I deleted the exit sign for a level and now there is a textured pit. (Doom Builder 2)

Recommended Posts

So I decided to switch to doom builder 2 since that allows me to edit official wads, but now There is a pit where the first exit sign was in e1m1 for ultimate doom. Can someone help me with this? If you need, I can post a video on it.

Ok, lot's of stuff to unpack here.

  1. You say you "switched to Doom Builder 2".  What did you switch from, and why?  Also, Doom Builder 2 is very old - check out Ultimate Doom Builder or Doom Builder X for modern versions
  2. You shouldn't really be editing official wads.  Not only is it illegal to distribute any maps based on IWAD contents, but you run the risk of messing you game up.  Really you should only be editing custom wads
  3. When you say "a pit", what do you mean?  Like a sector that is lowered further than the surrounding floor?  Is it the same size as the Exit sign?  We'll need more information to diagnose what your problem is.

Where have you seen this stated? If that were true then there would be a lot of projects in big trouble. I always thought it was a gray area and not a real problem so long as the edited levels still require the IWAD to correctly run.

Don't do this, it screws up your official WADs, and there's no reason to do that. There is pretty much no reason to ever edit the official IWADs. If you want to learn, it's better to build a level from scratch than to start deleting parts from official maps and changing them.

When you simply hit "delete" on a sector which is inside another sector, the editor interprets that as a command to change that sector from playable space into void space, like the walls. There will be no texture on the walls of that new void space (except the orange "missing texture" texture in the editor's 3D mode). What you are probably trying to do  is to make the exit sign go away. For that you would need to either join it with the surrounding other sector, or else raise the ceiling of the exit sector sign so that it is flush with the ceiling of the rest of the surrounding sector, thus hiding it.

To understand how to do this, read or watch basic tutorials on how to make maps, this forum has a whole tutorial section. You don't need to follow the lessons step by step, but you should at least read these:

EDIT: I forgot that I actually offered this same tutorial as advice to you 20 days ago in your last thread.

I don’t know how to explain. I have decided to give up, it’s not worth it.

Well this seems to be the real problem here, I could never figure out why people tend to give up when someone is simply trying to help.

Welp, I realized I have been an idiot once again. I figured out a solution but it is so embarrassing I don’t even want to say what it was.

You had a thread about this very same thing back in February. Maybe start from the beginning and like Stabbey posted, go through some tutorials.

That's great that you didn't give up and you figured out a solution! Good job.

Now, don't be embarrassed to explain what you did. You're just starting your mapping journey, and you're learning. As such, it is completely reasonable that you may have done something silly that a more experienced mapper would not have done. Therefore, this is the perfect time to explain how you did things, even if you think it's embarrassing because it's simple or wrong or overly complicated. I can virtually guarantee you that 99% of the people here will not laugh at you, even if what you did was wrong. In fact, if there is a better/more efficient alternative (or even just another possibility that's equally good) to what you did, they will most likely tell you. In that way, you will learn something that you didn't know before.

And don't forget this: all of those more experienced people used to be where you are now.

This is truth, and explaining what the issue is might help another person with a similar issue in the future.

Thank you for your kindness!: so what I did was I forgot how to use shift then scroll up to get rid of the exit sign. So that’s really it.
