I'm Ivan Stanton (northivanastan), and I like to make MIDIs. Doom is a great game, we can all agree on that. It has a great soundtrack, too, but it could be better; many tracks fit the same mold, and a lot of its later levels, including the entirety of the bonus episode Thy Flesh Consumed, reuse MIDIs from previous levels. A while ago I started working on a Thy Flesh Consumed MIDI Pack, but I realized that it would be better to start a community project, and after discussing it with others on the forums I decided to expand the scope to a full Ultimate Doom MIDI pack, in the vein of Doomkid's "MID the way id Did." Introducing the Ultimate MIDI Pack (or Ultimate MIDI Pack, or UltiMIDI) - a full replacement for the soundtrack of The Ultimate Doom, including unique tracks for all 36 maps. In the above download you will find all of the MIDI files and three WADs - ultimidi.wad (the full version, including four kinds of MAPINFO for episode 4 music); uldupmid.wad (just the duplicate tracks and MAPINFO); and tfcmidi.wad (episode 4 tracks for vanilla Doom). In addition to being a great way to play Doom, I hope this MIDI pack will provide a variety of high-quality MIDIs to be used in maps of all shapes, sizes, and styles. To facilitate this, the entire pack has been released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license, which allows reuse with credit and remixing under the same license. Enjoy! Uploads to OpenGameArt (copyright-friendly MIDIs), Bandcamp, and YouTube (video with rendered MIDIs) are coming soon, pending Roland SC-88 recordings by @DCG Retrowave . I'm Ivan Stanton (northivanastan), and I like to make MIDIs. A while ago I started working on a Thy Flesh Consumed MIDI Pack, but I realized that it would be better to start a community project, and after discussing it with others on the forums I decided to expand the scope to a full Ultimate Doom MIDI pack, in the vein of Doomkid's "MID the way id Did," inspired by Bobby Prince, but unique in its own way. I will be calling it "The Ultimate MIDI Pack" for now. I'd love some help running this from others who are more experienced running community projects and making MIDIs, since I am new to the community and not very experienced myself. If you'd like to see some of my previous MIDIs, please give my Creative Works thread more attention. There will be three milestones leading into the final goal: Milestone 1: Replacements for all duplicated MIDIs in registered Doom. There are 15 duplicates of 7 MIDIs in registered Doom, and their slots will be open from the beginning. Milestone 1 is "complete" once enough MIDIs have been created for all tracks in the first three episodes to be unique (at least 8). Milestone 2: A Thy Flesh Consumed MIDI pack. Once Milestone 1 is complete, all of the maps in Thy Flesh Consumed as well as D_INTRO and D_VICTOR will become open for new MIDIs. I have already made something for E4M1. Milestone 3: A complete Ultimate Doom MIDI replacement. After (nearly) all of the Milestone 2 slots are taken, the remaining 14 MIDI slots (those whose tracks were originally unique to specific levels) will be opened. The idea of the milestones was that if the project is never finished, we will still have produced something useful. After the MIDIs for each milestone are complete I will release a work-in-progress version. The final version will have one WAD replacing the MIDIs in the first three episodes, one WAD replacing the MIDIs reused in Thy Flesh Consumed, and one or more complete packs for advanced ports where that is feasible. The final due date for this all MIDIs is 2021-06-20. Good luck! If you still want to make new MIDIs, try to make ones based on Tech Gone Bad and Phobos Mission Control (John Romero's E1M4B,8B) All MIDI slots: E1M1 Hangar - "Stricken Commission" by Bloo Note: This track is three seconds short of the required 90 seconds, but I allowed it because Hangar is a really short map. Ideas: Short introductory track. A long journey lies ahead. E1M2 Nuclear Plant - "Dread Factory" by MFG38, references "The Imp's Song" by Bobby Prince Ideas: As you wander through the mazelike corridors of the old UAC plant, you wonder - what the Hell happened here? I'd give this just a tad more energy than the original track, but keep it downtempo. E1M3 Toxin Refinery - "Toxic Sludge" by chilpillwill Note: STILES does have a WIP track for E1M3, but has not claimed it so as to allow others who have expressed interest to try it themselves. NeilJohnRips, Gustavo6046, TelamonLivesOn also expressed interest. Ideas: The mystery deepens and the danger intensifies. A dark or ambient style track that puts the player on edge. E1M4 Command Control - "Happy Destruction" by Bloo Ideas: Fight your way through the old base, killing the zombies that stand in your path. You're starting to enjoy this. E1M4B Phobos Mission Control - STRETCH GOAL E1M5 Phobos Lab - "They Are Going to Suspend You" by TrialD, remix of "They Are Going to Get You" and "Suspense" by Bobby Prince Ideas: Terrible secrets are kept here, and the demons will stop at nothing to prevent you from discovering them. E1M6 Central Processing - "Behind Closed Doors" by Bloo Ideas: A longer track to keep the player from being bored as they explore the maze that is this map. But don't forget that this map has some great action too. E1M7 Computer Station - "Trouble in Sight" by Bloo Ideas: A place where massive supercomputers silently work towards a mysterious goal - certainly not a benevolent one. A dark electronic tune might be suitable. E1M8 Phobos Anomaly - "Escaping the Darkness" by Myrgharok (TheUltimateDoomer666) Ideas: Something feels deeply wrong about this building... E1M8B Tech Gone Bad - STRETCH GOAL E1M9 Military Base - "You're Winner" by Lippeth Ideas: "Congratulations, you found the secret!" E1M10 Sewers - Claimed by Cammy E2M1 Deimos Anomaly - "Pagliacci's Going to Town" by TrialD E2M2 Containment Area - "Hall of Wandering Spirits" by Myrgharok (TheUltimateDoomer666) E2M3 Refinery - "Good Luck" by Bloo Note: This MIDI was submitted for no map in particular, but I thought it would fit best for E2M3. If you have a better idea for this map's MIDI, you are free to submit it. Previously claimed by Doomkid. Ideas: A tech-base being reclaimed by the natural landscape it was once used to exploit. E2M4 Deimos Lab - "Lost in the Abstraction" by Keagan Dunn (Dunn and Dunn), inspired by "They're Going to Get You" by Bobby Prince Note: Help with editing was provided by Ivan Stanton (northivanastan). Ideas: This isn't the same UAC Deimos Laboratory you remember. No human could have possibly built this... E2M5 Command Center - "Rat Men's Station" by ZeMystic Ideas: The old UAC lunar command center is now the command center of the demonic invasion, and you no longer recognize it. Doesn't matter who's in charge, you have no qualms with blowing up this awful place. E2M6 Halls of the Damned - "A Search for the Soul" by Xulgonoth Ideas: Dark and deadly, with traps around every corner. The chances of getting out alive appear slim. E2M7 Spawning Vats - "World of No Sorrow" by TrialD Ideas: The ruins of this UAC base look almost like a demonic temple. What kinds of strange experiments were going on here? E2M8 Tower of Babel - "Dethrone the Tyrant" by Manniacc Ideas: The lair of your greatest adversary - the Cyberdemon. One wrong move and you're toast. E2M9 Fortress of Mystery - "Cookie Fangs" by Cammy Ideas: Well, it's a fortress and it's mysterious. Just sit back and watch the monsters kill each other. E3M1 Hell Keep - "Unknown Realm" by Palitoman Ideas: You've already died and gone to Hell, yet somehow you doubt that you can survive in this place. E3M2 Slough of Despair - "Swamp Ass" by ZeMystic Ideas: The landscape of this corner of Hell may look natural, but every rock was intentionally placed to oppress and intimidate you. E3M3 Pandemonium - "Eclectic Death" (WIP) by Peccatum Mihzamiz Ideas: A strange place, whose warped architecture defies all explanation. You don't have much time to think about it, though; nothing can stop your march towards the center of Hell. E3M4 House of Pain - "Siege Mentality" by NeilJohnRips Note: Bobby "lolmcswagger" sent in a WIP version shortly before the deadline passed. Ideas: It's the greatest challenge yet, but you're still confident. E3M5 Unholy Cathedral - "Forgiven Heretic" by McJerb Ideas: Some unholy rituals and incantations are probably conducted here. E3M6 Mt. Erebus - "On A Sea of Lava" by Myrgharok (TheUltimateDoomer666) Ideas: It's one of Hell's greatest landmarks. Fight for your life! E3M7 Limbo - "No More History" by Cammy Ideas: The final circle of hell is empty, painful, and induces madness in those who enter it. E3M8 Dis - "Mother of All Doom" by Myrgharok (TheUltimateDoomer666) Ideas: The one behind it all turns out not to be quite who you expected. E3M9 Warrens - "Mouth for Secrets" by northivanastan, remix of Untitled (Hell Keep) and Hiding the Secrets E4M1 Hell Beneath - "Desolation" by northivanastan E4M2 Perfect Hatred - "A Compact Hell" by Sego E4M3 Sever the Wicked - "Ant Farm Melee" by leejacksonaudio Note: Was "Good Luck" before that track moved to E2M3. Ideas: A lively tune that propels the gameplay forward. This is a pretty action-packed map, in my opinion. But also make sure there are some less action-packed sections so it won't get boring after ten minutes. E4M4 Unruly Evil - "Vitamin B6" by leejacksonaudio, inspired by Anton Bruckner's 6th Symphony Note: Lee Jackson would like to emphasize that he is open to feedback on this and will fix issues that are brought up. Ideas: A short-ish (2-3 minutes) and ambient track. E4M5 They Will Repent - "Let the Wicked Be No More" by Lippeth Ideas: The cathedral at which demons perform a black mass. E4M6 Against Thee Wickedly - "NM100S Pistol Start or Perish" by Peter and Cammy E4M7 And Hell Followed - "Path of the Pale Horse" (WIP) by Lippeth Note: Previously claimed by McJerb. Ideas: Long, dark, and atmospheric. E4M8 Unto the Cruel - "The Eternal Emptiness" by Myrgharok (TheUltimateDoomer666) E4M9 Fear - "Darkness Continues" by Bloo Ideas: Hiding the Secrets felt a little upbeat for this map but I don't think pure ambience would work either. Maybe somewhere in between. D_BUNNY (End of Episode 3) - "Arrival of the Demons" by northivanastan Ideas: Yet another exception to the "over 90 seconds" rule. Try to make something that matches up with the ending animation like the original did. D_INTER (Intermission) - "Beating the Demons" by Myrgharok (TheUltimateDoomer666) Ideas: Congratulations, you beat this level, but it's not over yet! Make sure the first few seconds of this track are good, since that's about how much of the track that most players will hear. D_INTRO (Title) - "Doomguy and His Angry Band" by northivanastan, medley of "At Doom's Gate," "Hiding the Secrets," "Untitled (Hell Keep)," "I Sawed the Demons," and "Victory" Ideas: This is an exception to the "over 90 seconds" rule, but try to follow it anyway. I like how Freedoom's title tracks are a full song and not just a brief jingle. Anyway, try to set the tone for the rest of the WAD. Establish the melody early for those using demo-compatible ports. D_INTROA (OPL Title) - "A Guitarist Shreds in the Forest and No One is There to Hear It" by northivanastan Ideas: Another exception to the 90 second rule. Make this one as short as D_INTRO usually is, and make sure to listen to it in an OPL soundfont or OPL emulator. D_VICTOR (Text screen) - "Ammo Count: 00" by STILES 40/41 done, 1+2/41 work in progress, 0+1/41 claimed with no evidence of progress, 0+2/41 unclaimed If you aren't sure what to claim, try one of the "high priority" slots. You do not need to follow the ideas, they're just little thoughts I had on the tracks to hopefully get you thinking so it's not just "do whatever." And lastly, the rules: Each contributor may claim up to six slots total. However, if a contributor has claimed three slots for which nothing has been submitted, they may not claim additional slots. After claiming a slot you must submit your MIDI (either send me a DM or make a post here) in under two weeks. If you take too long to submit, your slot will become open again. This is flexible; if you cannot finish in two weeks, then send me some evidence that you have made progress, preferably an incomplete MIDI, and I will give you more time. People who have submitted work in progress MIDIs have until the end of the project. All tracks must be in MIDI format. It is also strongly preferred that the files be under 96KB in size. The MIDIs should be at least 90 seconds long (there are some exceptions) Reusing MIDIs created before the start of the project is not allowed. Remixes are allowed, as long as you state what you are remixing, the remix is sufficiently distinguishable from the original, and you aren't remixing the same MIDI that yours will replace (there may be exceptions). I will judge the quality of your MIDIs; if they are not at a reasonable level of quality or fit poorly with the map, your slot may become open again. I don't have good tools for making edits to existing MIDIs (again, help would be appreciated), so I may ask that you make certain small edits. The current plan is for final product will be licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. This will allow me to release the pack as an album on Bandcamp and OpenGameArt under the CC-BY-SA, and allow others to use and remix your MIDIs for their projects (even commercial ones), as long as credit is given and the license is preserved in any modified versions. If you are uncomfortable with this, please say so. With all that said, let's get going! Edited July 21, 2021 by northivanastan 61 Quote Share this post Link to post

continuum.mid Posted March 28, 2021 (edited) I've updated the OP to state that I plan to release this entire pack under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA) license, rather than just encouraging individual musicians to use CC-BY-SA. This will allow commercial use, and use without permission, but it does require credit and share-alike. I'm not sure how most of the artists on Doomworld feel about that, so if you are uncomfortable with your work being released under the CC-BY-SA, please say so! I'm open to changing plans if more than one artist feels that way. Edited March 28, 2021 by northivanastan 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted March 28, 2021 Just a question/suggestion type thing: Are we replacing the duplicates in reverse order? I see that there's a lot of E1 slots open for example - what I had in mind is that every original MIDI would get to be heard once in it's original slot, and that all the duplicates after that would be replaced. If that's not how it's going to be done that's really no big deal, but I do think it makes a little more sense just personally. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lippeth Posted March 28, 2021 I'd love to help out with any technical things (clean-ups/edits, advice where qualified) but for now I'm a bit sapped for new musical ideas after several other projects and wanted some time to recharge. And Doomkid's MIDI project showed me just how difficult it is to imitate BP's style, but that doesn't mean I won't end up claiming something before this is all over, I do love being involved with these kind of projects, and talking about music with people. I may even claim something sooner than later because that's how inspiration works I guess. So stylistically what are your expectations? Should the MIDIs be as close to Prince's style as possible? Or is it more lenient with room for personal flair? And (Sorry if I'm taking this too literally, but I'm just checking) should submitting only be done through DMs or is posting half-finished ideas in the thread for public feedback okay? This looks fun, I'll think about claiming something! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

If that's not how it's going to be done that's really no big deal, but I do think it makes a little more sense just personally. Well there are cases where the "original slot" isn't clear, or where that idea would make less sense. For example, the Hell Keep track appears in E2M9 first, but it's more associated with E3M1. What I decided on was to let people pick whichever of the duplicates they like, and open the TFC tracks once all but one of each duplicated MIDI remained un-claimed. The goal is a full replacement, though, so if you wanted to keep the first use of each track intact that would easily be possible. 2 hours ago, Lippeth said: I'd love to help out with any technical things (clean-ups/edits, advice where qualified) but for now I'm a bit sapped for new musical ideas after several other projects and wanted some time to recharge. You can post tracks here for feedback as well; I'm planning to do that myself for my E3M9 and E4M1 tracks. DMs are just the preferred way to submit. Quick note - the Thy Flesh Consumed tracks aren't open yet, so you can start composing something, but once it does open someone might reserve E4M6 before you can. I would prefer original tunes, though, because I want this to be a new set of tracks, not a "remix album." The rule is that if you can't finish in two weeks, you can ask for more time if you provide some evidence that you have made progress on the MIDI. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted March 29, 2021 (edited) Speaking of which: here's what I have so far of my own MIDIs for this project (E3M9 and the E4M1 track I started before the project). e3m9-and-e4m1.zip E3M9 "Mouth for Secrets" is a remix of the E3M1/E2M9 music, with a melody from Hiding the Secrets (E1M9/E3M9) at the end. Thought a remix would be appropriate for Warrens because the level itself is a remix of Hell Keep. E4M1 "Desolation" is a downtempo track meant to convey a hopeless feeling as your health is slowly whittled down by those opening shotgunners. Feedback would be greatly appreciated before I consider these final! Edited March 29, 2021 by northivanastan 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I feel like more pronounced bass sounds would improve many of these songs. Your melodies sound a little bit "noodly," in that the notes feel somewhat random. Not sure if they're supposed to sound that way or not. I do like the drumbeats though! You make a great use of different drum sounds. Not sure if they're supposed to sound that way or not. I do like the drumbeats though! You make a great use of different drum sounds. Looking forward to your E3M5 MIDI! Thanks dude, I will try my best on E3M5! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I already got a good idea what to do for that level showcase.zip Some of the notes are layered/duplicated. For example, there are notes on channel 2 of "track 3 boss.mid" that overlap in both pitch and duration. This has the effect of causing the volume of the channel to go up and down (duplicated notes increase the volume of the channel), at least in the sequencer I use. continuum.mid Posted April 1, 2021 I've uploaded a ZIP with the first three MIDIs - TheUltimateDoomer666's E1M8 track and my two contributions - as well as WADs so you can listen to them in game. I'll continue to release incomplete versions as new tracks are submitted. Please reply any feedback you have on the existing MIDIs, so that the final product will be as good as it can possibly be! ultimidi-0.0.1.zip 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
