I like a lot of new wave of reviewers of the game that got hooked by Eternal, and the commuinity of Doom in Twitter is kinda great with they memes and critics (only exception would be TAG 2)

For me would be also be beating the game in Ultra Violence in the life mode, that's a nice battle for the game.

i guess hate is a strong word and i should have picked a different one but i meant critcism

seens like a big number of the fanbase on doom world dislike eternal be it for the gameplay or for the story so i made this tread so people could talk about what they liked

I would say it's more of a general Doom thing. All the games cater to particular preferences and so it's easy for one aspect to click in perfectly while another falls apart.

Now what I love about Eternal is the fair and balanced combat. In the main campaign, I rarely felt like I was being cheated by the game. My mistakes were caused by my decisions, not by the game. I also love fighting the Whiplash, it's the perfect enemy for me.

A lot of criticism and high emotion is generally a positive thing, anyways. It means people really like the game, and feel that it's worth their time to nitpick and explain the aspects that bother them. If most people really didn't like Doom Eternal, they'd spend their time playing and discussing something else, and it would be ignored and forgotten about.

Anyways, to the subject: I absolutely love the meathook on the SSG. That has to be one of the single most satisfying weapons/mechanics I've experienced in an FPS in many, many years.

off topic but I have to agree, if I were to pick one single thing I like the most in eternal it would definitely be meathook, can't live without it.

its definitively a great addition to the gameplay not only can it be used as a weapon but it can also be used for plataforming and boosting to skip some segments

The way how it took the new formula for Doom 2016 and ran with it, improving things it lacked. In 2016, there was no way to replenish armour (except for pickups) so they added the flame belch. The 2016 SSG was powerful but had no alternate fire mode, so they added a meathook that could be flaming. Runes were a chore in 2016 so they simplified it. The levels of 2016 were enclosed so they opened them up. Platforming felt stale so they added dash and monkey bars.

And here I was, wondering if maybe it would be best if id never made a sequel to 2016 because surely nothing could ever live up to it. Boy was I wrong!

Well, i love the Main Game, it is just awsome and my personal Game of the Year.

The Levels are great, have some neat Design (also the hellish ones) and Gameplay is much fun.

I like the Plattforming that adds to the adventuring Part and remembers me of Shooters from the 90s and early 2000s, also to search how to get to a secret, as it was in the classics when they teased you.

I also like some of the Enemies in the DLCs, the Spectre Snakies, the Spirit... but overall there are to many annoying Things.

Not the Difficulty, but Battles are exhausting, Level Design needs more polish and on the Top Enemies that slow you down.

The DLCs are getting so much Hate because the Main Game was so extremly good.

I enjoyed TAG2. It wasn't as ballbustingly-hard as TAG1, mainly because I played it on a lower difficulty than I usually do, but I think that judgement would stand if I were to replay it at my usual level.

I thought the scene at the start of Immora with all the Night Sentinels teleporting in was cool. I've never seen any Marvel movies, so I never had that to colour my judgement. Hell, the entire opening of that level is amazingly done, it certainly did a good enough job getting me to play along, I wanted to press forward and bring the fight to the Dark Lord ASAP.

The Escalation Nests are a cool idea! They made me want to do the second fight. I think it's a sign of excellent design when a game presents completely optional challenges that make you want to do them anyway.

TAG2 is also the first entry in which I was able to utterly bitchslap the Marauder, which is a memory I will cherish.

Hey, just because TAG 2 got my goose something awful, doesn't mean I hate Eternal :D !

Been saying from the start that Eternal's gameplay is stellar. And really; while I have opinions on how "Doom" the whole Night Sentinel/ Fantasy stuff is, taken on its own? It's all really cool and fun stuff. Literally the only reason I've been complaining about it at all is that I miss Doom being about space marines fighting back against Hell. I don't even mind Doomguy becoming a demi-god, long as that context is kept...

A list of favorite things in general though;

1) Love most of the monster designs, and I was sooo happy when they made the Tyrant actually look like a Cyberdemon.

2) The guns are all great.

3) The environments are fucking gorgeous across the board.

4) THE MUSIC. Hell with the whole "Mick vs Levy/ Hulshult" comparisons, the entirety of Eternal + Ancient Gods 1 and 2 ROCKS.

EDIT: I am also all for the praetor suit having onboard weapon systems and functions like the dash. More of this please... I'm sick of games in which your SPACE MARINE POWER ARMOR does jack shit.

I love the SSG meathook, double dash, grenade, ice bomb, flame belch. And of course the general gameplay. Having grenades regen over a short period of time are great. I actually use them frequently. (unlike in 2016) It's overwhelming at first but after a while, it becomes second nature to use all of them. Having jump pads and monkey bars add great traversal. I really love this game but at the same time think its fine to stay critical of it. It's a super fun game but not perfect. (no game can be)

Its real time chess-battle style and how challenging is to master its dynamic. Many tools and weapons to learn how to use, many enemies to learn how they act, and everything in a pace where you have no time to think. Love it.

Despite major (heh) amounts of salt when I started the game, I really enjoyed DE's game loops once I got the hang of it. The environments are also amazing, they became huge inspiration for mapping later (I think I did a mini version of a bridge with lava falls within it, I forget where it was in DE but I definitely saw it and put it into Technicolor Antichrist Box).

Doom Eternal evolved into a fast skilled based FPS which has taken many by surprise. Unfortunately it means many old school and new fans alike feel like they're missing out and not their preference. I understand that, but kudos for id spotting an opportunity to focus on their strength and not overly concerned about mass market appeal, not pulling punches back.

Its mechanics and gameplay loop is to be commended. You can sense the passion behind the project. They keep trying to pull players back in to replay the game but without the modern loot box, microtransaction BS. It's sad but that alone deserves some praise these days.

I look forward to their future titles and would love to see a Hexen like game with similar mechanics (glory kills, acquire goodies from killing, increasing character skills with combat and challenges, enemy weaknesses from specific weapons / attacks etc)

After being somewhat disappointed in the DLC I've gone back to replay the base game on NM (mostly to desrust) and I've been really enjoying it. The sense of progression as you build up your arsenal is so engaging (I'm a massive ARPG nerd). I fucking love that shit. Pondering whether to get barrel explosion immunity or save up for frost bomb damage boost is the kind of thing I love.
I'm half way through Arc Complex and it's been a blast so far. Got my ass kicked by a few fights but even struggling is fun. Doom Hunter base might be my favourite DE level now. The presentation and build up to the boss is pretty close to perfect, slamming sound track and it's an over all fun level. Even the platforming isn't so bad ;p

Meathook, glory kills, ice bomb, triple rocket blast, beast of a chain gun, weapon mods, enemy weak points, double dash, in air control, verticality of combat

These are the things I like about New Doom (not all apply to 2016 obviously)

I started replaying DE earlier and holy hell it is a fun ride. Now that I know what works against what demon, the combat isn't as exhausting as it was the first time around.

I just finished another Nightmare playthrough of TAG1, and did it while forcing myself not to use Lock-On Rockets or the BFG. I'm really stepping up in the game now, and even though I died probably 20 times or so (at least a dozen of those on the Holt Slayer Gate), I didn't really get that frustrated throughout the playthrough. I've been incorporating a lot of advice from Youtube videos on weapon quickswap combos, using the faltering system in the most advantageous way possible, and using weapon mods that I've often overlooked in the past. It's interesting just how much this game opens up for you once you start using some different tools and tricks from what you're used to. I found myself in the fun zone through the majority of the playthrough. Probably gonna do it again tonight.

Ok, I actually love Doom Eternal. Apart from the story which is "Retcon galore!", the design of the enemies is spot on (I wish they allowed an option to use their skins in Doom2016) and I sort of like the level progression, even though I think it would have been cooler to start on phobos and have to work your way to Earth.

I also like the weapons models, especially the normal shotgun when used in classic weapon pose. A shame you get to use it for like 5 minutes before swapping it out with either weapon mod.

Like really, the only change I would want to the game would be a small chance of enemies dropping ammo when killed. Not too much, just one pickup worth.

Doom Eternal's levels look gorgeous and some new toys are very cool, e.g. meathook.

Ackshually, there was a rune that would let player get armor on glory kills. Also, siphon grenade would leech armor when player's at maximum health.

That rune was good, but most cool was "crazy minigunner" rune (rich get richer). Especially with 2016 much aesthetically better minigun.

Eternal is such revolutionary FPS, like old Doom was in 93. Now, every other FPS gameplay is desperately boring :(

It was a pretty cool game probably the best game I played last year :-D

Also and a big serious, genuinely not being sarcastic thumbs up that I could play it the moment it launched and experienced virtually zero bugs!

Might sound like a duh moment but ID genuinely deserve a massive pat on the back for releasing a game in a finished state in this day and age :-D

My favorite song/theme is the Gladiator one.

I also don't mind the platforming and if they make another expanson, i hope they get more creative with level puzzles/platforming/exploration etc even if it seems like they're taking ideas from mods or games.

Because i believe there's still more to include in this current gameplay formula.

Even though the Archvile is a different character, he does seem more interesting than the Summoner in 2016.

His summoning has an actual form of visual feedback and you can even stop it.
