I've been thinking for a while about starting a MIDI pack for Thy Flesh Consumed, and even wrote a MIDI intended for E4M1, and started one for the text screen. Then I realized that other people are much better than me at making MIDIs, and I thought it would be better to start a community project, using the MIDI I already have as a springboard.

The issue with that is, I'm not a super experienced Doomer, I'm very new to the community, and it seems likely that either Doomkid, Peter, Jimmy, or someone else more established will start such a project and run it far better than I ever could. When I mentioned the project in the NRFTL thread, it was also pointed out that if I were to do a TFC MIDI pack, I might as well replace all of the reused tracks in Ultimate Doom, which seems like a much more ambitious and time-consuming project.

So what do you think? Should I start this project (if you want a sample of my previous work, all of my Doom MIDIs are here), or let someone else do it?  If you think it's a good idea, should it just be for Thy Flesh Consumed, all of the reused Ultimate Doom tracks, or the whole of Ultimate Doom?

Usually, if a group of composers make a midi pack, they make own midis for each level. I think if Doomkid's MID. the way id did will be successful, there will possibly be another pack for UD.

For me, a lot of the reused music in TFC is equally iconic as where it was first used in the earlier episodes. I hear Deep Into the Code and I'm thinking of Sever the Wicked, not Pandemonium for example. Sign of Evil is as inextricably linked to Hell Beneath as it is to Phobos Anomaly for me, and so on

That said, this is a cool idea and someone should definitely do it.

That's what I was thinking too. If Doomkid has plans for that I don't want to mess them up because he'd make a way better project leader.

I mean, the same was true of Plutonia. "Nobody Told Me About Id" is associated with Go 2 It as much as Tower of Babel, "Sweet Little Dead Bunny" is associated with Hunted more than the ending of Inferno, etc.

I'd like to see what the Heretic pack did; replacements for the repeated levels only, so that every level has a unique theme. However due to the nature of E4's music and how its hardcoded to use the midis from the other episodes, you'd need two versions, one for vanilla and one for advanced ports.

That would have been my plan. Though I might need to do some research on the advanced ports.

I would definitely suggest getting in touch with Doomkid and the others, see if they already have plans for this kind of thing. Would love to see another one of these projects!

Might as well just ping them then: @Doomkid @Peter do you have any plans to make/run a community project an Ultimate Doom or Thy Flesh Consumed MIDI pack at some point? I had plans myself but you would both be way better at it than me and I'd like to call dibs on E4M1.

You should go ahead with it! I haven’t got anything underway so I feel it’d be wrong of me to barge in and take the reigns. A full replacement gets my vote, and I’d happily compose something for such a project.

It looks like the majority is favoring me doing either all reused tracks in Ultimate Doom or all of the tracks.

For reference, here is the scale of each of the ideas in the poll:

  • Thy Flesh Consumed: 12 tracks (9 maps in TFC, D_INTER, D_VICTOR, D_INTRO)
  • All reused MIDIs: 16-22 tracks (9 maps in TFC, 5 MIDIs duplicated 7 times (13 duplicates))
  • All of Ultimate Doom: 40 tracks (36 maps, D_INTER, D_VICTOR, D_INTRO, D_BUNNY)

Given that, I think a good idea would be to set a goal of all of Ultimate Doom but try to make sure that the 13 duplicate MIDIs are taken first, then the TFC MIDIs, so hopefully we can have those as interim goals in case the thing isn't able to be finished.

Assuming nothing comes up to obstruct it (e.g. Peter saying he already has plans), I'm hoping to start the project this weekend!
