Old-Doomguy Posted March 31, 2021 Hey all My brother is reluctant to play Doom. Probably because he has rtx 3080 etc... But I was thinking about making a map and that way he would at least take a look at it. I never did this before so I downloaded UDB and fooled around a bit. Managed to make a few rooms with bloody stairs and some enemies. My bane was making a functional door so I looked on YouTube and learned that important skill, I just couldn't figure it out myself. Anyway I'm gonna play around with this and maybe I'll get him to enjoy it. How did you persuade anyone into returning to Doom? 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Arrowhead Posted April 1, 2021 (edited) My brother's really into Quake 3 Deathmatch. I told him I probably wouldn't be able to make a Quake 3 map, (actual 3D mapping is far more intensive than Doom, I've heard) but that I could make him some Doom DM maps. It took a bit of convincing, but now we more or less try to play a DM game every second day or so. Also, don't feel bad about the whole 'door' thing, that was a crux for me when I started out, too. There's actually a really easy shortcut to make a door in DoomBuilder 2/ DoomBuilder X - I think its just 'shift+D'. You just select the sector you want to be a door, and press that, and bam! you've got a functional door! I imagine it might work in UDB, too. Try it out! Anyway, that's how I got him to return to Doom. :) Edited April 2, 2021 by Arrowhead12 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kute Posted April 2, 2021 In my experience, it's best to just let people play what they want to play. People are too caught up in getting people to enjoy "their" media. Your brother didn't buy a 2 grand videocard to play Doom. One of the reasons I enjoy Doom is that I don't have to take one of my GPU's off of mining to do it. It's an insane way to look at things, but here we are in 2021. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Final Verdict Posted April 2, 2021 I did the same thing last year. I made a crappy map with box rooms connected by hallways. I slapped in some zombiemen to disarm him and in the last room I added a custom enemy. A revenant who had a ridiculous amount of life, increased speed, scale/size, insane health and no ranged attack. It just ran after him very quickly while making a lot of noise. It's melee attack was instant death. I was trolling him of course but it was fun to see him complain about how easy and shitty the map was only to die multiple times trying to kill that thing, to be fair he was drunk. I named the revenant 'Final Verdict'. It's where my forum name came from. That got him back into Doom for a few weeks. Point being that you could create a short map that is entertaining. Mine was designed to torment my brother with zero thought put into layout, but your brother might not have the same silly sense of humour. Find out what he likes and try to implement that into your map. Then he might come back for a more serious look or he might see the potential and get curious himself. You could also skip that and just let him play a map made by someone like Skillsaw or Bridgeburner. If Skillsaw's gameplay doesn't entice him then Bridgeburner's attention to beauty and detail just might. There's a lot of great mappers out there, I'm sure there is something out there that will lure your sibling into Doom. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I'd say my computer is overkill for about 60-70% of the games I have, but for the newest games that really push it, it was definitely worth it. Infinite backwards compatibility may be one of the best reasons to buy PC over console. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Yeah I remember doors were a bit tricky when I first was learning how to use Doom Builder. You know I initially had the same idea--and when I EVENTUALLY finish my maps I plan on showing them to my brothers--but I guess I'm a bit of a perfectionist. The old DNF saying "When it's done." I also don't map that often, and if I do, I usually land up doing so because I feel like playing my map, then after I beat it I think, "Oh well, I could fix that, and--ooh I could put that there, and... Next thing you know it's 6 AM but that room/combat scenario I just made feels really clever or satisfying. It's quite gratifying getting to design the map that's just the way you want it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Old-Doomguy Posted April 12, 2021 (edited) Well it's ongoing. I've not documented the progress much but I did take a snapshot with the phone just to show my bro :D The pillars have a door there now (which isn't on the images) and I'm gonna try and refine the texture alignments and brightness levels. I'm crap at it but I'm having fun doing it. https://imgur.com/a/f1H61Fz Edited April 12, 2021 by Old-Doomguy 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
