Doom isn't the edgy game you think it is.

Also, if the next game isn't titled "The Dark Ages" or ends up being a terrible entry your name is going to age quite badly.

I highly doubt neither of these things will happen. Doom is such a good series, I can't possibly ever see a doom game at this moment be a flop.

Official trailer:

Looks like we're gonna meet multiple demons before they got transformed by hell. The video shows a Mancubus, Hell Knight. Oh, and the Slayer gets to control a mech.

Well, it’s official now. Looks like more Eternal, though the last 10 seconds or so show some new stuff! Looks fun enough, though a little bit like extended DLC for Eternal. Still probably a day 1 play for me!

Rather, the style is very similar, but will be darker.  The gameplay will be noticeably different.  It is clear that there will be synergy between melee attacks and firearms.  I hope the plot turns out to be a sequel, because it will be boring to see what we already know

I guess it’s hard to tell from an early trailer, but the overall art design and movement and snippets of combat we see very much appear to be like Eternal. Looks like just a natural evolution of Eternal to fit the new setting, but you can even see some stagger like moves reminiscent to how they work in Eternal and the gameplay design of the environments looks very similar. Hell looks like Eternal’s Hell, the general use of color and fog and environmental details is very similar to Eternal and TAG levels. Feels like this will just be a continuation of that design philosophy, kinda like The Ancient Gods 3 but set in the dark ages. But also hard to know for sure without extended gameplay snippets. Even the Eternal trailers, looking back, don’t 100% look like Eternal!

Probably either a brake or Quake 5.

And i do still think an expansion for Eternal with a different playable character would be cool.

I still think there's Earth places we could've visited like Egypt or something under Hell's influence and maybe more excuses for level design and new enemies like the Plasma Powered Revenant.

You'd play as an ARC soldier who'd obviously turn into a Possessed soldier by the end.

If TDA is the end of the Slayer saga, wonder if that also means "if there ever is another Doom, we'd have to reinvent the series again" since the Doomslayer has a strong brand now.

Feel like you'd need at least some late project based on the Slayer formula to coexist with the new "out of field" Doom thing.

"Here's a Doom 6 where the Slayer is totally back and also a Doom game with a whole different direction, like a follow up to Doom 3".

Also, an interesting proposal for another turn based Doom:

If they make another one like DRPG, i like to think they should "go Shin Megami Tensei" with the demon designs.

To the point it's a direct influence, whether it's id hiring an artist from the series or at least have some of their artists looking up the coolest designs and cherrypicking out of the many demons in SMT.

Specially the more abstract/creative/weirder ones with weird anatomy and symbolism, along with the religious references they haven't done.

One reason for this is because Doom has yet to tackle on stuff like the deadly sins or layers of Hell, so imagine if a Doom game that tried to be more religious reference based also had more surreal designs (As opposed to DE focusing mostly on sci-fi/fantasy elements with lore and maybe a bit beyond the surrealism potential that i think existed in classic Doom and some D3 demons).

And turn based formula could work because with "real time" or stuff like Glory Kills, it'd be weird to make certain surreal designs work like that.

But also because of my mindset of "Doom can go through different skins".

But imagine Bosch type weird designs and you still get to shotgun blast them.

Well another doom game.  We heard about a "female" slayer and Chutlu Hell from Hugo.  So there is story to be told AFTER Eternal when the slayer went to sleep.

Or TDA Part 2 (the second age) and so on.  More doom = me happy.

But i still want Quake and Wolfenstein 3. I hope Machine Games is working on both.

I still want them to do a new single player focused entry to the Quake series that goes back to the Lovecraftian roots of the first game. I'm hopeful that's something they'll be able to do after The Dark Ages.

I would love to see this too.

I really like the vibe of the OG Doom and Quake (and Hexen!) and 2016 Doom and would love to see anything like that again. I’d also love to see a non-retro shooter do levels like the 90s games, where it’s not arena based and you have a map filled with monsters who can in-fight and you can run away from and use them against each other. A mix of modern and retro. Although it’s 8 years old now and was mostly arena based, Doom 2016 did that mix of retro and modern styles so well. Haven’t seen anything quiiiittteee like it since.

Hell yeah! DOOM: The Dark Ages!

First of, I still have to check how the end of DOOM 2016 and the beginnings of DOOM Eternal make sense, because I've played and finished both campaigns (albeit I didn't play The Ancient Gods expansion, so it may be is told there)

I am excited for DOOM: The Dark Ages and I hope I won't be too broke when it will come out or be available on pre-order. I missed on DOOM: Eternal for so long because I loved it so much I finished it in less than a week of span time. Where I pre-ordered DOOM 2016 and finished it only in end of 2022 or start of 2023. Let's say at that time I wasn't as sharp in reflexes as now, I tried the arena arcade mode thing in Nightmare and did fairly well, I had fun.

TDA looks more early demonic science-fantasy if that makes sense, a bit like Amuscaria's TC WAD "HellForged" which is my favourite WAD by a mile. And I'm looking forward to it. I personally like the more "technical speed" pace of Eternal over 2016's and maybe it has to do that it has less corridor-y level designs 2016 borrowed slightly from DOOM 3, and more open areas and "bigger arenas" to fight that I loved about DOOM 1993 and DOOM II, even if the more "grounded" designs of DOOM 2016's human bases that reminded me of the first episode of DOOM 1993 that is my favourite design-wise.

Anyways, I feel like I'm going everywhere and nowhere (the hyped ~ADHD'd alien strikes again?). So I want to play that game, I love the more dark fantasy, medieval themed demonic tech and I loved Eternal's gameplay about Dances of Massacre.

So...

As for a potential DOOM Gal, I really want ID Software to show the moffos from the DOOM: Annihilation disaster what they can do with a "female DOOM Guy". Therefore, DOOM Gal shouldn't have recent female characters annoying tropes. And she should be stated she's "the DOOM Gal" and not keep a secret. And she shouldn't even try to replace the Slayer, but complement or support him. I saw an artwork for the DOOM Gal (I think it was just their ultra-buff female OC in the Praetor Armour, but still) and that could be cool. She could portray another path the DOOM Slayer could have taken if he weren't committed as much. Like being corrupted but managing the get her humanity take over her demonic side back? Like, she saw the corpse of Daisy or something and learned later that the DOOM Slayer's still around? I don't know, just a fangirl doing some stupid thought.

And that's only if said DOOM Gal would be put in, which I don't think it will. I don't even think it would be that interesting to begin with. Especially given those modern trends. Could be a DLC ? We had HOOFSlayer, so whatever.

... Or it could just be Isabelle.

Also, the guitar riff skull weapon video meme is dope. And in, like, less than a day after release xD

I could imagine that being a controversial addition.

I see the vision, its just that I feel like for the main playerbase/fanbase it'd ruffle some feathers of others sadly.
and TDA is gonna be peak fs.

As far as I know, what happened between 2016 and Eternal is just... not covered at all. Not even in the readable lore bits of either game. All we know for sure is that the Slayer escaped out of Hell, upgraded his suit, and got his hands on a castle-spaceship to use as a base of operations. No idea why they didn't think it worth covering at all. I think we can assume that whatever happened, it was appropriately badass/epic/metal/[insert preferred superlative here].

Well, all we can know for sure is that Dr. Hayden lost 60% of his body volume during that time, right? :}

it kinda makes me wonder if they have a full grasp on what story they want to tell with these games, but maybe I'm illiterate and shit flies over my head idk

Yes. It was just me ranting non-sense for a full paragraph, don't worry.

AH! THE REAL THING I WANTED TO SAY ON TDA!! Will there be a competent level editor? Snapmap was okay-ish (albeit hugely lackluster in flexibility and assets in my opinion) and afaik Eternal didn't have anything?

no worries, i feel that.

I hope we do get something that's more in-depth in TDA when it comes to a level editor. I fucking love the aesthetic TDA has from what we've seen, and it'd be so cool to see the things people can expand upon that with a well-made level editor.
