QuaketallicA Posted March 21, 2021 I was replaying Doom 64 Retribution mod yesterday, and while I love Aubrey Hodges' version of the Doom theme, the actual soundtrack in the levels has always felt kind of...well, frankly non-existent. A couple discordant notes or sounds here and there makes for great ambience and all, but it doesn't make up for actual music imo. This was especially apparent by the time I reached "Even Simpler." Seeing what is basically Map 07 and not hearing Shawn's Got the Shotgun just feels wrong. The lack of a proper ost is why I always land up feeling kind of bored whenever I play Doom 64, in spite of perfectly decent, even above average level design. I remember hearing in a podcast Hodges did somewhat recently that the PS Doom ost was originally going to be like the Bobby Prince one, but rather than having really low-quality rock (in order to fit in technical limitations) he went for these ambient noises that kept the same creepy vibe without eating up too much space. Obviously, he kept the same style for Doom 64. But since we don't have to worry about any such limitations anymore, what if Doom 64 had a custom ost more like Doom 1 and 2's? Maybe like a darker version of Bobby Prince's style, more keeping in with the Doom 64 intro, and still retaining the horror aesthetic of D64's ambience, but something that really feels like actual music. Has anyone already done something like this? If not, would you like to hear it? Or do you prefer the creepy noises and no traditional music? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
SF. Posted March 21, 2021 (edited) Doom 64 for Doom II's soundtrack, there's your answer https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/d64d2 Edited March 21, 2021 by paturn 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Eurisko Posted March 21, 2021 The Aubrey Hodges level music is more like soundscapes than anything else, PSX doom is very similar. The opening music is brilliant though. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
molecicco Posted March 21, 2021 (edited) What a coincidence. You might want to try out this mod: https://www.moddb.com/mods/doom-ce It uses Retribution as a base but it also has a feature where it plays the D644D2 soundtrack first and then fades into Aubrey Hodges soundtrack.
