavic nation and some conspiracy nuts were blaming lightbulbs for giving people the disease. Lightbulbs and the use of electricity was still very new at the time, so the loony luddites were out in full-swing coming up with this kind of bullshit. It's amazing how big of a parallel this is for the current wave of boneheads proclaiming that the new 5G towers are what's causing people to contract COVID-19.

 

So when people aren't drudging up old debunked conspiracies from 7 years ago, they're just giving even older conspiracies a new paint job. The lack of originality among conspiracy whackjobs is simply outrageous, I say!

The obvious answer is to be a real person and have opinions on things of all scopes, and picking your battles. You can be the change you want to see in the world and just help save kittens in the local shelter WHILE having opinions about the national healthcare system, or regulating carcinogens in cheerios, or regulating carcinogens on Twitter. It's called "think globally, act locally" and it's funny to see people attack the mindset when they readily agree with it when you call it "start by cleaning your room".

The first quote by roadworx I posted and responded to was directed at someone I decided to stick up for.

 

Also on another topic, a repeat-offending hypocrite alleged that I screw goats, but not in words that nice.   Rather than dignify that baseless, crude accusation with a response then, I figured now was a good opportunity to merely point out his great potential to play a villain in a Spider-man porn parody, in a somewhat more civilized manner.   If people are for equality, how about applying standards equally?   Because the ongoing double standards are really getting old.   Probably making the religious right jealous.

Can we all agree that cancel culture itself should just go die in a hole? I mean on paper it sounds great right? A racist ass is being a racist ass, people bring light to his racist assery and he promptly gets fired as he should. This is fine, arguably even desirable. But then you have people getting canceled over things that aren't even that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things or things that may have happened years ago and they've changed since.

 

The problem with cancel culture is that when you get a bunch of people to bandwagon on the hate train against someone, the harm done to the person is disproportionate to the sin of the person and at worse, going against an innocent person just because someone somewhere decided, I hate this guy. Let me spread a lie saying that he is racist and get his life ruined.

 

To be clear, I'm not condoning dickback or hurtful or hateful behavior. But we need to realize that people can change. I'm sure if we rewind our lives, most of us will find at least one instance where we were being dickbags to someone, saying or doing something we have since come to regret. If a person in their teen ages act racist, for example, it is not justified at all but I feel it also isn't right for them to get canceled for it years later because there is a high chance that they regret that period of their lives. Finally I think a point can be made for disproportionate punishment. If someone makes an edgy and tasteless joke, we can hate on him and call him an absolute asshat. That is fine. But when you start to get their livelihoods permanently damaged or destroyed over that one moment of head-assery, can you really say that punishment fits the crime?

Yes, on this, I can definitely agree with, it is especially bad on the internet.

 

Because on the internet, no-one really gives a damn about you anymore once you did some dumb shit, or you turn into the mob's hanging sack. The way things can sometimes get is just insane, no forgiveness, no second chance, no nothing. Period. This is simply not sustainable.

 

And to an extent we have seen this here as well in cases such as Mark. How many years have passed since the drama surrounding him, and some people still love washing his laundry in public when given the chance? For me, that is just perfect proof people refuse to move on and forgive, and accept that people do change, sometimes a lot. But instead, they may go out of their way to make the said person as miserable as possible, permanently if they can.

 

Just looking at myself is well, proof enough for me that people change a lot. The mindset and views I had some 7-8yrs ago for instance? Let's just say it's a good thing I never had blogs or openly expressed them, because some of them bordered on extremism. And zero tolerance, no questions asked. I'm just so glad I got rid of that dumb shit, but rest assured, had I expressed them at the time, there would have still been attempts at cancelling me even now - despite having nothing to do with that nonsense anymore, and in spite of apologizing. Because some people just want to see you burn, and to them, you'll always be the same piece of trash you always were. They will never move on. Because they have no desire to, they revel in their own misery and that of other people.

 

Yes, people do dumb shit all the time, but many realize they were shit at some point and probably paid the price too. But that will make no difference if they get cancelled anyway, especially for something they did many years ago or back when they were kids/teenagers.

Anyway, I've seen the term "trans rights" and it always struck me as a bit nebulous. My question is, what are the rights that are being sought? Something outside the scope of existing anti-discrimination laws (in the U.S.)?

Since they said they weren't going to debate...

 

I think they're responding to the thread title. i.e. if conspiracy theorists make your brain hurt, try talking to them respectfully and figuring out why they believe what they believe. And I partially agree, though talking to a conspiracy theorist in good faith (except to validate the conspiracy theory) is basically impossible online.

Yet somehow this thread is still coherent to some extent. I think this thread derailed but in the same way IRL group conversation derail. Like how a group of friends would start talking and discussing about something and then the train of discussion shifts tracks and by the end of it, you realize that you started the conversation with talking about the latest soccer game and are now discussing Roman Legionnaire battlefield tactics.

 

It's not a bad thing though because normally I don't enjoy threads like this but this one has kept me coming back and interested in reading replies.
