DoomWiki Months in Review (Issue #29)

Xymph

Recommended Posts

After that frantic January, it was perhaps inevitable that February would be slower -- and certainly evitably 2-3 days shorter than other months. :) So I saved up the 27 new articles to combine them with last month's.

Certainly noteworthy in February, however, was the completion of walkthroughs for all of Strife's maps by Gauss, filling a long-standing gap in the wiki's core coverage. Gauss since applied the same thorough treatment to mods Masters of Chaos and Threshold of Pain.

The main event in March was of the course the release of Doom Eternal's second DLC, but otherwise it wasn't a very busy month either. Here is the full list of new articles:

I can't believe there is an article for Literal Spiral. I thought that map got lost when that thread was nuked.

Thanks for the update. Always some interesting stuff.

One thing I don't understand, what does it mean "the demonic trooper is an ambient monster"? Why ambient?

It's kinda explained later that it's called like this because you can glory kill or chainsaw it, but I still don't get that term. Who introduced it? Are most of the monsters in Doom 2016 "ambient monsters"?

The "ambient monster" category includes buff totems, tentacles, cueballs, spirits, turrets, and demonic troopers. I really can't see a common thread between them all. Like buff totems, tentacles, and turrets? Okay, stationary thingies. Buff totems and spirits? Okay, thingies that boost other monsters instead of fighting you directly. Cueball and demonic troopers? Okay, fodder you can't feed upon. All those at once? Sorry, I don't see a common thread here.

I think it'd be better classified as miscellaneous monsters. But AFAIK the categories are taken directly from the game, it's not an arbitrary invention of the wiki. I don't have the modern games, though; they wouldn't run on my old lapotatop. (Only one gig of VRAM and no support for Vulkan.)

This cannot be real.

Maybe, maybe not, but the one update looked plausible to Quasar and me, so I accepted it.
