[Released] Ultimate MIDI Pack - A community music replacement for the original Doom

Recommended Posts

Down to just three unclaimed slots, so if some madlad who hasn't participated yet wants to do E1M2, E1M3, and E3M2 all in the space of two weeks, they are welcome to!

I've got another update for you all, including @Bloo's final contribution to this pack - a new MIDI for E1M4 aptly titled "Happy Destruction." I don't normally make note of updates, but a whole section has been added to @TrialD's E1M5 also.

Enjoy and please give feedback: ultimidi-0.0.16.zip

E3M2 is yours, go ahead!

Updated the ZIP again, adding @ZeMystic's new MIDI for E2M5. It's a pretty unique track, and brings us closer to 0.1.0/Milestone 1 (which might actually be tomorrow's update!)

Enjoy: ultimidi-0.0.17.zip

Side note: there seem to have been more downloads than normal of the beta ZIPs for the last few versions. I think I can attribute that to more people becoming aware of Lee Jackson's involvement.dls.png.d933ec2a4eb873c16c953fb840a0ede8.png

You flatter me, kind sir. ;)

Fuck it. An idea for an E1M2 track began brewing, I might as well contribute. I need to compose more MIDIs anyway.

It's yours, my friend! Send me a MIDI file ideally within two weeks.

Just one slot left! Anyone want E1M3?

I hope to be able to fill that last slot once I can finish my TNT MIDI pack slot.

If you can get some progress done in the next two weeks I'd just claim it now (you can also ask for extra time if needed). If someone else takes it, also, another slot might be freed up in the future if its claimant is inactive.

Oo, so like a race! Challenge accepted.

Thanks for putting mine in! It was nice to put together an actual MIDI, I'm sure mine will fit just fine with E2M4, one of the more desolate and atmospheric maps of Ultimate Doom.

I would appreciate being credited as Keagan Dunn - my username might be a bit offputting :P

Already got you - and it's time for an update!

Sadly Milestone 1 will have to wait til tomorrow, but this is a big update nonetheless. @Bloo has substantially improved E2M3 and plans to improve it further, and there are three new MIDIs: the above Keagan Dunn's E2M4, @STILES's D_VICTOR, and @Sego's E4M2! All great tracks.

Enjoy and do give feedback: ultimidi-0.0.18.zip

Screenshot_20210513_225240.png.59be596ba11e60260277e2b8a049cc67.pngWOW that's a lot of downloads. And this time, I have no idea why! Maybe it's my enthusiasm. Hope I can replicate it today.

Today's release only includes one new MIDI - @Cammy's E3M7, which is excellent as usual - but that one MIDI means we've finally completed the first major milestone of this project! All but one instance of each track should now be replaced. In accordance with this milestone I've added a third WAD to the ZIP, uldupmid.wad, which includes only the duplicate MIDIs. If a duplicate-replacing pack is all that you wanted then you could start your Ultimate Doom replay now, but you probably want to wait until E3M4, E4M6, and E4M7 are done.

Enjoy, and please give feedback: ultimidi-0.1.0.zip

Got another update for you all, though a smaller one - adding @MFG38's new track for E1M2, and more substantial changes from @Bloo to E2M3. Just one more track and E1 will be complete.

Enjoy: ultimidi-0.1.1.zip

P.S.: I know this was a major milestone release but seriously, where the TNT Map28 is this attention coming from?

Hello @northivanastan . I'm a bit confused. Is E1M3 claimed? Also has any other slots opened back up? Sorry I only found out about this project recently but I'd be interested.

E1M3 is open; however, a couple of people have stated plans to claim it later on, so be aware that I might use their submissions instead of yours. I'll make another post if more slots open up.

My first post on Doomworld :)

I was drawn to this as a result of Lee Jackson's involvement ("New Music? For What? DOOM???" on his website, specifically) and I would love to make some kind of contribution...

I would be more than happy to have a crack at E1M3 or any that are still available?

PS As you guys don't yet know me, here is a link to something I did recently with my AWE32/OPL3 and AdlibTrackerII:

Welcome to Doomworld! Glad to see that Lee Jackson is still bringing attention to this project; I was expecting the publicity his blog brought to fade pretty quickly, but it hasn't and it's even brought some new people over to the site. Lee Jackson's stuff is great, but so is that of all the other composers; I'd suggest listening to all tracks submitted thus far.

That OPL track is pretty nice, melodies-wise. Though the sound design really does make the limitations of OPL apparent; it seems designed for (a) modern synthesizer(s) in some ways.

E1M3 is open officially but note that STILES is already working on something for it, and didn't claim it because in addition to him, three others already expressed interest in the track; it's been the last open slot for a while. Thus if you also started working on it, I'd likely have to choose, between your track and any others that are submitted, which to use for E1M3 and which to use as a bonus track. Basically, I'm asking for confirmation - given that, do you still want to claim E1M3?

If not, watch this space as some slots may have to be reopened (though I hope not).

Also, this isn't the only project in search of MIDIs on this site. These projects may have a distinct lack of Lee Jackson but they are still worth participating in for sure:

Spoiler

In unrelated news, @Bloo just published an album that contains covers of several of her MIDIs, including three of the ones she made for this pack. If you enjoyed Bloo's MIDIs, or you just enjoy rock music in general, take a look. I also convinced her to release the album under CC-BY-SA (well, mixed CC-BY/BY-SA) just like this MIDI pack, so you're free to use her music in your projects with credit, and remix them if you also use CC-BY-SA.

Glad you liked the melodies! The OPL is quite limited in certain ways but is also a surprisingly powerful little synth when using the extra waveforms and 4OP mode.

I'm happy to claim E1M3 still - it will be interesting to see what everyone produces for that in the end \m/

Enjoying Bloo's album on bandcamp, was impressed by his E1M1 track so thought I'd give it a listen - really good stuff!

Alright then, it is yours! The number of unclaimed slots has at last been reduced to zero. I suggest logging into Doomworld regularly, and as per the rules I set, send me a MIDI file ideally within two weeks.

@Gustavo6046 @STILES if you've started on a track, still feel free to finish it!

Sure! If it is not totally done by then, I will send you what I have so far :)

Also, that Ofisil project seems pretty cool and looks like there's still quite a few empty slots?

Yeah - go ahead and check out the levels that are posted there, quite a few still need music. Though I think it's mostly unfinished levels that don't have music, which makes sense.

Ah ok, fair enough - that makes sense. I'm currently in the process of moving house so my setup is in shambles but after I've had a crack at E1M3 for this project, I'll see if there's anything I can add to Ofisil's project too. MIDIs are great because I don't need to worry about synth modules or special setups - could even get away with Microsoft GS Wavetable if it's not a performance!

Just out of curiosity, is there a SoundFont or module that you use for GM sounds? I've always found Chorium and FluidR3 to be pretty solid.
