To me, I kinda feel Sigil is tryna do its own thing. It's a much more varied episode when compared to the OG Ultimate Doom ones. Canonical or not, Sigil is tons of fun regardless. i don't know what 'everything Romero says' (i doubt i know even fraction of a per cent of what he's said about anything) you're talking about, i was talking exactly about what he said regarding Si666il. If you want to know what i think about something particular Romero said, i'll be happy to answer. But neither do i take everything 'a community' says seriously, particularly because communities don't even have a voice. Community voices are ever only the voice of certain members of the community who, rightly or wrongly, are considered by some, often especially themselves, to represent the community. Thanks for the historical perspective - that's actually interesting and funny. Yeah, i only remember reading some threads after Si666il had come out, and vaguelly what some people - can't even remember who, i wasn't active here at the time - said. Some complaining, but i think much much more happy voices anyway so... :) Also people tend to forget that Si666il is actually 18 maps (i think). But i think also that a Megawad could be an episode in length. Edited March 11, 2021 by dei_eldren 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tanksy Posted March 11, 2021 I think Sigil is pretty meh to be honest, much like Thy Flesh Consumed it just messes up continuity of the original episodes and comes off pretty random. I'd have received it better if it was marketed just like any other wad instead of being something canon that happened somehow in the doorway/teleporter moment in-between Doom 1 and 2. Spoiler , and if it wasn't also a classic 'romero cash-grab' 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Plot of Doom E6 when it comes out Doomguy: *grumble grumble* well it’s finally time to go save Earth I hope I didn’t waste too much time with all those stupid detours, time to finally go through the portal and... *puts hand in pocket* MEANWHILE IN HELL [zoom to Doomguy’s wallet sitting on a table somewhere] “FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCKKKKK” Rip and tear 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
P41R47 Posted March 11, 2021 New episode changes game name and TITLEPIC name, and thus its not anymore Doom. Doom =titlepic= Doom Ultimate Doom (Doom + TFC) =Titlepic= ULTIMATE Doom Sigil (Doom+TFC+Sigil) =titlepic= Sigil So yes, Romero changed his game to another thing :P 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
DoomGater Posted March 14, 2021 By the way. Doom is the only game, where you get 3/5 of the game legally for free: E1 = Shareware available free of charge E2 = regular episode, included in commercial registered DOOM release E3 = regular episode, included in commercial registered DOOM release E4 = Ultimate DOOM Addon Episode, available f.o.c. E5 = Si6iL, also available f.o.c. This makes three out of five available for free :-) Why did they -from Doom2 on- change this? Where are the free official addons for Doom2, for Final Doom and for the Masterlevels? Not to mention any free goodiel for the newer Doom variants.... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Gez Posted March 14, 2021 The patch to upgrade Registered Doom (3 episodes) to Ultimate Doom (4 episodes) is free. So that makes the fourth episode technically free, but only to those who paid for the game in the first place. Likewise for SIGIL, it's a free download but you need the full game to play it, it won't work with the shareware version. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

The original 1.0 release had only 377 entities out of 3940 total in the current (and supposedly final) version. That's over 90% of the game being made of content added by free updates. Likewise, its soundtrack had only five themes at release, compared to 89 now, so 84 "free" tracks. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

My bad this time, never thought about this one. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

In fact, it could work with the shareware. It needs some tweak, but is doable. Changing the name of the maps to E1 and the sloth of the secret exit map from M6 to M3 would make it work with the shareware as Sigil M8 has a linedef exit and not a hardcoded bossaction. Gez Posted March 14, 2021 I'll also note that likewise, the patch to update Registered Heretic to Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders is free. And Heretic SOTSR adds two new episodes (didn't have to wait 23 years for a unofficial add-on to get to that), and with the first episode being distributed as shareware, that gives Heretic the same 3/5 ratio. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dweller Dark Posted March 14, 2021 I almost always play with Si6il, but it does feel more like a DLC/expansion type of thing. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kute Posted March 15, 2021 This is one of those things I feel are completely up to the individual player. If you want to think of it as canon act5, well by all means. But John Romero isn't the king of doom or something, he was just a pivotal employee who worked on the series. It's by no means His though. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Since looong time there is an official patch available, which converts Registered Doom (with 3 Episodes) into Ultimate Doom.http://doomgate.de/files/id/doom/19_udpat.exe BTW, also available here:https://www.doomworld.com/classicdoom/info/patches.php Edited March 15, 2021 by DoomGater added DW link 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Oh yes, thanks for the attempt of rectification. But SOTSR has even six episodes. E6 consists of DM maps only and can only be accessed by cheating ('engage6x') So it s 3/5 plus a stinker.
