he'll probably consider the relativistic effects of the moving trains too.

Darn. I was going to ask him how many more Barons of Hell he would've added to Perfect Hatred if he had felt a bit more evil. TBH, I felt that the level was lacking in Barons at only 12 on UV.

I was disappointed to find there was a room full of imps in the secret lava staircase leading to the starting point. Why not make them Barons?

Agreed. Plus the starting shotgunners should have been Barons.

...Actually that would make the beginning of the level QUITE interesting..

Judging by the last few posts, I should've asked "What does the Venn Diagram of Doom players and masochists look like?"

Ah, but you make the mistake of thinking I'm trapped in E4M2 with them. They're trapped in E4M2 with me!

I want more barons to kill. It's sadism, not masochism.

Sorry.

have you stayed at id after Quake got released would there have been a chance to see a Doom follow up being developed under the Quake game engine at some point in those years or would have the game deserved the long break that it was given?

@Soundblock@Maximum Matt Romero has already finished answering the questions, and the answers will be in the next issue of the WADazine. You are a bit too late.

Nah that's cool  man, I can amuse myself thinking up more important questions to ask the man if ever I meet him...

  • If you cut your hair, would you lose your powers?
  • Who would win in a fight, Tom Hall or Sandy Petersen?
  • Why haven't you had the directors of the Doom movies assassinated yet?
  • E1M7 bruh, amirite??

Based on this page, I assume it will be Issue #11?

A little late now, but did anyone ask or know much about the E5M1 map fragment in the Doom resources he released?    Looks like his E1 style and lighting but could have been someone else imitating his style.    I'm guessing the possibility of a 5th episode in Ultimate was thought about maybe?

My question for mr. Romero is this: Will you ever make a unofficial sixth episode for Doom 1? If so what would the theme be and will be better or harder then Sigil? Also what are your tips for new mapper like myself?

Wait, there is a E5M1?!? One that is not from SIGIL, I mean?

Holy moly! Doing research on my end, I stumbled upon Doom: The Lost Episode, which not only makes that E5M1 playable but also brings the console-exclusive maps to PC! But the most shocking to me is that it was apparently released... in 2009. This is amazing! How the hell did I manage to go this long without ever hearing about this?!? :o

If you're talking about the first map listed there as Doom v0.5 map 1.   That's not it.   That's a heavy edit of Tom Hall's E1M1 from the Doom Alpha version 0.5 before it was replaced by Romero's E1M1.   I did incorporate the E5M1 fragment into the Frankenmap map08 of this.  Or E1M8/E4M8 of this.

One thing that made it a pain to do anything with was as soon as you drag or copy and paste the E5M1 fragment, a bunch of older sectors and linedefs somehow still in there replace how it first appears and screws it all up, so I had to go fixing them all to how it looked before copying.

I still recommend that Lost Episode though.

@Gokuma Yeah, I saw that it was not supposed to be E5M1, but I still like to refer to it as such.

It is shorter than "Doom 0.5 map 1" and also because it has 5 and 1 in the name! :P

What compiler did you use to build the IDSETUP programs? I'm pretty sure that you used Borland C++, but don't know what version exactly.

Other question, the pre-release version of Doom press release had this statement:

Quote

The game runs fine on a 386sx, and on a 486/33, we're talking 35 frames per second, fully texture-mapped at normal detail, for a large area of the screen.

The game runs pretty bad on 386SX processors (that's why I created FastDoom) and a 486DX@33 isn't fast enough to get 35 fps stable, were you testing Doom on 386SX or 386DX systems? Were you expecting some optimization process to make the game run faster/smoother in the final stages of the developing process? Or was added some functionality that made game slower between the pre-release and the final release version?

Ask John Romero what he thinks of Necromancers while you're at it.

Haha I'm kidding. However the opportunity to ask John Romero a question to be possibly answered in the Doom Master Wadazone has long past.
